    A child who is gluten free due to possibly damaging her small intestine by eating her hair. The hair was surgically removed. When she does get glutened she is “out of it” overwhelming sleepy hard to wake and throwing up. This is giving me pause…

    I’m facing a stage in my PEI that I didn’t realize existed, and Mary nails it. When first diagnosed Creon was a godsend! I could resume my life and not have to be continually cleaning up spills on the path to the bathroom. But then, over some years, I reduced the dose as tolerated (she pointed out this poor advice in this session) until I realized I didn’t actually need it unless I was going out to eat a high fat meal. I changed my diet, in other words. And now, years later, we’ve realized that I’m malnourished and vitamin-deficient. Back on Creon and paying much more attention to diet, and I’ve stopped losing weight. Thank-you Mary and Sheffield!

    Gluten (particularly gliadin, a gluten peptide) essentially acts as a neurotoxin. It's pure poison for the brain. I didn't have any intestinal problems at all, but I struggled with severe brain fog, memory issues, depression with anhedonia and lack of motivation, drowsiness, fatigue, light sensitivity and a nagging occipital pain that was resistant to all types of painkillers including opioids. I slept 14 hours a day and could barely get out of bed. I started experimenting on myself with different medications in desperate search of relief. Antidepressants like bupropion and amisulpride have given me some help with motivation by increasing dopamine and norepinephrine and I have been able to get rid of nape pain thanks to acetazolamide which lowers cerebrospinal fluid pressure. But no one was 100% effective, it was like taking a daily dose of poison with one hand while trying different antidotes with the other one without knowing which poison it was. I was on the verge of getting some irreversible MAOI, the most powerful antidepressant medications and wanted also try high doses of IV steroids (dexamethasone) when the turning point was the appearance of persistent dyshidrotic eczema which made me suspect some type of food intolerance/allergy. I used a drastic method: fasting! Only water and electrolytes for 3 days. Eczema gone! But not only that! I felt less tired with less need for sleep and more energy! You wouldn't think so for someone who hasn't eaten for 3 days! It was clear that the poison was in the food and it didn't take long to figure out that it was gluten! Following a strict gluten free diet all symptoms improved day after day

    So you suggest that a antigliadin-antibody testing should be done to every new case of ataxia that pops up? Or for that matter that a MR spectroscopy should be a part of the initial diagnostic workup?

    Thank you for highlighting this area. There are few doctors that really understand the impact of EPI. Dr. Freedman is another good one to check for those suffering. He has an in depth article on Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency written with Dr. Struyvenberg that anyone with EPI should read. Another really helpful resource was the book Primal Pancreas.

    It’s important to know that some people also cross-react with gluten from soy, corn, dairy and yeast. Eliminating those triggers may help resolve lingering symptoms.

      I follow the GF diet, I am okay with corn and dairy in small amounts as a "sometimes food" yeast not so much. NO symptoms, celiac and no seizures. Physicians need to know this stuff! I am better at 67 than I was at 27!

    Dairy should be avoided too. Casein can mimic gluten. The casein protein is also very structurally similar to gluten, so the same molecular mimicry that triggers an attack when you eat gluten can also occur when you eat casein from dairy, initiating an autoimmune response. In fact, roughly 50% of those with gluten intolerance are casein intolerant as well.

      If you can't get tested, try going completely gluten free. But remember, you have to be on gluten for at least six weeks (I think, check with a doctor) for the tests to work. It can get better, but it takes a long time. I don't think it ever goes away completely. But if you have what he is talking about, staying on gluten will make you worse.

    I think FC is a great metric to test for colon cancer, i don't know why that's not talked more

    • @zakandaaronandaaran
      @zakandaaronandaaran 2 місяці тому

      FC has nothing to do with testing for colon cancer, it is used to test for possible inflammation in the GI tract and try to ascertain whether the patient is encountering possible IBS / IBD / inflammation from bacteria, virus , diet etc . The most accurate stool test for colon cancer is the quantitative fecal immunochemical test for hemoglobin (FIT) which tests if you have blood in your stool in trace amounts. The most accurate tests for cancer are the endoscopy/colonoscopy procedures.

    Wonderful presentation. It should be an actual Ted Talk! I've just been diagnosed with CD (coeliac disease), and have been background reading. I've had migraines for the last 10 years (chronic/daily for the last 5 years). These might be connected to my CD, so I will discuss this with my gastroenterologist. It seems that neurological complications from gluten sensitivity are seriously under recognised, and Prof Sanders and his colleagues at SIGReD (Sheffield Institute for Gluten-related Disorders) are doing valuable work in this field.

    I have had digestive and other issues all through my life. I was finally diagnosed with coeliac disease when I was 62 having had to retire from work at 60 through ill health. I only found out what the likely problem was when I got on to a diagnostic program and presented myself as a professional. Though I had been presenting at my GP practice for years with intestinal pain all I ever got from them was the description of what I was telling them in that they said you have Irritable bowel syndrome. The diagnostic program gave me two possibilities Coeliac disease which I had never heard of and could not pronounce properly and Helicobacter Pylori which I knew about. When I went to the GP with these results and a list of my symptoms She had a look of consternation but said I would have to eat six slices of bread a day before I was tested by gastroenterology. There was no way that I could eat that much of anything by this stage. I was seen very quickly due to the high serial count and the registrar relayed to researchers that I had evidence of Coeliac disease with no villi, completely flat and possible evidence of Helicobactor, ulceration. I am so glad that I refused sedation and heard this. I have been called a hypochondriac and dismissed so often I had begun to doubt my sanity at times. I believe our GPs are so inadequately trained to spot signs of This and other diseases that a diagnostic program would be of enormous benefit to GPs and patients alike preventing years of problems and pain and aiding much better health form many people. Thank you to all the Gastroenterology staff at the Hallamshire under David Sunders for your work and thank you team and Professor Hadjivassilou for this very informative lecture.

      Yes, the carnivore diet should be tried for 30 days by anyone in poor health. Then add 1 food back at a time in order to see what you’re sensitive to. I had a severe gluten allergy and felt my body deteriorating. Having a leaky gut caused me to have a severe autoimmune response where my body was attacking itself. My brain and gut were all affected. Cut out gluten and now just waiting for my health to improve. Healing the gut is key to preventing a severe reaction to gluten.

    • @adyarym
      @adyarym Рік тому

      Do not use Gluten Free * prepared commercial food, snacks etc… Some of their ingredients could end being as irritative as the gluten itself for our already sensitive gut. Eat fresh prepared food, as organic, non gm, antibiotic and hormone free as possible. Not related but important: drink distilled or ( preferably AND ) deep aquifers water. Metals can not float in the vapors of distlled water. Some deep aquifers are still clean too. 🚰 and bottled waters in some countries are carrying a metal that we do not want inside of us. Famous now because it is related to the “ modern preventive” You now… 💪.
