Some updates to my Rhino template (maybe only worth watching if you've been following)
Not much production quality here so don't expect a good video. But... this template is actually going to come together soon so I figured now is a good time to share where I'm at.

Any other Rhino 3D users starving for models

Disguised beneath this rant is a good idea: A 3D model co-op specific to Rhino 3D. On one job I'll need a certain style of chair. Another it'll be a door of some kind. Whether I have to browse the various model libraries, or model the thing myself, it wears me down. Anyone else desperately needing access to decent Rhino 3D models?

Just one relatively simple situation, but one that would have gotten the better of me a few years ago. No big deal now. My biggest enemy isn't fillets but rather how fussy I guess over things that nobody will see.

Rhino 8 Plan Views - Draft/Preview Version

Hopefully I can make a better version of this soon. It's not the most organized video and my standards/approach isn't quite finalized yet. My memory is also a little foggy regarding how the Clipping planes work in relation to NamedViews (which I might refer to as SavedViews). It's worth watching if you need an idea where to start yourself. And my final approach will be very similar to this.
Any chance you'd be interested in a small Architectural Competition?

Just sampling the waters, seeing if there's anyone who wants to participate in a small (very small!!) Architectural Competition. More details to follow shortly.

Just some "highlights" (What I think is probably the most interesting stuff) while modeling a Nintendo 64 console. I've used plane surfaces where they are obviously not plane in some places, and took a few other liberties. I tried to focus on the more challenging (for me) parts as far as surfaces and transitions go. Want something shown in more detail? Just ask me in the comments!

