How to Make Cheap Concrete Weights and Molds!
How to make your own super cheap cardboard molds and concrete weight plates for your weight lifting needs! 440lbs (200kg) of weight plates for $136 USD
Molds and weights for 45, 25, 10, & 5lbs (20.4, 11.3, 4.5, 2.3kgs)
Mold Dimension Diagram: imgur.com/gallery/2dmCR6k
You can use the bottom of 5gal buckets, instead of making a 10lb mold :)
Easiest/cheapest ways to draw large custom circles = a ruler with holes in it or a pre-measured string around a nail with a pencil at the end (both ways function the same)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
No fancy tools are required; however, I would HIGHLY recommend an angle grinder for finishing work. You can use sanding discs, flap discs, or concrete/masonry grinding wheels, but I found diamond cup wheels to be the fastest and most durable when grinding concrete. However, they are expensive, I used the Ridgid 4.5” Turbo Cup Wheel at $60 USD.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cardboard Mold Pros:
Very cheap and customizable, can make as many as you want for super cheap, as accurate as you make them
Cons:
As accurate as you make them, might produce ugly plates, can leak moisture if not made well, not super reusable, takes time to make
Plastic Mold Pros:
Nicer looking weights, more consistent sized plates, more reusable, can retain moisture better, built in weight numbers
Cons:
Expensive, not very customizable, might be out of stock/production, takes time to ship
Plastic Mold Sellers:

Weight Materials USD:
Concrete (I used Quikrete 5000) - $5.25 per 50lb bag
Rebar 3/8”x48” US #3 SI #10 - $3.10 per 45lb plate
Chicken Net 24”x10ftx12” - $17.99 1 package used in 8x45lbs, 2x25lbs, 2x10lbs, 2x5lbs
Latex-ite Trowel Patch 1gal - $11.97 (I’d recommend a concrete/driveway filler sealer $30-40 5gal)
ABS/PVC Pipe 2”x2ft - $3.58
Mold Materials USD:
Cardboard - Free "29 Places to Get Free Boxes" bit.ly/3mtXCQw
Plastic drop cloth/paint tarp/trash bags - $3-$8 (I used one 9ftx12ft plastic drop cloth for $7)
Duck Tape - $10 per 3 pack (I used 3 rolls for 6x45lb, 2x25lb, and 1x5lb molds)
Tools I used USD:
Bathroom Weight Scale - $20
Metal Ruler with homemade radius holes- $8
Cheap Tape Measure - $6
5gal bucket - $4 (I used 3 buckets $12)
Concrete trowel small 5”x2” - $10
Hand saw - $10 (for cutting the pipes I used a miter saw $220 you definitely don’t need this)
Wire/metal Snippers - $10 (I used Wiss 9-3/4” compound action aviation snips 18 Ga. $18)
Scissors - $7
Box Cutter - $5
Shovel - $8 (used for mixing concrete by hand)
4.5”x6” Corded Angle Grinder - $150
Ridgid 4.5” Turbo Cup wheel - $60
Total Raw Weight Material Cost 440lbs in plates (without tools) ≈ $117 USD
8 - 3/8”x48” Rebar $25
10 - 50lb bags of concrete used $55
2 - 2”x2ft ABS/PVC pipe for the 34” needed $7
1 - Latex-ite Trowel Patch 1gal - $12
1 - Chicken Net 24”x10ftx12” - $18
My Total Mold Cost ≈ $19 USD (6x45lb molds, 2x25lb molds, 1x5lb mold)
3 - duck tape rolls $12
1 - 9ftx12ft Plastic drop cloth $7
Finished 440lbs of weight plates without tools ≈ $136

    Can you please tell me how to calculate the different circumferences for the different size weights as i would like to make like kg plates rather than lbs

    • @UnoozerActual
      @UnoozerActual 2 місяці тому

      No worries! That's why I tried to include metric as well. So the same measurements should get you roughly the same kg plates. Might want to take a single small trowel full of the concrete out as kg plates are slightly lighter than lbs. As far as a 25kg plate, I'm not too sure what would make 25kg/55lbs? Maybe a couple inches or like 5cm wider in diameter, or 1 inch or 2-3cm taller might work?

    I'm mean as hell and don't wanna buy a scale 🤪 can't i just fill the 20 kg cardboard mold? Super accuracy not critical, I don't use olympic bar but cheap or dyi bars. I will just make 2 as identical as i can. Thanks.

      @@BrainFogDanellesReviews I do indeed! Truck bed liner would've been better and give better texture, but the stuff I used isn't terrible. Just flaky? Not big flakes but the coating isn't as permanent and leaves like "grains" behind haha not dust, but not large like sand either. The concrete itself is fine but can't be dropped. I accidentally dropped a 45 on the hard floor and a decent chip came out. Probably a pound or so haha! But they work and I use them on my homemade pully machine thing too!

    I have had these for several weeks ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxP26Tir6n60vUkdtn4mbwhRO8cwuJQNy2 and I have been really happy with them so far. I love being able to do a variety of workouts at home when I don't have time to make it to the gym. When paired with a basic bench, there are tons of different exercises and you can hit pretty much all major muscle groups. It is easy to adjust to your desired weight with the dials on each side. They slide in and out of the cradle smoothly. The only downside to this design vs the newer version, is that these are pretty wide. This does limit your range of motion with certain hand positions on certain exercises. Straight dumbbell press would be an example of this. I have to turn my hands slightly in order to bring them close enough together. Not a huge deal to me though. Really happy with this purchase and would definitely recommend.

    Hi - I'm in a pickle as i made two 20kg weight plates but the hole in the middle is 2mm off so doesn't fit my barbell. Would really appreciate if anyone has advice on what i can do to make the hole just slightly bigger. I've tried hand sanding with a 40grit sandpaper but don't seem to have any luck and any normal sanding tool won't fit in that hole. Any advice on how to do it would be a lifesave right now!

    • @UnoozerActual
      @UnoozerActual Рік тому

      That is a pickle indeed lemme think of some options. You could try a Dremel tool with sanding bits/burrs or there are small 1in portable belt sander tools that might work to reach in those places, or a knife to peel off inner layers, you might even be able to run a drill with a standard HSS bit to sorta "mill" out the inner material, uhhhh ya all I can think rn

    • @Jordan-dt7wd
      @Jordan-dt7wd Рік тому

      @@UnoozerActual Thank you - really appreciate the advice! What seemed to work was the standard drill with quite a tough drill bit (so it could handle the hard concrete) and it was able to do the job. I'm now super happy and just about to make some extra 5kg plates now!

    • @Jordan-dt7wd
      @Jordan-dt7wd Рік тому

      Just to add more info for anyone that finds themselves in the same situation. I used the drill to do circular motions around the circumference of the hole to gradually make it bigger. So essentially the sides of the drill bit were carving out and making the hole bigger.

      Hmmm depends. On a hard surface I can say without a doubt, no. I took a decent Chunk out of one of my plates by accidentally dropping it on the floor. But with rubber mats then maybe? Honestly I just would try to refrain from dropping them which sucks but probably for the best
