I like comedy and talking about how phones affect art.
Why is it so hard capturing Gen-Z on screen?
Why is it so hard to capture an authentic 2024 high school experience on camera?
Why does every TV show or movie feel like it's in a faux 2000's version of high school?
How the digital age reshaped relationships, why that's hard to depict on screen, and left Gen-Z out of the high school canon.
----------
Also, I don't know if all my references are up to date. The kids are changing so fast. What is dress to impress? I don't know.

i like this
hm i like the way this person speaks
grand army (netflix show)
High school movies depicting authentic high school experiences are kinda like flesh colored bandaids pre-2010…
Great video man, I really appreciate the conciseness too-- way too many 20-minute video essays on 10-minute topics. Super great work.
I don’t really mind not having phones incorporated into films, since these stories are supposed to highlight the most interesting aspects of the characters’ lives. Maybe an important phone call, but being hunched over with your phone scrolling on Snapchat is not very interesting.
Not sure I agree with the notion that phones are important enough to be depicted on screen. maybe there is a critique of our cellular lives specifically based on this issue.
I think outer banks did a pretty good job of feeling authentic to my teenage years. It’s obviously an unrealistic and over exaggerated story, but the way the characters act felt rlly familiar when I watched it in high school
watching this video cause i got homeschooled for high school and need to know what i missed out on
This also made me realize that the genZ experience is really different for every individual, there are many online spaces for different interests and also your physical location has a great impact on the way you communicate, for example, where i live everyone just stopped using Snapchat after 2019-ish, even in some places i know some genZ still uses facebook (nad I'm talking about born 2005-2008), and some of us don't relay on our phones that much. So in general is just really hard to capture all the things we feel and the unique experiences we share
I think personally the movie “metal lords” is very accurate to gen z highschool experience 💀
“GROWN~ISH” IS THEEEE BEST EXAMPLE OF TECHNOLOGY AND ITS EFFCTS ON GEN-Z!!! Check this show out please!! Zoey is a character but show is bomb!!‼️
Spider-Man Homecoming does it really well
Steven universe handled the phone thing really well
First generation of Skins was great at capturing teens
Thanks Paul, great video essay, very informative :)
watch bottoms 2023
This is great! Something that you touched on more briefly is that the modern culture moves so darn fast; stuff insanely relevant one month is out of date and cringe the next, and movies can't work on those timescales. Just remember the Emoji Movie.

In my opinion the Italian netflix show "baby" includes phones and social media quite well. I love the show, it kind of accurately portrays what it's like being a (rich) teenager in europe (without the being a literal prostitute part of course..)
6:15 I'm in my 30s and the idea of having a crush/partner watch me scroll through my entire camera roll sounds horrible lol. Does Gen Z curate their camera roll for others' eyes? Do you put all the personal stuff in a hidden folder?
This was well said and well made! Keep it up!

I find your point about social media and romance quite interesting. Although I do have an objection. I haven’t experienced many of those “Universal“ moment to talk about. Like receiving a good morning message, or getting a gold heart on Snapchat. I have many friends online, but I could not say that I have been fortunate to experience those moments. of those experiences even happened to me. That and I have come to test the all-consuming nature or social media. I don’t care when TV shows or movies talk about the ins and outs of social media, because they don’t seem to matter to what people do on a day-to-day basis, at least at this point. Since unless once you just broadcast a great deal themselves online, there is a little that one can actually know about another person unless told.
As a fan of Japanese media, I have come across very many animes and mangas where smartphones, texting, pictures, group chats, wallpapers, etc. take a pretty significant role in the story. These can be anywhere between slice of life, romance, comedy, to even suspense. Some of these stories integrate Gen-Z technology very naturally, some others not so much. Also Gen-Z are quickly becoming adults and starting to work, so it doesn't have to be limited to high school experience anymore.
Why the spatuala and pov shot that looks like it's from the sink? Also, nearly all retrospective 80s movies that are set in say 1982 use music from later than that year. So, from someone who lived the 80s. That's annoying. My point is accuracy (not inauthenticity) is prevalent throughout media. Your generation isn't unique that way.
That’s because gen z are highly regarded
5:13 REALLY!? I feel like she looks just like the high school kids I went to school with, she even acts like she was pulled straight out of there to act
I adore core core! Your video is great, thank you! I wanted to add, how often the line between core core and hope core is very fine, at least for me. At any moment there is a video of a flower, an ocean, any nature vids, it gives me an enormous feeling of hope as in hopelessness. There is so much of everything that nothing matters, i feel so lonely while there is such a world around me and in this age i don't even have the time to appreciate it. And i get the possibility to appreciate it exactly while watching these 60-sec videos, and i love it. It comforts me
I would love for there to be a high school drama about kids struggling academically and competing for grades. Can't believe that this hasn't been done yet.
OK, I admit it. Had low expectations but this was surprisingly insightful and informative. Well done Paul, a throughly deserved thumbs up.
Omg you have a straight line on your palm too!!!
Watching this has made me realise just how disconnected I am from my Gen Z peers. I just turned 20, and yes, the behaviours you've described are pretty much those I see in my friends, but I just don't use social media with my friends, I just have my small group of friends who I text. I have notice I miss out on a lot of interactions but at the same time I don't know that I'd say I feel bad for it. Everything _is_ too fast-paced. I can't keep up with the memes, can't keep up with what my friends are doing always, but at least I get my mental quiet time lol
SRAM(the new SKAM remake) is honestly so close to us and so true to life imo
Big Time Adolescence was pretty good
I don’t understand, Euphoria is one of the best depictions of teenagehood I’ve ever seen and it’s gen z and uses phones a lot
See, while the argument that a lot of TV sitcom drama could be resolved with phones is true, social media raises its own problems. Too many young people in the world equate the social media landscape with reality, "So-and-so posted pictures of x, therefore I think they're y. Social media is catering to my worldview, and it's a struggle when I meet actual people who oppose it, etc." I think social media makes a great framing device; you just need a show that leans into that kind of drama.
...euphoria literally has a whole grindr plot
“Maybe we can’t express the world through landscape when we view it through portrait” What a disgusting sentence
What's hard to capture about mindless tik-tok scrolling?
Lots of comments about technology and little about the interactions between people.
american vandal is the most realistic tbh
i love you
I’m guessing you haven’t watched the Norwegian tv show SKAM.
the nrowegian show SKAM and the movie 8th grade are the only two peices of media that i have ever felt captured a semi realistic teenage experiance
Short form videos are barely capable of expressing anything compareable to a 2 hour long movie and are poising your dopamine system, rewriting your reward matrix, resulting in a brainrotted person unable to focus and think about their material conditions in any meaningful way. And no, people wont make good movies about snapchat interactions or kids spending 8 hours on their smartphone, it's cringy. Instead, it will be infinite referals to old movies where social interactions were more intact or some microcosm where it's still, friends going into a bar etc. Movies are dying, in a sense that a marvel movie is a dead movie, senseless and emotionless. Just like the people who create them are dying, sensually and emotionally, atomizied.
Actors aren't allowed to play regarded anymore. That's why.
I think "Eighth Grade" did it well but what do I know? I'm a millennial lol (a young one though, a '94 baby...)
I definitely think phones can be captured well, because I see them used effectively in short form video content skits, which does give me hope for the future of teen movies
I feel like anime movies like "your name" as well as others dipicts gen z very well in highschool. A good balance and its easy to resonate with.