AutoLISP Tutorial: Layer Lock Toggle using IF statement
Yours, it's a CALL for Unity. And I Appreciate that. Through Unity we Grow Stronger. I do have stuff to do, but also it's useful for me, you and everyone else to have furniture assets available to be used and "fill the scene". We need to create a repository (for ourselves) the collaborators and we sell to the public our own achievements. Otherwise I'm open to ideas 💡
You are a Rhino user as well right?
@randomCADstuff Yes, and not only that. I have extended experience on Blender, ZBrush, Fusion 360 and many other softwares. We can even split the gains making a PACKAGE 📦 if you'd like to. I'm more interested in having a Future collaborator for the start-up company I'm slowly creating. You seem promising. Dude, contact norgru eu
@randomCADstuff Yes and not only that, I'm also extensively experienced in Fusion 360, Blender, ZBrush and many other softwares. We can even create a package 📦 and split the gain, I'm slowly creating a company and I'm interested in the idea of having a collaborator.
So you wanna collaborate to create a massive open source library of furniture for everyone?
Yes/No/Somewhat. The second video explains in better detail ua-cam.com/video/IxTMrmmWrRQ/v-deo.html This idea might evolve. It might just be me and a few other people sharing models privately. Or it might be me posting my own models on Gumroad for a small price. Or both. So far I don't think the library will be "massive". I'm hoping to have enough stuff where you can model a floor plan and all your plans and interior elevations will look "complete".
@randomCADstuff I wanna join your insane Idea
Thanks, this video was a big help, not easy to find a decent one outlining Layer state
Glad it was helpful! A few people have been having some issues I was worried that AutoCAD changed stuff on us.
If It'll happen in a big body like a gear mechanism it is a real headache)) Rhino is so powerfull CAD but fillets ruins all smooth modeling process.
It can certainly be challenging for sure. Up until last year I struggled but now it seems like I'm just able to find ways to get it to work. And quickly (well... quicker than two years ago that's for sure!). My first year or so? I struggled hard and would sometimes change my geometry to avoid a fillet fail. Dealing with the fails actually made me way better at modeling. Occasionally I still encounter a frustrating situation but it's happening less and less.
@randomCADstuff all CADs have pros and cons))
I can't wait to download it
If/when I finally get this done, or a useable version of it, I'll share it for free. Could be anywhere from a few weeks to a few months. Longer if I end up getting busy. I really want to put some serious hours in though! I'm seeing the finished result in my head just need the time and energy!!
Im gonna have to watch this again to fully understand what you generally do , or wether or not my solution is a good one, im a bit dumb aometimes so its my fault , but before i watch it again , do you need a 3d modelling partner ? Indont get tired i enjoy it , although i use a different software i think i can probably just export it for rhino
Only watch it once haha! I posted a second video related to this one that should appear any second. I think as everything comes together it will make more sense. What software do you use if you don't mind me asking?
@@randomCADstuff why would i mind you asking that hahaha, i use Blender, i enjoy modeling and i enjoy the "boring stuff" like topology , unwrapping, texturing and rigging , im not great with the last one but i can always learn if it needs learning up to any specific level
@@aliamirdivan8333 It's just a formality, a polite way of asking I guess. Blender is pretty amazing! And it's growing fast. For younger people it might be the right choice. Me being a little older I'm not sure I could learn it. I've watched Blender Guru's tutorials (enjoyed the heck out of them). Blender just seems too hard for me to learn. The work I do is also a little closer to what Rhino 3D is well suited for.
@@randomCADstuff no you don't have to learn it at all , i was thinking i make the models you want and convert them to a format that is suitable for rhino , basically i;ll have to learn a bit of rhino so that i can use it as a bridge , what do you think ?
@@aliamirdivan8333 You would only need to save it in a format that would be something we can open in Rhino. There's a few ways to go about doing that. The only concern I have is on your end: Unless you're using Rhino it might not be the most effective use of your time. You'd be using Blender to make models for Rhino users instead of using Blender to make models for basically anyone potentially interested in your 3D models. We can generally get access to models in other formats including Sketchup. But I have to at the very least apply materials and mapping. And I'm stuck with a mesh that I can't really do much to. you'll see in the second video ua-cam.com/video/IxTMrmmWrRQ/v-deo.html that the cabinet door, although super simple, demonstrates this well. I would almost rather hire a Blender user like you to model stuff that's a pain in the ass in Rhino (but Blender excels at).
Thank you so much
It saves me so much time.
You probably have checked these out, but have you looked at enscape and lumion’s library of objects?
Love your attention to detail and going into use case. It shows you actually worked on some problems yourself. Good stuff!
Thank you!! In the video is a younger and more motivated version of myself. My voice even sounds way clearer haha!! You're correct in what you say: Anything I found hard or confusing at first (or stuff I overlooked), I like to post a video in hopes of saving others the time and trouble.
Another note: I won't record videos like this anymore. The shiftyness is actually a little hard on the eyes. I had also over-estimated how long it actually takes to render a video using D5 and was instead just recording D5 itself.
What made you choose Rhino over other software? I’m a Civil Designer with many years of experience using AutoCAD and am now looking to upskill for small scale residential 3D modelling & wondering which software to focus on. Can you suggest any additional learning resources for Rhino 3D beyond your page?
The Level 1 and 2 manuals are quite thorough wiki.mcneel.com/rhino/6/trainingguides/en. One thing to keep in mind is that Rhino was originally an Industrial Design software. In the first manual I think you literally model a rubber duck. But be patient. I want to get something up but I need to finish my template. I hope to get a good tutorial going sometime this year hopefully. The pathway which led me to Rhino is quite complex. In short I wanted to just initially 3D model building structures, like just the structure nothing else, and I could do it way faster than Sketchup. And there's Revit of course but its expensive and even at times incapable of modeling literally just the concrete part of the building. Sketchup has its strengths but I just don't like the interface. If you want something a little less intensive Sketchup is actually a good option (Layouts are slow but still useable... and if you don't use layouts even better). Definitely look at Sketchup because it's a really good option. Search "Sketchup for Architects" or "Sketchup for Structural Engineers". They're actually my inspiration for trying to do what I do in Rhino. Rhino could be considered a weird tool for Architecture and building construction but it does certain things really well. It's popular with landscape architects. It also has a plugin that does structural analysis (plus some free ones too). I'm starting to use it for product designs and renderings and might even help a friend out with that; I never guess I'd ever get into that.
Could you share the cad version ? 2weeks is a good time 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 Nice idea with a keys😉
If you email me I can share a CAD version. Or I can put it on Google Drive. I'll be able to export it later today. I could also export an FBX too if you wanted to see what it looks like in Revit.
There's one last video in the playlist that I had to remove. I'll have to either re-create it (don't have time tonight) or share the details through email. That video's subject will be a little extra background into why I started the competition, and details of the potential prize (there will most likely be a small prize it's just not finalized yet).
Sorry about the scratchy voice. Not sure if it's me or my mic (probably me I have a good mic). If you miss something don't hesitate to ask.
It’s cool idea ill probably need to stick to 2d AutoCAD or hand sketch but will try autcad Let us know about metric size of front of the house and land etc not sure what kind of files would you have I might have access for my very old 3d ArchiCAD 10
I have another video on the way that will explain further.... I can actually export AutoCAD linework into DWG/DXF - So I'd be able to get you a clean version of the front of the house. I can probably also export to a format that will work with Revit but I don't want this to morph into something that will end up eating up a bunch of your time. I will likely be able to model/render your design in D5 render, you'd literally just have to pick out the colors/materials (I'd match as closely as possible). I'm keeping this small so even spending an hour per entry won't be out of reach.
@ that’s what I’m thinking about too it will be something relatively quick but would be great to see many different ideas from people
The Audio is a bit pooched as well. Clip Champ (the free video editor that comes with Windows 11) did an update... and it's pooched. Seems to be mangling my videos and also my audio a bit (which of course doesn't start off perfect either haha). Bear with me while I grind out the final details :-)
