Dagger Kayaks - Axis and Zydeco Comparison!
After owning a Dagger Axis for two years and with my recent purchase of a Dagger Zydeco I decide to do a comparison of the two Kayaks. For anyone out there looking to purchase either of these kayaks this comparison should help :)

Interesting the Zydeco is the only one without a drop down skeg
Great video as always you prove that you don’t need a $36000 GS1300 and 5 mates to piss off for a few days just throw the saddle bags over the seat and go love it.
Explain how a lift kit doesn’t lift the vehicle? Sure the rear differential won’t be lifted without larger tyres but the the front and rest of the vehicle is lifted, not just the body.
Well done. 👍 Simple is the best way to go. Cheers
New to the Channel & Sub. Great ADV ride. Camping on the river, nice looking bike, enjoying life. Well done, great video 👍
@@DodgerMohr Thanks mate yeah it was my first trip for a while so really enjoyed it. Thanks for watching Regards Steve
Your Channel just popped up on my feed so you have a new sub. When you said you were heading to the Lachlan and doing four dams I thought you might end up near me, Warragamba. The dam holds more water than Sydney harbour when full.
@@MRTangles Yeah originally I was going to go there and then follow the Lachlan down to Hillston but decided I didn't have time so just hit the Lachlan at Lake Cargellico. Great country up there Thanks for watching Regards Steve
Great footage - very relaxing - particularly salami on crackers... 😁 Meaning to ask - how do you find the APJ with nobbies on the tar? Given its not a high revving bike and its a single. Similarly, what tyres you running - I am guessing MotoZ?
Great video being a Victorian myself ive ridin through alot of those areas makes me want to set up an adventure bike and get back out there lookin forward to your next video keep up the great content and remember rubber side down and ride on
@@matfinn279 Thanks Matt we are lucky we have so much good riding in Vic and just over the border.... Thanks for watching Regards Steve
Great ride. I live on the Murrumbidgee near Narrandera so was nice to see it from another perspective, bike sounds sweet, Cheers for picking up the rubbish, unfortunately it can be a common sight left by some people Paul
@@paulwood3876 Yeah great area never been through that strip of country so it was nice to see. Yeah the reality is it very few people who make a mess. The vast majority do the right thing. Thanks for watching Regards Steve
Of course it gives you more ground clearance If you’ve lifted the body, the only thing I can think you’re talking about is things like diffs and axles ps I don’t think you’ve had or been in the right suspension set up you’re talking out of your arse
That set up is good for an overnight trip , any longer than 1 night and it’s useless .
Love ya ethos, Keep it simple stupid !!
Nice touring rig, which tyres are you using and what size?
@@Getgowin Maxxis Razr 265/70 R17. Quite a grippy off-road tyre without being too noisy Thanks for watching Regards Steve
Great intro, I noticed a new addition on the roof, did you get rid of the Axis Kayak?
Yeah mate found the Axis a bit limiting as it can be hard to get in and out of and you have to lift on to the roof and store it when not in use. The 300X can do rapids, flat water and when your finished with it you fold it up and put it on a shelf
Curious...when did you undertake this ride; ie which month as you said it was damn cold but then again when in victoria it isn't.
@@mrdin5332 Hi Mr Din, I was there on the Kings Birthday weekend . The sunday night was the coldest. Frozen me butt off Thanks for watching Regards Steve
GoPro's heh 😬 need a wee dram for those cold nights 👍
@@sausagesandwichSA Yeah even with the enduro batteries they still won't play the game in cold weather. I did enjoy a wee dram.... 😄
AJP on cruise, nice Bit cold for the lithium then - do you just turn it on to warm it up?
@@ozadv Yeah turn on the headlights and let it sit for ten minutes then turn it over, let it rest and repeat. Got the bigger battery now so much better. Not a big fan of lithium to be honest
Have you done a camping trip in your Axis yet? I'm considering getting one, and interested to know how you got on!
Hi Clare, Yes I have done a couple camping trips in the Axis now and it works really good. The trip I am talking about in the video I did and only went a third of the way the water was way too low. I didn't take the wheels in the end so there was a lot of dragging the kayak in the shallows. There is not a ton of room in them so you definitely have to travel light. I stuffed the tent and sleep bag up in the bow and the rest of my gear under the hatch. Looks like a lot of room but it does get a bit tight. Some observations from a beginner, they are a bit of a handful in the rapids a little slow to turn and cumbersome. If you are planning doing a lot of rapids maybe consider the Dagger Katana which has a bit more rocker. Secondly they are a bit difficult to get in and out of it you don't have a shallow bank to pull up to. Thirdly I would consider this model much closer to a touring kayak than a crossover as they are quite quick across the water so you can cover a lot of ground pretty quickly. If your thinking of purchasing one always consider your own weight. I am a 100kg bloke so if you are a lot lighter you can go for a smaller kayak. It's the same for motorbikes start with what you weigh. Hope this helps Regards Steve :)
@@dirtbikeadv Thanks Steve! Really helpful. I've had a demo paddle in the Axis and it felt very "right" for me. I won't be doing a lot of rapids. I'm also happy to travel light. I've got the chance to buy one at a good price so think I'll just go for it! 😊
@@dirtbikeadv Thanks Steve! Really helpful. I'm 54kg and 5'3". And always happy to travel light! I don't think I'm that interested in doing rapids. So I think I might go for the Axis.
I have many friends who lost stuff on the trail by this faulty lugguage system. Greetings from Germany.
Great review and overview. I’m Looking at a cross over like this and this was extremely helpful. Cheers.

