Chiricahua Peak 9,759’ & Monte Vista Peak 9,357’ | Ultra-prominent Loop Hike | Arizona
For hikers interested in ultra-prominent peaks, Chiricahua Peak is the 55th most prominent in the lower 48 states, just ahead of Miller Peak in the Huachuca Mountains. What is ultra-prominence? This link explains it: www.summitpost.org/ultra-prominence-peaks-of-the-48-states/174556 Personally I'm not a peak bagger; I just like being out in the mountains. But kudos to those hikers out there on the peaks! ua-cam.com/channels/BCEyUL_PuYJr7zjPUUt7jQ.html My route was a 15-mile loop, up Mormon Ridge Trail to Chiricahua Peak Trail, to Chiricahua Peak. Then I hiked along the Crest Trail to Monte Vista Peak, and down Morse Canyon and Forest Road 41 (Turkey Creek) until I was back at my car. There is 4,700’ of elevation gain, 2,600’ of it in the first 3½ miles.
Directions to the trailhead: I started my hike at the Mormon Ridge trailhead. To get there take US 191 along the west side of the Chiricahuas until you turn east onto State Route 181. Eventually the road turns into the dirt Forest Road 41 (aka Turkey Creek Rd.). Continue to the Mormon Ridge trailhead. There was one car parked there when I arrived, and it was still there when I left. I saw one hunter sitting on the trail about a mile into my hike, and I heard a shot about 20 minutes later. At the start of the Chiricahua Peak trail I ran into several folks who were on a Green Valley Hiking Club hike, and it sounded like they were having a great time!
The first known identification of these mountains by western people was in 1588 when Spaniards identified the Chiricahua Mountains on a map as the “Tierra de Chiriguana.” Later maps and reports used the name Chiguicagui" and "Chi-ri-ca-hui". The name may have been based on Opata Indian words that mean "mountain of the wild turkeys."

Just hiked it today. Beautiful video, beautiful hike.
Terrific! This is a great time of year for that hike.🥾
That's a long hike. I've done Monte Vista Peak twice and that was enough for me. I'll do Chiricahua Peak someday and leave out Monte Vista. Good work!
Hiking from Rustler Park Campground along the Crest Trail to Chiricahua Peak is a shorter and much easier hike. Not much elevation gain at all! Longer drive though...
Yum candy corn. Boy that is a long hike you did.! I didn’t know that meant wild turkeys. Very interesting.
👍🏻I'm tired!

4,700 feet elevation gain! 💪 I am envious your intact fully operational knees, endurance and duct tape MacGyver skills.
Duct tape will fix anything! I'll probably be using it on my knees one day.😂
Thank you for another great video. Were those rocks @1:36 part of the trail? Did you have to scramble up that hill?
I think I accidentally made it look like you have to hike up those rocks. But actually there's just a several hundred yards-long rockfall down the slope and as switchbacks take you up the slope the trail goes across the rocks several times. So yes they are part of the trail, but you don't have to scramble up them, only go across them.
This is a great video! Thank you !
When I was younger if anyone had told me that the best years of my life would be in my 60s I would have had a good laugh.🥾🤔
I retired from the military from the Fort. Would you happen to know the gps coordinates to the crashsite. I want to hike up there and see if I can find it. I hiked up to Huachuca peak several years ago.
No, I don't have the coords for the site. If you have the Trails of the Huachucas trail guide, the route to it is described in the Huachuca Peak Trail write-up. Having been there a few times I can say that the hike to it is easier via Lyle Canyon/Huachuca Peak Trails on the west side of the Huachucas. That west side route is faint in some areas, but the route starting on Ft Huachuca via Huachuca Canyon/Peterson Peak Trails is even more faint in various sections and it's much steeper. Good luck, it's an adventure!
@@karenflynnhikes Thanks.
Did this hike with my son in March 2024.
I hope you enjoyed it. It's right up there in my top favorite hikes and views.

@@Exe.6000 Follow Ash Canyon Road until it ends at the large brown Forest Service sign.
I've been watching your videos where in the Huachuca are quartz crystals found?
There is a lot of white quartz along the trail at the Reef Campground at the top of Carr Canyon. I've never found much quartz that has shiny crystals in it, but sometimes I'll find a small piece laying randomly along a trail.
@ You know the wash next to the parking area in Ash Canyon is supposed to be a place to collect crystal quartz?
@@sherryshirey2981 Yes, there are active mining claims in that area of Ash Canyon, so you have to be aware of what is private property.