Remember this creates a longer piece. Didn't matter in my case. Have your own way? Make a video!!
hey man, nice video... if I get this right, dimensioning in Rhino must be done in the model space, right? so there is no way one can create dimensions and/or annotations in viewport/layout mode? I never used Rhino, but I'm considering it just for kicks. Coming from Vectorworks, there is a ton of things you can do really fast in there as far as annotation goes... From what I could grasp, Rhino is really limited in that regard, which is a real bummer -- hope I'm wrong here. How does Rhino manages title blocks, revision clouds, issue/revision blocks? Does it offer any templates or workflows on that regard or we'd have manually edit those case by case?
You can 100% create annotations in Layout Space. That's actually what I'm doing. The reference lines at the wall centers need to be drawn in model space; basically, the dimensions have to snap to something in model space to show the correct measurements. I'm going to try and make a more concise video in the future on this (it really doesn't need to be 20 minutes long) - there's not much to it once you get your process down. I'm about 80% of my AutoCAD speed for annotating, but with the advantage of having the 3D model close-by of course. You're right: There are some limitations but I feel that when I sort my template out, those limitations will become very marginal. The outright speed won't be as fast as Vectorworks or Revit but it will come close. And the main advantage will be when you encounter something that you can't model in those programs. I have lots of experience with Revit and it was actually the first program I ever did a deep dive into (I had used AutoCAD before but never to such an extent). I found that Revit could achieve specific results ultra fast, say in 4 out of 5 tasks. But then task 5 out of 5 would be horrendously slow, and the AutoCAD tortoise would catch up (and sometimes pass) the the Revit Hare. My idea is to come up with a system that is perhaps slightly slower, but easy to learn and memorize, and available to a huge number of people (no subscription fees!!). Rhino's title blocks are very similar to AutoCAD. I develop tools in AutoCAD that make up the gap versus the BIM programs and I hope to do the same in Rhino. In the last 5 years I've never seen a Revit title block with correct issue/revision dates, so even a basic/manual method beats that (keeping in mind that I'm targeting small projects). Said and done, the template along with workflows will be a very competitive (and cheaper) option to BIM programs for smaller projects.
@@randomCADstuff thanks for the thorough response, I really appreciate it. well, if you're a seasoned Revit user and managed to create a functional workflow that suits your needs in Rhino, that speaks volumes. I'm not an architect, but I do a lot engineering work creating layouts for warehouses/plants and constantly need to deal w/ large scale IFC/RVT models (think of 100s of thousands of entities per project)... if Rhino can process that kind of thing, I'm sold. I tried lots of different CAD packages and so far AutoCAD and Vectorworks are the ones which I could confidently say are really dependable--even though I don't wanna touch ACAD with a ten foot pole. I'll dig further into Rhino and check if I can trial it again for good. Thanks again for the insights, you just got a new subscriber here.
@@rodrigochamusca7723 Anytime! This 'project' is my entire life outside of work right now (not quite but close haha) so I'm super excited to talk about it. Keep in mind that so far I've only 'proven' it viable (once complete - the template that is) for smaller projects. For example: A relatively simple building permit set for a detached single-family home, maybe a small condo complex. I've also successfully create small steelwork jobs even without a fully-developed template. In those cases the people who specialize in steelwork shop drawings were either charging too much or not paying their detailers enough making them less competitive. Obviously something like advanced steel (or Tekla if you have the use case to pay that much) is better. The project you're describing might be uncharted territory. I want to say it would work in that you just import all the equipment as meshes and model everything around that. Even just importing a single STEP file of a rooftop unit was... well I got what I wanted from it but I was in constant fear of my Rhino crashing (this was Rhino 7 on an older laptop). I don't want to lead you down a dead end I just want to state that I'm not sure if your plan would (or wouldn't) work. It's hard to say without trying obviously.
Juda yaxshi
Just a tip.. Create a shortcut for “zoom to selected object.” It will save you a lot of time and make your workflow much more efficient :)
Thank you so much for the series. Great videos!
Thanks so much for your feedback and congrats on making it to Lesson 8. My math says you're only 5% of people haha! I'd love to make another series someday - Especially now that we can use AutoLISP with AutoCAD LT. My other tutorials didn't turn out as good as this one. I have better tools and a bit more experience. But I would need time and ideas I guess.
Could you please provide us with some more details?
They're coming I just need to finish the model and a few other things. Maybe by the end of the week but I'm hoping for sooner.
@ that’s ok thanks very much for your response 😉
great video, I dont know if this could help but on the template creation I am right now working with some layers thought for even possibly exporting to Revit, but let me know where I could send it
When I said that I wasn't quite sure what I would get someone else to do. I guess I'm just looking for ideas and critique. Or to see if anyone else is actually building a template in Rhino. Or even if people have a use-case for it. I'm also trying to figure out how to get some sort of model library together. I'm getting back into rendering but finding that I don't have the assets I need to populate my scenes. I started creating things (also getting better at things Rhino was actually designed for) but it feels dumb to model things that probably 100 other people created better versions of.
@@randomCADstuffI actually felt a lot like you!! That i was naive just to think that a only Rhino workflow could be done, but got super happy when I ran intoo your profile. Again would be happy to share what I can,
@@Gioelepe Thank-you!! As I further the template I'm going to post more videos like this. And eventually I'll make the template available but for now it's basically just layers.
Hi, Where can I download or purchase the LISP?
Here's the link: keithscadservices.gumroad.com/l/ngbmd Sorry for taking 2 days to get back!!
Hi If you would be interested to dive more into specific topics in revit for clading or and glazed doors windows and curtain walling i could speak abaut it with you behind the scenes. I worked for 10 years as facade designer now in cladding remediation business Im not sure about number of views after all but im 100% sure there is a void you could fill Thanks for your work on and All the best for new year!
I don't have a Revit license and don't see myself getting one anytime soon. With the cost and the actual amount of money I haul in freelancing it doesn't make sense... at least not right now. That kind of surprises me. A company would pay me around $50,000 - $60,000 USD to sit in their office all day and putter around with Revit at a slow pace. But finding freelance work is actually quite challenging. Glazing, cladding and curtain wall design is cool stuff. I'm definitely interested in it and even bought a couple books on the subject, but they weren't that great. Rhino is somewhat popular with Facade design thanks to the parametric aspect (Grasshopper). Many firms that do the wild custom facades list Rhino/Grasshopper in their desired skills. There's even a way to use "Rhino in Revit". It's capable but also turns into a time pit.
It's very impressive that you're doing what REVIT was intended to do, in Rhino. Your stuff looks great and very high quality. As a structural engineer, I can't wait to learn Rhino from you.
Believe it or not back in the day I was a structural drafter. That's how I got into all of this design stuff in the first place. I've always wondered whether or not Rhino would be a good tool for structural engineers. There is Karamba and Kiwi 3D. I've been able to draft small steelwork projects but I think for larger stuff we'd need a big (and expensive) BIM program to stay competitive.
@@randomCADstuff At least at my firm, I've seen Rhino + grasshopper utilized to create parametric solutions for complex geometries. I also especially love Rhino from it's ability to create meshes for 3D FEM models. At the moment I currently have to rely on a coworker of mine to work in Rhino for me, since I am unfamiliar with the software but I hope to learn it for myself one day.
@@bsamexican Back when I worked with Concrete Towers the 2-way slabs were eating up so much time and resources. I had an idea to use Rhino + Karama (or Kiwi 3D) to do the FEM on the slabs and then figure out a way to automatically populate the rebar with proper bar cut-offs... it would save so much time!! I'm far removed from those projects now (well in that capacity at least). I definitely saw the potential. I remember seeing the price tag on some of the higher-end FEM software it can be over $20,000 per year!! Karamba is still under $1,500 :-O . I wouldn't touch the seismic stuff of course. The slabs are key elements obviously but for the most part the loading calculations are less involved than the building's lateral systems... less involved but still time consuming.
Excellent
Undo after use these commands would change the system variable 😅😅😢 mostly I had that. I didn't find any solution instead I use error manager code to trap that.

