    Why do I get the felling you could take a Megladon, and live to tell the tail? All silliness aside, for someone who's outside of Hornby(literally an ocean, and all of Pennsylvania, and eastern Ohio between me & the closest Hornby dealer),would you still recommend that engine? I'm looking at some options from the Isles at the moment, just askin' around, and not looking for famous engines for somewhat obvious reasons.

      So if its your first time buying OO gauge, you need to remember British OO gauge is out of scale so locos are slightly bigger than they should be which may cause issues with clearances, i.e. Catching the platform etc. The other thing to check is if anyone else in the US has used a loco with the HM7000 decoder, or at least check compatibility of the HM7000 with your controller of choice, as the decoder can burn out more easily than others it seems if the power supply is not correct.

    What you say is all true, but if I may say so, Hornby instructions (I am reading from my K1) say "Lubricate ... 6 monthly ... or every 100 hours of running". Hornby provide a diagram showing where to put oil, but say nothing about removing the old oil first or how to do that. And how do you remove the old oil from locos where access to the chassis and gears is limited / difficult? Most railway modellers are not experts and you can't blame them for doing what Hornby tell them to do. Manufacturers should provide better instructions, and should design their models with better access for servicing by "the average modeller" to use a term coined, I think, by Mr C.J. Freezer.

    • @DaveAtLittleton
      @DaveAtLittleton 28 днів тому

      Instructions normmaly say a drop, so given the amount of oil, I'd say the previous owner didn't follow them in this instance however I 100% agree, manufacturers should make instructions clearer and servicing more accessible and that might have helped in this situation 👍

      @@DaveAtLittletonEvery application of micro trains couplers has been for N scale or Z scale. For HO/OO Kadee make a series of couplers to plug into NEM coupling pockets. These have published standards of coupler height and other important dimensions on each pack as well as coupler height gauges to quickly check if it is a go or no go height. Quite different to tension lock couplings which it seems every maker has critical dimensions different and nothing published as to what the standards makers should be complying with. This has a lot to do with the problems you are having. These issues were the reason my club standardised on Kadee couplings for operation on our extensive club layout. Our frequent timetabled operating sessions with effectively seven large stations really highlight the need for reliable couplings operating almost entirely hands off. Hands off for both coupling and uncoupling which also helps avoid damage to stock and the layout.

  • @OlivierGabin
    @OlivierGabin 2 місяці тому

    Dapol couplers are notoriously fragile and unreliable. If your wagons have NEM couplers, you can replace them by Hornby couplers, unfortunately a little by pricey (around the GBP 12 mark for a 10-pack).

    • @DaveAtLittleton
      @DaveAtLittleton 2 місяці тому

      I heard Dapol had brought production of the couplings back to the UK, as some of my stock is brand new, I was hoping they would be good but they are not. I will try as you say, but also, adding weight to the wagons to stop them riding up

  • @alanbarker0901

    • @DaveAtLittleton
      @DaveAtLittleton 4 місяці тому

      It really depends on the loco, some are very easy to service, others are a real pain. I'd say the easiest loco to service (so far) are the older tri-ang locos, overall they have very few parts, zero delicate pieces, and they come apart very easily, usually 2 easy to access screws hold the shell on and they you can pretty much clean the entire thing easily with cotton buds. They only thing I'd say is, if you are using rubbing alcohol like me, keep it away from shell and when cleaning the wheels, careful not to get it on the painted spokes, if you do, don't rub it off, just let it dry naturally and it should be fine. They are also cheap, so get a second hand one to practice on for your first attempt, there are loads of videos on YT on how to service them. If you tempted, give it a try, servicing locos can actually be quite fun, relaxing and very satisfying when you see how well it works after :)

    For future videos I'd suggest you avoid repetition - 3 minutes on not overdoing oil? And 3 hours to clean it with a huge pile of cotton buds? 1 minute with electrical contact cleaner and a couple of cotton buds is all it needs - see OO Bill videos. I'm afraid I stopped watching the rest of the video.

    • @DaveAtLittleton
      @DaveAtLittleton 5 місяців тому

      Noted, I try to avoided repletion but in videos that are meant to be educational in a sense, repetition is also necessary as it's how people generally learn so there is a balance I have to strike. Yes, I watch OOBill, he's very good, the oil or grease on the loco body was old and had dried and worked its way in to every tight space. I can take apart and clean a loco relatively quick and easily but this one was really bad and that's what led me to making the video.

