Farol de Aveiro (74 / @laruta181 )
Of course I am much too early. I make another photo with Turtle in front of the lighthouse and then circle around to find a good spot to park her. Preferably visible from the lighthouse, fun to be able to see her from above. I make a photo from above with her on it later. The air looks much cleaner today, so I am hoping for a good visibility. I have more than half an hour, so I get down on the floor, next to the beautiful stone welcome mat. Waiting for the door to open…
A little before two I hear someone turning the keys on the other side. A man in uniform stands in the door opening and looks around. I say a happy “boa tarde” and he looks down on me. He seems surprised. I get up and telll him how happy I am and that I have been waiting for two days just to be able to visit this lighthouse. He acts a bit grumpy and says it’s not 2 pm yet. He asks what I expect from the visit to his lighthouse. I smile at him and try to find out if he really has a bad temper or is just pulling an act. I am nearly sure it’s the second. His eyes just look too friendly. Other visitors are arriving. A few Portuguese and a German couple.
The lighthouse keeper tells us he is the most senior in rank, the chief in command, and that he is welcoming us personally because most of his men are on holidays. The Germans don’t have a clue what is being said, so I try to translate whenever it’s possible. Our “guide” shows us the photo with all the lighthouse keepers responsible for this lighthouse at the moment. It must be an important thing to be on that photo. The same happened at the lighthouse of Montedor. Lighthouse keepers are part of the Defence department, so they receive a military training. I guess being included in the photo must be part of an installation ritual. I know the military organisation in the Netherlands is very hierarchical and full of traditions and rituals. This introduction gives the strong impression it is no different in Portugal. Lighthouse keepers are responsible for the complete building, they do all the maintenance themselves. They receive a technical training but they are also painters, carpenters and cleaners… 5 lighthouse keepers and their families live here in the building.
Farol de Barra (1893) is the tallest lighthouse in Portugal. It is 62 metres high and 66 metres above sea level, being the second highest in the Iberian Peninsula only one metre below that of Chipiona in Cadiz. I start climbing the snail-shaped steps, 288 in total. In 1958 an elevator was installed in the tower. I understand for the staff it’s a real game changer, but as a visitor I wouldn’t want to miss the experience of climbing it myself. Some of the steps have a small sign with the number counting the steps. Saves a lot of concentration effort. I am too excited to count anyway…
After the main stone stairs a narrow metal ladder follows that brings us to the room where the lamp itself is. It is shining like gold. Another lighthouse keeper, according to the chief the most junior one, is ready to tell us all about it. And only a few minutes later a huge surprise suddenly comes in: Maria and Olli sneak into the lighthouse chamber. They were in the neighbourhood and they knew I would be here… they wanted to surprise me. And since they are lighthouse-freaks too, they are interested too of course. It is so nice to see them again!!!
The officer opens the fresnel lamp for us, to show the two bulbs inside. If one fails, the other will automatically take its place. He doesn’t touch anything with his hands, always a piece of fine cloth to protect the glass and copper from finger prints… he tells about the code of this light: 4 strikes every 13 seconds. Under the lamp is a clock mechanism that used to regulate the code. The old clock mechanism needed to be rewinded every 4 hours. It can still be used. Every single part is still being maintained and in top condition. The fresnel lamp has some additions for the light to be directed to the skies too. It is used to guide airplanes. The importance of nearby airport has lowered, and so has the air function of this lighthouse.
From above the views are stunning. We are not allowed to go out to the balcony. I don’t understand why, probably something with safety. It doesn’t matter, what a perfect visit!!! It’s quite hot upstairs. The other people want to leave. I chat a little with the officer and then descend the stairs too. The chief in command is waiting for me, he wants to stamp my Ruta 181 booklet. It is my first stamp. Olli makes some pictures of us both.
Olli, Maria and I make a silly selfie with the lighthouse and then have an ice cream and coffee. It really was a super surprise to see them in the lighthouse. They will be staying here in Barra. Maria has to work. I am ready to leave this place… I am going to the festival. They might come later. What a day!!!

