Justin Welby represented the Church of England at IICSA in 2018 as one of two Lead Safeguarding Bishops. To the best of my knowledge I cannot find any reference to John Smyth in the Inquiry. With knowledge of Smyth’s abuse the Archbishop of Canterbury apparently remained silent. I find that extremely disturbing. In Ezekiel 34 God expresses his anger at the negligence of his spiritual shepherds. Sincere Christians must be deeply hurt over the lack of compassion shown toward survivors of CSA. In view of this I struggle with the comment that Justin Welby as done much for safeguarding in the last ten years.