What a lovely scenery my friend! Shots and your narration are amazing!
Thanks for the native peoples context. Much appreciated. Am a fan of your hike videos. We call the little ball bearings the 'rolly pollies'.
I'm glad you liked this one. It's such a historic range. Rolly pollies is the perfect name for those little rocks!
Lots of roly-pollies in the Mule & Whetstones Mountains as well!
Can you do one about the plane wreck on Mt. Humphreys?
I love the photo at the end!
Susan is best!💖
What a beautiful place!!!❤
It was a real treat of a hike after this crazy hot summer!
I did the same hike without Centella Point and bushwhacked to Riggs Peak prior to Fly’s Peak back July 15, 2023. Great hike. Lots of blowdowns. Love that mountain range! 🥾🌲🌞
In Nov 2023 a work crew spent a couple weeks removing 60+ blowdowns and the trail is clear now which makes the route really enjoyable.

I did a similar route in that area a couple of months ago. I ended up going up to Fly's peak from the south side on the "trail", which sounds like the same trail you lost. I don't think many people use that side as there is definently parts of the trail that disapear.
It's beautiful up there, and I wish I'd had the time to continue to Chiricahua Peak.⛰🥾
Beautiful. The Chiricahua region is one of my favorites when I get to your part of the country.
Great hiking and so much history.

Nice dear🎉🎉❤❤
This is the first time I've seen anything of or from Patscott peak in 40 years. This brings back memories. The question I have is if the post office is still there?
There is no post office remaining anywhere in the Huachucas as far as I know. I know there was once one in Sunnyside Canyon, but I believe it was closed in the 1930s or earlier.
Such a great message! One of your videos inspired me to participate and complete (2 peaks) the Sky Island Challenge this year!

Another great video! What a pretty trail.
🥾It's a nice canyon to hike in.
My philosophy at 60 years old is "hike until you drop".
That's the best philosophy. Some of the folks I sometimes hike with are in their late 70s to mid 80s which is a good way to remember that it's not over 'til it's over.🙂
I really wish the forest service would rebuild the cabin that used to be on Miller peak. Went up there with friends of mine in 1986 to see Halleys Comet. It was a great experience. The sunset and sunrise were breathtaking.
You're an inspiration!

Wow I see the top of this Mtn everyday, so cool there are cows/bulls 🌵🐄🐂up there I need to go visit soon!! Thx for the cool video!!
Moved to Tucson in 2022. Been up Mt Lemmon well north of 100x being an avid outdoorsman and a volunteer Forest Service Wilderness Ranger through SGWA since 2011. From afar I have had interest in the Rincons but then my daughter's classmate and first crush Micah passed away. Since then we together have been looking at maps. We've taken two last minute trips to the foothills but now I'm working in Vail and being so close to Micah Mountain, the peak is screaming my name. Thanks for posting this video, time to hit Peak #23 for me and #1 for my eldest daughter 😊
Watching the video for the second time, I yelled out loud, "that's the road we took !" Lol
@@RangerMikeLVI It's really lovely on that side of the Rincons. 🥾👍🏼
The hiking club seems like so much fun. Thanks for another great video. I was wondering if any of you hikers carry bear spray. I travel to Arizona sometimes and I'm thinking of bringing bear spray next time, but it might be too hot. It shouldn't be left in the car at high temperatures. Any advice?
When I'm hiking with a group I don't carry bear spray. A few people walking along, chatting and laughing won't be bothered by the shy bears in these mountains. When I'm by myself I usually have a small marine air horn that blasts a loud noise. I can press the button while it's attached to my pack vs. bear spray which I would have to pull out, take off the safety and then try to spray at an upset animal. That said, there have been no reports of any attack of any large animal in the Huachucas in any recent time (like since 1973 at least). 🥾🐻🙂
@@karenflynnhikes Thank you! I appreciate the locals perspective on the Huachucas.
Nice hike. Thanks for sharing!

I'm thinking you could also come up the Bear Canyon trail to the same saddle, do the same loop and then head out Bear Canyon. The advantage is you don't have to worry about the Preserve locking its gate with your car still inside. I'm a slower hiker than you and that might be important.
Yes, your idea is a good one. Bear Canyon is a really lovely and quiet canyon.
Cool to see another Huachucas enthusiast! There's a summit register tucked in a crack at the top... between it, Lyle, and Rattlesnake, it's easily the least visited "named" summit in the range. Though straight up from that saddle between Peterson and Lyle, the trek to the top isn't bad. If you can find a car capable of getting up to the parking area at Gate 7, it's 10X easier going from there (Gate 7 is easier to get to from outside of Fort Huachuca, coming from the west side IMO.) Honor First.
So many great hikes, and almost right out the back door!