Cracking camp spot
Hello.. Curious if you sold the Beta 480. And if so why?.. Im looking to purchase one here in Philippines and travel. Seems like the perfect lightweight dual sport.
Yep I have sold the Beta but for one reason only. I travel huge distances on some of my trips like 800 KMs in a day so an enduro bike is not really suitable for big KMs. I went to a two bike set up an adventure bike for the big trips and a stock enduro bike with a larger tank. My current enduro bike is a Sherco 500. Those Beta's are excellent bikes and are bullet proof they make great dual sport bikes. Thanks for watching Regards Steve
I tried to find the windshield/tower set up to put on the 480 and the company no longer makes it for Betas. Not many other options it appears.
Nice one
Very enjoyable vid, the second night camp would be perfect for a Base Camp for several nights chasing Trout.
Yeah agreed like to spend a week up in that Sawyers hut area Thanks for watching Regards Steve
Great video. yes theres plenty of trout right where you camped i camp there heaps below sawyers hut. I have done this route a few times on my Africa twin all the way up n back from Albury never get sick of it , we are so lucky to live in the best place on Earth. Again awesome video.
Yeah saw a few trout and had a couple of hits but didn't land them. Yeah great part of the world. Thanks for watching Regards Steve
The PR7 is a fantastic bike. I hope AJP can increase production capacity without reducing the build quality. I am thoroughly impressed with mine.
Yeah "thoroughly impressed with mine" is my thoughts as well. Agreed with regards to production and quality, hope they can get it right. Thanks for watching Regards Steve
So how does it stack up as an adventure platform?
Yeah best overall adventure bike in the market. It does most things very well. Not as light or agile as a 500 but far more comfortable, stable and easy to ride on long stints. Not quite as comfortable as a powerful twin but far lighter, more agile, easier to pick up and simpler to live with. Love it.
Thank you for sharing your travels. You ride like I do. It is winter in the northern hemisphere, snow and ice are keeping me off of my PR7. What tires are you running?
Loch to Nyora is the only part of the trail I haven't ridden yet, but hope to do it this Sunday. Loch to Korumburra is a bit of a climb if you're not ready for it, but great on the way back. loads of good places to visit on the rest of the trail, and great riding all the way.
Yeah it is quite picturesque. I want to get to Bena next ride and then trying Korrumburra after that as the fitness allows. What sort of bike do U ride Alan?
For rail trails, mostly a Giant “Yukon” mountain bike. However, on Sunday I’ll be riding my recumbent trike (Greenspeed GT20rs). We’ll be starting from Korrumburra and returning there for lunch, so we have the uphill section to look forward to, but none of it is hard.@@oafadv
@@alancampbell1161 Nice the recumbent trike would be a bit nicer to the bottom I would think 😉
Have got back in to the MTB myself...great fun and the Honda's starting to collect dust 👍
Yeah it helps a lot with when U do get back on the bike you tend not to wear out as much but it's great way to clear the lungs and head. Thanks for watching Regards Steve
Can't beat a decent paper map..great trip 👍
Bloody ripper of a trip mate, thanks for sharing .
Hola, qué edad tienes?

Nice one mate, thanks for sharing 👍🏼 I just returned from a solo trip out that way… 7000k’s over 13 days, lots of closed roads, got rained out at Flinders Ranges… Good times 😬
7000 KMs that's impressive. What bike do U ride?
One of your best videos yet Steve. Keep them coming👍
Is that the same engine they used in the swm adventure bike?
Yeah the engine is a Husqvarna engine from the era when BMW owned them. SWM have since bought the factory and rights to produce this engine

I suggest tossing some hip pads in there for added control.
Yeah pretty new to sport so any advice appreciated. Trying to execute a barrel roll ATM but no luck. Hip pads would definitely help Thanks. P.S Do dagger make hip pads
@@dirtbikeadv Yes they do. I got their hip pad kit and had to pad them out a lot to fit by bottom. I also got the dagger back band to make it easier to roll. Not an easy boat to roll, but it's doable. Enjoy!
Great adventure and quality camera work, love the AJP 👍own one myself
Thanks. Yeah wasn't a hell of a lot to see or very good camp spots so ended up covering a lot of ground. Ajp does it easy, such a great bike.
I note Hema maps loaded onto your navigation system - what is it loaded onto? iPad?
Hi Chris, it's just a basic Isus tablet that comes with the bike. I loaded the Hema maps into it Thanks for watching Regards Steve
Obviously you don't ride around station country much...nobody rides a bike at dusk in the bush and you certainly don't ride past stock especially sheep with lambs at the speed you do.
What tow rack are you using i, looking for similar to carry my Africa twin. Awesome videos mate.
I think is made by 3D Moto. I bought it from the adventure on store here in Australia Regards Steve
