Birth Control Blues - Vicky (Vikky) Taylor - c. 1965 at the Mousehole.
Переглядів 478Рік тому
A Dylan-influenced (verging on parody) talking blues and remarkable bit of saucy wit and genuine advocacy. From a tape of unknown provenance, probably recorded in Pat and Bernie Fiedler's Mousehole (106 Yorkville) in 1965. Vicky (sometimes Vikky or Vikki) Taylor was born in 1944 in London, Ontario. She moved to Toronto in 1964 to be a folksinger and became friends with Joni Anderson, also recen...

Klaas Van Graft was one of Toronto's original folk singers, beginning in 1957 at La Coterie, 1958 at the Concerto Cafe and then extensively as a solo artist and with the Chanteclairs. In his later years he would sit in with Fraser/Daley at their long-running Wednesday residency, getting up to sing songs from his vast repertoire. These recordings, captured by Gerry Gorman, are a sample of some o...

Bobby Kris and the Imperials - She Belongs To Me

This rare Canadian single was the followup to Bobby Kris and the Imperials' version of "Walk On By," which reached #8 on the national RPM chart in early 1966. As Bob Burrows (AKA Bobby Kris) remembers, "To call this release a flash in the pan would be an understatement. When it first came out it was listed on the CHUM chart as the pick of the week - the "song to watch" as it was about to appare...

How is it even possible that a song such as this can touch the very soul of an 8 year old kid in 1969? But it did indeed happen.

Met Vikki in the summer of 1965 at the Owaissa Lodge just East of Orillia. I went and talked to her on her break and later on the weekend they had an open stage during breaks. I got up and played "Whiskey In the Jar" in my newly learned travis picking style. She then invited me to come to the Hoot Owl Coffee House where she had an apt (number 7} and told me I was better than a lot of performers in the village. I often wondered where I would be if I took her up on the invite. Thank you Mike for posting this, and I did learn that Talking Blues as well.

Disco happened and the culture changed so quickly. It was prompted by the Kent State killings. The peace movement stumbled a long, but when an American governor appeals to an American president to send in armed and inexperienced American National Guardsmen to shoot and kill American students for demonstrating. Yeah, there wr=ere a few rowdy protestors, but the response to shoot live bullets, not rubber or plastic, scared the crap out of everyone. Everyone realized that Nixon was quite prepared to kill the peace movement. By the late 70s, rock went corporate and it's been MIA ever since.

So nice to find an actual recording of her. I was just re-reading shakey - that book is just so full of rare stories - well got to the part about the "guck" and how generous Vicky was to other songwriters connecting them with gigs and giving them a floor to sleep on. Her talent shines in this recording - the poetic narrative style is as exceptional as her phrasing and comic timing in a really fast pace - really hard to perform something like this live - only really creative people in flow can pull this off. Thanks to Tom and you Mike for making this open to everyone : ) - Mario

@mikedaley1968 - so true - I've co-written songs with a guy that grew up in Winnipeg and played when Neil did. His stories of Neil are so funny - how passionate Neil was and how he'd walk around with his amp and guitar - Neil was possessed - he just had to make it and nothing was going to stop him. For every Neil there are hundreds of equally gifted song makers that just don't want to be a "star" for the music industry top ranks - the hubris that are driven by money because money brings power. Vicky had the talent - its clear in this recording - why she didn't get her due has more with her not wanting those kinds of dues. She was brave - creating art for the art of it with no other expectations - it wasn't a product to her - it was her expressing real emotions from dread to joy - we sometimes forget music is an expressive art form - it has nothing to do with logic or profits or sales - it has everything to do with feelings and all exceptional songwriters express feelings honestly and sincerely - we can "feel" them in the songs and then we feel less alone - less isolated - thaen we feel more connected as humans - one species on one planet. Thanks again to all that had a hand in putting this video up - good work!
