Updates of the XJ modifications.
Found an old XJ in a field that needed a lot of work. After getting the motor rebuilt, we started doing our own modifications to it. The wife and kids got involved with replacing some of the interior, cutting, grinding and painting. This is what it looks like so far.

Mud, snow and rain at Bundy Hill Off Road Park.

We had family visiting us from out-of-town, so we thought we'd taken them out and show them a good time. Ha! Bundy Hill was wet and muddy that day. The snow was mixing with rain making it cold for an April day of 2019. But the kids didn't seem to mind so much, especially when we found some large water holes to "play" in. We met some new friends... turns out we have several unusual things in com...

TWO trips to Hocking Hills in one month! We were glad for the change of scenery vs countless trips to Bundy Hill. Spent the weekend camping with some friends (no pics of the campground for a reason, ugh), but the weather was perfect and the trails idyllic for a much needed break from the usual grind.

While spending another day with friends at Bundy Hill Off Road Park near Jerome, Michigan; we happened to catch sight of this crazy green Jeep taking on boulders bigger than the kids. We hooked up with some locals to find these. Unfortunately, a lot of "outside" people have come in with SxS, bikes, Jeeps, etc and have destroyed local properties. A lot of these trails run inches from personal properties and some of the angrier locals are starting to take action. (Imagine some deep backwoods, in the dark, where no one will hear you and you can't see them coming... yeah.) I would advise reaching out to a local group down there. They will take you along, advise on what to watch for and how to find and run trails without jeopardizing anyone's safety or property.

    Several of these traits look very familiar to me. Granted that it have not lived in that area since 1994 and seeing your videos makes me miss my old CJ8 Scrambler with 4 inch suspension lift, 4 inch shackle lift, 34 inch BFG Mud Terrain tires with the stock inline 6 cylinder bored 40 over. Many good times in that Jeep over the years. Unfortunately I had to sell it off in 99 when the body was ate up with rust and I didn't have the funds to do a proper frame up restoration. But now that I might be moving back to the area I have been thinking about getting another Jeep preferably an old CJ to restore. But there's far and few of them around these days. But what is available is typically expensive and restored to stock and not for off road fun. So I might just have to pick up a Wrangler and build it up. But unfortunately theirs just something special about the old classic CJs and the Willys era Jeeps.

      There's several good trails in the Hocking Hills area and over in the Nelsonville, (by the old state prison facility but the state might have shut that down) Chauncey area as well. But I have been out of the area for a long time now but back when I was living up there . I used to go to the various county engender offices in the area and get the county maps that showed all the roads, old mines, and towns. I also had found an atlas that showed the "conditionally unpassable "roads to find other possible Jeep trails and old roads back in the day. But they were definitely a huge help to find some good places to go off roading and Jeeping in the area. I was able to find a ton of decent places in the county and in the surrounding area. So you might want to check into some of those old county maps. I hope that you are able to find some places to go and find some new friends that enjoy some offroad adventures.

      It's been a while since I was Jeeping in that area but back then you would be fine in a stock 4wd vehicle on about 90% of the old non maintained roads like that. But I would definitely get some decent tires while you are deciding on what to modify on your ride. Good all terrain tires will definitely get you through most terrain in the area But if you are going to be using your rig mostly off road I would definitely think about the lift kits and oversized tires as a starting point. I just wouldn't get too crazy with the lifting. Unless you are willing to spend some decent money to do it right. When I had my old lifted CJ 8 I did it in stages such as when I needed to replace the shocks and springs I did the lift kit. Then I got the larger tires to go with the lift. When I needed to replace the muffler after an incident with a rock I ended up putting in a performance exhaust system etc. It did take some time to get everything that I wanted to do with it done it did make it more affordable than putting a pile of money down to do everything immediately. Granted that I had an engine fire a few months after getting it and I had the engine built up when I was having the engine and wiring redone after the fire. After that I was always having something else done when it was in the shop for a repair or what not. I can definitely say that once you get the bug and enjoy exploring the old back roads theirs always something that you are wanting to get done. Lol

      These trails are actually some of the unmaintained county roads. But several run extremely close to, or directly on to the private property of several local residents. So we always have to be careful to only wheel precisely where some of the locals have shown us is "safe".