      @@DaveAtLittletoncan I suggest that you make up a semi-flexible arm to mount whatever you are using for a camera: Basically 3 lengths of 2 x 1. One of them you drill through near both ends (the middle piece), and the other 2 drill through (the same hole size) in one end only. Join the 3 pieces with a couple of bolts with plain washers and WING NUTS, to make an arm which can be positioned any way you want, and locked tight with the wing nuts. At one end fix your camera mount, and at the other end make a foot/ base (a couple of small blocks of wood and a board to do as a foot), which can be clamped in place, or weighted down. Simply position the arm to suit your preferred camera view. Hope this helps.

    You are quite correct about purchasing second hand, it can be a blessing or a curse. However, I wouldn't have touched this one on seeing the damage done to the smokebox, handrail, broken vacuum pipe. In my experience, if it looks clean/as good as new it usually is just that, and that goes for the running characteristics as well. Again if the purchase was made with a makeover in mind then that is another consideration.

      If the price is right or the availability is wrong… N scale Lima SNCF BB67001 serie come to my mind… favorite IRL engine, awful early 70’ model. Spend way too much the first time i got one second hand. Now keep buying them as a secondary hobby. From mint new old stock to yellowed former chew toy…

    Feel for you, not nice to realise that its not worked how you wanted. Its what stops me from getting going with the applicator tbh! 😂... What i would say though is that you could find that static grass on that 'clumpy' grass might actually give a good rough look. I remember seeing wws scenics purposely create a look like that.

    • @DaveAtLittleton
      @DaveAtLittleton 5 місяців тому

      I will have to watch their video to see how they did it, I do want clumpy grass in some areas and I really want it to look like a reflection of natural overgrowth, and less like a clumsy slap dash attempt with too much PVA :)

      @@DaveAtLittleton the technique I've seen involves putting down the scenic grass and then manually clumping it up to create mounds.... Then static grass over the top. Seems to create a nice effect, I've just not got the balls or time to try it myself 😂

    Great idea for this video. Sharing your honest mistakes, so we don't have to make the same ones! One thing about paint colour - here in Canada, our hardware stores have walls of swatches you can choose, and then a paint mixing machine makes the colour on the spot. But to be honest, it wouldn't have mattered much if the shade of green or brown was subtly different once the scatter went down.

      Good idea about colour match. On my new layout I have used wall paint on one place, just they sky, but this time I bought an absolutely huge pot so I don't have to worry about the same problem again

    I agree with Monseville you really could refresh this layout in a weekend The back siding could stay just put a few carriages in there that come close to the point but not too close that it fouls the points the Hornby Lima and mainline couplers will hold fine on that incline with plenty of give The push pull coach you brought could stay as is no need to cut change etc Wiring wouldn’t be too difficult to improve either on a layout that size We all go through that skills improvement thing and see so many things we should improve but in the end we can end up only improving and never enjoying it,which is why we start doing it all running trains and that is supposed to be the main reason we are in the hobby BUT OF COURSE IT IS YOUR LAYOUT AND YOU CAN MAKE /DO WHATEVER YOU LIKE 😊👍

      Thanks RR, you're right, it could be made good, for me, it just got to the point of, how much effort is needed to put it right vs how much effort is needed to rebuild it and just about reached that tipping point for me. Up until now it had been my plan to refurbish it :)

      I think those small layouts are very handy when u just like to shunt and don’t have time to do much else you can really get close to realistic operations with these layouts perhaps think heritage more than a particular railway I’ll be watching it all 😃

    also, if you are modelling a region, turn the fiddle yard into a marshalling yard, holding viable stock within a modelling area is something many modellers miss even if it's only to the front of the yard.

    • @DaveAtLittleton
      @DaveAtLittleton 6 місяців тому

      Again, great suggestion, when I start laying boards for the fiddle yard I will look up images/plans for LMS marshalling yards and perhaps decorate with some simple scenery, something quick and cheap but that looks tidy.

      On my layout, the fiddle yard has cork, gravel paper ballast, and painted the bare board with burnt umber paint. Simple, but makes it part of the layout.