Witnessing a traditional way of fishing
Переглядів 55821 день тому
I spent the night on the beach of Costa de Lavos. In the morning I see some movement on the beach. A tractor is doing something near a fishing boat. I get closer and ask one of the guys what’s going on. They are going to pull the nets in. I am excited, I want to see this. It’s a kind of conic bag of nets that has been positioned in the sea with a boat. Two tractors are pulling in the xavaga, as...

I start driving towards one of the highest lighthouses of Portugal. This afternoon, Wednesday, it is scheduled to be open. I am so looking forward to climb its 213 spiral staircase steps. It’s not far, only about 20 km. I want to drive as close to the coast as possible and where possible get a glimpse of the border of the sea. I have quick photo stops at Praia de Mindelo, Praia de Vila Chã and ...

I drive to Praia da Ramalha to get a sensation of this part of the coastline. I park Turtle in a line of relatively new vans with young people. It’s a group of German and Swiss surfers. They are visibly enjoying vanlife. One of them admires Turtle. I ask him to look after her while I go for a hike. It’s an seemingly endless white beach. After about 5 km I pass and old deserted windmill and arri...
Jordan, Day 8: Wadi Rum, day 2

Calm wake-up. Our guide brings back the South Korean girls to Wadi Rum Village. Today it will be only Marijke and me with Nowas. We start our trip with a check on the camels of his family. I get to know Dana, a very sweet female camel. I always hated #camels for their smell and their unfriendly behavior. Happy to experience it does not have to be true…. Nowas brings us to a canyon to walk throu...

After breakfast in our hotel we drive to the Petra visitor center for an ATM. Wadi Rum has no possibilities to collect cash. After a little stress about a machine that didn’t work as expected, we start our two hours drive. The scenery is amazing, certainly in the light of the sunrise. We check-in at Wadi Rum’s visitor’s center. The entry of the protected area is included in the Jordan pass. The...
Jordan Day 6: Petra, back entrance

There are two ways to enter Petra. Through the main entrance, as we did yesterday, and through the back entrance. Today we attempt the second one. We park the car near the visitors centre of Petra. A (taxi) guy offers us a ride to little Petra (where we want to go) and lowers his price from 10 Jr pp to 10 Jr total. We accept and on the way he stops at a beautiful viewpoint and shows us a Bedoui...

We have breakfast in a completely empty hotel restaurant and walk to the entrance of Petra. Nobody on the streets, only some shop owners. At the entrance we walk straight to the ticket office to get our ticket with our Jordan pass. No waiting line. We drink a cappuccino (the most expensive ever) and start our walk into Petra through the southern entrance. The city of Petra was established as a ...

We decide to go back to the north to visit a castle we had no time for on our way down to Dana. It is about 100 km to Al Karak, where Kerak castle is situated. We drive right to the entrance of the castle and park the car in front of a café. I imagine how this place would be full of tourists. I wonder how far we would have to walk to the entrance then… we order a cup of Turkish coffee (strong w...

I am camping right under the lighthouse, but I can’t see it from here. It’s hidden behind the pines. I watched it from a distance, shining it’s light at night. And I watched it in the morning light too. Now I am going to visit it from the inside. First I move Turtle to a place higher up, visible from the lighthouse. I make a picture of Turtle and the lighthouse together and then walk back. It i...

Jordan Day 3, Hiking Dana reserve

Today is hiking day. The night was cold, we leave at 09:30 when the sun is starting to heat everything up. We wanted to walk Wadi Dana, but because of a storm in December it is not allowed to hike there now. So yesterday we booked the Al Barrah trail. It is a full day’s hike. Our guide is Sale, an older man in a camouflage suit. He does not speak English but is very friendly. We receive a lunch...

Leaving Bordeaux my first objective is to drive to the next lighthouse, phare du Cap Ferret. I don’t count on a lack of petrol stations along the way and the massive head-wind, so I have to make a short detour to Andernos-les-Bains to fill up. Since I am here anyway I visite the charming oyster harbour - a tip from Tony’s friend. It’s time for lunch anyway so I order shrimps and whelks with an ...

Early wake-up. We have a long day ahead of us. The first stop: mount Nebo. Mount Nebo is mentioned in the Bible as the place where Moses was granted a view of the Promised Land before his death.
