I love the viola. What a beautiful instrument
Love the little smile on his face
Liquid gold- this sounds DELICIOUS
So well played
I think is so difficult this concerto. More than Mozart violins concerto
"BAR" IS JUST "BACH" with the german pronunciation!!!! Please don't be a stupid web publisher and correct your video
Beautiful. It's as easy as 1, 3, 2. whoops
I’ve never met a viola player but based on this little clip i can tell the stereotypes are true
@davidnoll9581 what exactly do you mean? What stereotype do you see in this clip from her?
So what are bar hierarchies?
So what are bar hierarchies

I play the violin and i can say, its a pretty hard instrument
I wish the viola got more appreciation! This is beautiful ❤
What king of viola does he play?
What piece is this?
Mozart's Sinfonia concertante
Maybe it's the forced condensation of the material in this format, but this is a lot of word salad. One example of that is the notion that joints "breathe." They do not. Maybe take your concepts and make separate videos where you can expand and fully discuss these aspects in ways that are meaningful. As a former massage therapist, and cellist moving into viola, this is less helpful, although I have had a tai chi practice. It's more useful to learn how the muscles insert into bone, what their "action" is, and also how to clear one's mind of distraction and judgment that creates tension. Mostly for people in 2024, the constant battle of what I call the Praying Mantis position - of most of us being hunched over a computer for a good bit of our time, which foreshortens chest and arm muscles, elongates unnaturally the back...working to reduce those effects is the main thing that will open up string playing. Tai Chi can most certainly help - but this video doesn't demonstrate that.
Wonderful viola sound and fantastic playing, Matt! Great to see such a detailed breakdown of the phrasing coupled with how to achieve it with specific techniques.
Thank you

I was so taken with Matthew's presentation that I subscribed immediately. But you cut the vid short after his analysis of only the opening measures of the viola solo; I'd have. been happy to spend an hour in Matthew's company, at the very least. Exceptional discussion of viola sound and phrasing - let's have more of it!
Plain and Simple...be like bamboo..be rooted but flexible and segmented. Tendon connectivity from toes to finger tips allows proper muscle relaxation while maintaining root and intent. When using the tendon body system, isolated muscle usage is minimized because the whole body is acting as one. This allows muscles to contract slightly to draw tendons and allows muscle relaxation to maximize oxygen supply and minimizes lactic acid buildup and muscle fatigue and failure. The same technique/skiilset that can be utilized by full body movement can be expressed with just the fingers. one part is the same as the whole. This is the bamboo temple jooklum qigung 108 tendon body system.. It has some similarities to tai chi but mostly just the internal chigung work
Im sorry this is very inaccurate explanation
Tetra chord framework… hmm okay

Excelente vídeo! ❤ Perguntinha, essa surdina dele é de metal?
The space between 3 and 4 is much larger than what he implies for violin. A stretch is required on both instruments.
he wouldn't know better, thats why we joke about them!
@thatoneguy8064 no, hes right. I play both, and octaves on viola are a much different breed than violin
@@lethargy0_035 I play both too, and I wasn't denying that they're different. I deny that the presenter knows that they are. Work on your reading comprehension.
@thatoneguy8064 saying "a different breed" was how I was trying to say its much harder. The issue jn the case of hand frame the makes viola harder is that it changes from string to string and when you shift. He definitely knows what he's talking about its his job.
violists suck 🍑
This is such a great violist!!
Interesting... although i dont play the viola
Objectives and recording yourself makes the difference!! Sooo true!!
Great tone
I'm glad there finally is a Tonebase Viola channel! ❤
I just love her!! ❤❤❤
i see kim kashkashian, i click
This viola looks so cool, why is it shaped like that?? Wish I could hear more of it and this guy playing
Those violas are made by Hiroshi Iizuka. The violist in this video is Paul Laraia and he has a lovely recording of the Glazunov Elegy here on youtube.
Realized this is for viola but didn't see that. Great excercise for violin as well!
I wish my violin teacher mentioned this kind of stuff 10 years ago 😢

Nice vid. How many inches is your viola? Great info in how to approach...aspects. cool
I do think arm vibrato is perfectly suited for playing the viola!