hi, I loved the video, but I just have a question I have a problem with the part of having different layerstates on the same layout, I have the "apply properties as viewpoint overrides" on, but it changes each time i give a different state on the viewpoint
awesome and more cad stuff please
what is that terrific Font in your Plans, plz?! I've been looking all over 🙂tanx!!
I can't remember where I downloaded this specific font but I do remember it was free and it was called "Graphite MM". Perhaps you can search for that? It's very similar to Adobe's Graphite font. I like the hand-written style but it's hard to find ones that are readable.
thank you for your tutorial I hope upload lisp tutorial more and more because I love it
Thanks for your feedback! I don't program as much in LISP because I grew very accustomed to the built-in LISP editor. Even in 2024 there's few programs that have such a feature. The editor (VLIDE) only comes with AutoCAD's full version which is quite expensive. I wish one of the other CAD programs would create their own built-in editor, or Autodesk include it with AutoCAD LT.
MY DRAG is not working
Are you referring to the 3:00 mark? Are you using AutoCAD or something else? I've used the drag in ACAD '25 it appears to be working.
@@randomCADstuff Dragging does not work after windows 10. Do you know a method for windows 11? Can you help ?
@@kubraburak8111 There could be another way like via a right-click menu - I don't even have an AutoCAD license at the moment unfortunately. In reference to my comment above one month ago: I was able to drag it successfully while running Windows 11 (ACAD '25). I don't doubt your issue exists as Windows 11 is pretty wacky and inconsistent. For me, maximizing and minimizing windows often goes haywire among other things. It's been the most 'broken' Windows version I've ever used.
where might one download the cool Font used in your Planwork, please? reminds me of my long-ago hand-drawn one, kinda 🙂aaaahhh...the good-old days of pencil-on-vellum!! seriously.
please...where can one download the Font used in Planwork? thanks!!
Only recently did I realize that a lot of the fonts I'm using are included with the programs I had installed. The "Stylus BT" font in particular, I can't figure out what program that came with (it has also since disappeared from my computer). Windows doesn't actually include a lot of fonts unfortunately.

