Blue Box continues into the 2025 winter season and decides to feed us even more "Hina is Best Girl Propaganda" with this gorgeous new ED. Though I am anime only, I am acutely aware of how a romance anime works, so I am so prepared (not) for the MAXIMUM pain for Hina in these coming episodes.
Besides being entirely Hina focused, Contrast by TOMOO is also a very mellow, sentimental song, in stark contrast to the upbeat first ED by Eve. Understanding the lyrics just makes it hurt even more, as it really feels like Hina singing about her frustrations while trying to finally accept what will never be.
I really enjoyed arranging this one; it reminded me a lot of Scent of First Love, as it shares that same bittersweet tone to it. The accompaniment is kept deliberately simple just like the original - warm block chords to support the singing melody on top. I believe that preserving the space and silence between the phrases is integral in this arrangement to portraying that feeling of heartbreak.
Though it *sounds* simple, it actually takes a lot of control (and exploiting my BIG hands) to voice the melody on top of the many middle voices in the chords. Apart from chords, I love sneaking in counter melody lines as well, such as the cello line in the pre-chorus at 1:58. The ending to the choruses also has some three-hand voicing at 1:15 - the moving bass line, melody in the middle voice, and soaring 'sparkle' open fifths in the high end. Once again, I took advantage of some pretty nasty large intervals, so if I ever make sheet music for this I apologise to everyone with small hands xD.
As usual I also took a little bit of freedom with the instrumental solo at 2:50 - it's mostly based on the original guitar solo but with some adaptations to make it more suitable for the piano. Finally, I just could NOT resist adding a cheesy half step up key change for the last big chorus. The final declaration of the chorus melody in Db major, combined with a reharmonization using a descending chromatic bass line 3:56 makes for a bold finish - before I release the pedal and let the final solo line sing out on its own: "Though you're close, you're worlds apart." We end with a restatement of the same warm chords as the intro, before fading into silence.
Stay strong, Hina Chono fans. I will be on board when the ship finally sinks, until the very end o7.

Bro this is incredible, I am learning the piano and I would die to do some of these but unfortunately, I have a 5 octaves Keyboard so I can't learn them, (and even if I had 7 octaves it would be impossible, the way that your both hands were going from chord to chord is like the stuff of nightmares to me)