    • @AW-sg9wd
      @AW-sg9wd 2 роки тому

      @OffLegend Well said some of the property owners are very protective of their property and get pretty angry when they find large ruts in their yards or fields. Some people will get the law on you as well. Back when I was living in the area I would always stop and ask people who were outside for permission to explor a trail near their kind. Most of the time they are cool with it as long as you fix any damage that you might have caused. I have even gone as far as offering to help repair other people's damage to build up trust and gain access. But sometimes they just don't want to hear it and deal with the traffic on the property. But you never know what they will say till you talk to them about a trail. But I have also seen people get guns pulled on them for being a jerk after damaging private property. But those are typically pretty obvious when you see the house lol. Granted that things are probably very different with the meth problem back in some of those remote hollers and old mining lands. Back in the day I even got access to an old power plant that had shut down and I was able to get permission to explor the land and cut up some trees for firewood as long as they were marked and already down. But that was years ago and things are very different now.

      Actually you can get a map of the county roads from the county engineers office for a few dollars. It's definitely worth a few bucks to see what the unmaintained roads and Conditionally unpassable roads are in the country. I have picked up several over the years. I think that they are around $7 now but it has been a few years since I have checked online on the website. I currently don't live there but plan on moving back in the next year or two. But I will definitely be going down to the Engineers office and picking up a few of the maps since they also have the old mine towns , and grave yards on the maps as well as the roads. But the maps are not going to show the private mining , natural gas, cell phone tower access roads or anything like that or private roads. Just the country owned roads. Also I used to have an atlas that showed a bunch of the roads like that . I got it at the Old Super America gas stations close to 30 years ago and wish that I still had it. They might still carry the atlas at whatever company took over the Super America gas stations. I discovered it checking to see if it showed some of the old roads that I used to explore in my CJ 8 Jeep and picked it up when I saw that it did have them and several other roads. Unfortunately they are not always accurate and most people do not mess with maps these days which all the GPS apps on the smart phones. But it is what it is. Good luck with your search for trails to explorer. If you are in Athens County I can give you a few places to get started and help find some places. But things have changed up in that area and some roads have litterally been changed or removed. Such as the old Darwin trails that now have a highway built over the area. But I have not lived there since 1994 and so some places are no longer in existence.

    • @AW-sg9wd
      @AW-sg9wd 2 роки тому

      @OffLegend Actually they do have a map with some of the old roads and trails at the county Engineers office . At least they do down in Athens County and it was available before covid hit. I totally agree with you about all the damage that has been done over the years getting areas closed off to the Off Roading enthusiasts. I grew up in this area and know of several different areas that we used to go exploring. I am planning on moving back to the area in the next year or so and would be happy to tag along with you and compare notes . Granted that I will need to buy another Jeep and build it before I can get back into it like I was when I was living there. Being in Southern Florida doesn't justify the cost of having a 4wd toy for the weekends but up there definitely justifies having 4wd for the snow alone lol.

      I grew up in that area and was told about a few places such as Coal Run Road out in Chauncy or the roads behind the old prison in Nelsonville. Back then there was also a big problem with outsiders leaving the open roads and trespassing on private roads and property because of that many places ended up having gates installed or barriers put across the road. But I would definitely go to the local county engineers office and pick up the old county maps that shows the various county, township roads and the roads that the county has classified as Conditionally Unpassable and the un maintained roads. Those old maps were a big help in finding places to go exploring in the Jeep. That was a great place to start for me and I always did my best to tread lightly and be friendly and helpful to the folks who live out in those places. In time I was getting told by people that they have an old logging or mining road on their property and was given permission to explor it along with a friend just in case we needed to get pulled out of a mud hole or something. I would also suggest going for drives on the various back roads around the area that you live. I found a few places back in the day just by cruising the back roads and using the various old county road maps that I could get a hold of. I also found an atlas being sold at the old Super America gas stations that had all the Conditionally unpassable and the unmaintained roads in the state and surrounding states. That was also very helpful and well worth the $20 for the atlas. I hope that helps you out on your quest to find places to go explore. Just be safe and smart about doing things and never trespassing on private property. I would be more than happy to show you some of the places that I used to go, when I was still living in the area. I moved out of the area way back in 1994, but I definitely miss living there and I would love to move back at some point and build a new off road CJ or a Willys Wagon if I ever get that lucky to find one in decent shape.

But I hope to be back in the near future. Then I will start building a new Jeep and getting back into it. I miss it and had so much fun back in the day.

    Very enjoyable watch! The on trail camera turned out to work well.

      As far as I'm concerned... she totally out-flexed everyone that day. LOL

    Any clearance issues with the new tires?

      Not at first. But once we tried running fully packed and loaded we found it would rub against the plastic inner fender well. Ordered some 3/4" spacers... should do the trick.
