How long does the withdrawal period last?
Depends. Depends if mother was using illicit drugs off the streets, what she was using, how much and how long. Baby’s can still withdrawal like this even if the mother is doing everything she can and taking the maintenance medication like suboxone. Every baby should be treated like a case by case basis because every situation is different. Some mothers can take suboxone all throughout their pregnancy and the baby be just like this in the hospital withdrawing for 8 weeks or longer. Very rare, but it happens. The main reason babies are in the hospital withdrawing a long time is because the mother was using illicit drugs and not seeking help. Most babies who are on the treatment medication and the mother is on a stable dose throughout their pregnancy their baby will go home the normal 2-5 day. A lot of hospitals have a mandatory 5 day observation period to observe and score baby’s symptoms.

There’s so much suffering going on with this poor baby…..sorry but I have no sympathy for the parents of babies like this….but then they’re not really parents. The pain and agony this baby is experiencing is beyond awful…and they cannot do anything to help themselves.
When a mother is on opiates then cannot abruptly stop, otherwise they can have a miscarriage. So I would assume you support abortion? Otherwise what else would you suggest the mother do? A lot of them go to a doctor and get on a treatment medication that helps them stay stable, they aren’t getting high but they aren’t going through withdrawal which causes fetal distress for the baby in which could cause miscarriage or a stillbirth. And for those women who get on the treatment medication, a lot of them have babies that don’t withdrawal. Some do, but the withdrawals symptoms are not anywhere near as bad as the hardcore drugs they were doing and atleast they did the right thing by going to a doctor and seeking help and doing it the right way. Now as far as mothers who don’t seek help and just continue to get high and buy drugs off the streets, I don’t have sympathy for. Nowadays there’s so many resources out there for help. And it’s free majority of the time. Baby goes through much harder time withdrawing from street drugs then the treatment medication they prescribe to prevent withdrawal for the mother.

Before making snap judgements, you need to KNOW. Sometimes babies are born this way because the Mother is already attempting sobriety, and so would be taking Suboxone or Methadone but when she gets pregnant, her Drs will advise her to CONTINUE taking the meds, as sudden discontinuation can actually be lethal to the growing fetus. In cases like such, the baby will be born dependent on the drug, but will be weaned slowly off it for a period of days, weeks, or months.
That is true but the withdrawals are reduced when mother does suboxone/subutex, if their honest with their doctor and they take a low, stable dose. The key is stability. I took the lowest dose possible of subutex my whole pregnancy, .5mg and she thankfully had no withdraws symptoms. We went home day 4, I had a c-section. But I see a lot of moms that go up and down on their meds, try and wean themselves off, then baby comes out like this. If your uncomfortable anytime throughout your pregnancy playing around with your medication, so will the baby. Baby feels everything your feeling.