Great content, lousy presentation....sorry ]
My intent isn't to be rude but your post does reflect a common style of post by resellers - no objective arguments but rather simply stating their product is "better". If you instead were able to post something more objective it would be very helpful for people trying to pick out an AutoCAD alternative. Better yet if you are not a reseller make a video showing a quick tour of ActCAD (especially in English if possible because I cannot find that). I'm always on the lookout for new CAD programs so I had a look. It is cheap and looks to include lots of features but the big flag I noticed were obvious fake reviews. For example people are writing things that aren't really applicable to your basic everyday AutoCAD tasks/workflows. Aside from fake reviews it's hard to find much information on ActCAD in English which indicates it's not very widely used by English speakers (meaning you're on your own if something doesn't work - but that is often the case with Autodesk products anyways). The issue plaguing the industry is that so many vendors are marketing focused. Nobody wants to do real work and demonstrate objectively that their product will work for their customers. They just want to sucker dumb managers into committing to their products. Vendors that rely on resellers are often the most out of touch. Successful upstarts are actually hiring people to do live demos and prove what the software can do, and even showing how to work around what the software cannot do. I think the title of "Best Value AutoCAD-style Program" is really for the taking right now for whichever company wants to actually look at what their customers need.
funny, I had a really hard time modeling my first fork, the lugged crown seemed to be really difficult to model accurately in rhino
Rhino should actually be way better at it. In hindsight I never should have even gone into this much detail in a Revit model. I need to model a bike like this in Rhino as some point so maybe I could do that in the near future. And I actually have a spare fork in the same room as the computer which I'm sitting at; having a reference object handy makes it so much easier.
THANK YOU SO MUCH! I have been looking hard for a way to override that annoying F1 with another command!
Thank you so much❤❤
Hello, where are the real-time dimensions?
Where can I obtain the code? This was very helpful
Unfortunately the code is lost. I have made a new improve version which is included with my template: ua-cam.com/video/GNQ7n7sM3lE/v-deo.html
do you have these lisps available for down load?
interesting workflow! I think the way you overlay shaded and line work gets a nice result. Personally I've always used a block for each story, containing both 2d and 3d. I line up all of them separately for main editing and drawing, while the stacked ones are the assembled building. nice work, keep going!
I'd love to see more of your method. One reason I don't like annotating in Layout Space is when you have things that are annotations, but tied to physical elements. This can include elevation symbols that show the actual elevations and grid lines. I've been pondering ways to make these work. Programmatically I can create elevation symbols in model space (they won't automatically update when changed/moved but I can almost do that as well). Grid lines create a challenge but maybe we could 'tag' them just like we do for windows, walls, floors, etc... The way my house project is set up you could actually annotate similar to what you describe. The 2D line work is laid out flat in the model space (just without the 3D floor elements). I like the block idea. One thing I've had trouble coming to grips with is Rhino's block editing. It's a smooth transition to and from the block editor... a bit too smooth. Nested blocks can especially create confusion. I had some good success utilizing Visual Arq's plan and section views; they (kind of) automatically update. They had a few glitches that they may or may not fix in Visual ARQ 3. With a bit of tuning up that would be the system I use. Without though it's too much working-around.
Great video! Thanks.
THANK YOU
You genius bro! Love your voice tone
