Ecocentric Homestead, a four acre property on the northeast coast of the Island of Newfoundland, Canada.
A true sustainable food forest is a garden disguised forest and blends with the local ecosystem.
While I build my food forest here, I report on techniques, skills and information as I research and implement them my self.
Techniques for growing your own food and obtaining energy for your homestead.
Skills in tool maintenance and food preparation.
Information on how to analyze your resources and wild foraging.
My area is a very unique place with respect to climate. It is considered a "Boreal" Rain forest Biome. We have a winter of plant hardiness zone 5a and a summer of plant hardiness zone 3, with lots of wind, rain and cloud.
So hit that subscribe button to follow along as I show we can homestead comfortably in, what most people call, harsh climate.

Hey that little “grape snippet thingy” seems pretty effective !! What’d ya’ say that’s called? Garden looks great, Jotham ! Keep it up.

It was the first time I had success with my grapes! Now my raspberries and strawberries are going crazy with an early Fall harvest!! Love your khol rabi. I struggle with mines!
@RemsFamily there are some plants that need to get settled in before they'll produce a lot. Raspberries and grapes are in that list.
Great batch of beans there!
It definitely was hard to keep up with watering this summer. I started off being diligent but gave up.
Good day for a future supper & a seed harvest. I enjoy the beauty in the color/patterns of different varieties. Ying yang & soldier beens are my favorite.😊😊
Dont allow so many pests. Check out info on Brix content of plants (interesting info about sugar content of sugars in plants & affects on insects). 😊
What is the grape? Nice tour.
@@fourdayhomestead2839 the one by the fence is valiant. The other one was bought before I was keeping records.
That definitely looks like a elderberry. And about the sea buckthorn even if you have mowed over them that will only cut them off they will be alive. And how to tell if it's seabuckthorn runner is they are a woody stalk really from the start. Great video 😊
Great informative tour. I love bringing the harvests in but don't like that it's all ending 😢
I struggle with my apple trees because the weeds and grass grows faster than the tree! I need to get a temporary fix to give my trees a chance! Great video my friend!
@@RemsFamily yes. It seems the grass needs to be kept away from them until they are 2 or 3 feet tall.
@@ecocentrichomestead6783 indeed
It's morning here so good morning 😊
Your going to have a good harvest again this year. What are you thinking about doing with rose hips?
Looks great 😍
Thanks for sharing 😊
Yes, I have found wire worm bad this year. Such a pain. Definitely not from my veseys seed potatoes though. Your bed looks great now.
Question: I'm looking into a nitrogen fixer tree that don't have thorns. As I age, managing thorns would be a problem.
Siberian Pea Shrub and there is a thorn less honey locust.
@@ecocentrichomestead6783 awesome! Thanks!
Nice update. Impressive growth in the woodland.😊
Some of those trees will start producing like crazy in a few years!
Your garden is looking great. Nice onion harvest
Thank you for the great video! Everything is looking great. Especially the peanut butter cookie - you put a lot of work into making them. The onions have turned out well this year. The turnips look delicious!
It's 86°f here in northern wisc. Humid. Planning a winter harvest (tall greenhouse with 2nd hoop protected beds with no heat). Plants & seeds ready to go in. 😊
Thanks for the tour! Finally enough time to start catching up with YT friends. Many years ago we grew lilies for florists. Live the blooms but most scents are overpowering. Take care.
Looking great. It's been such a dry year! My random watering doesn't help a bit. I'll be lucky if I get 2 squash this year. Very few female flowers.
Are grapes hard to propagate? I found a huge section in the woods where an old homestead was (1780's were the 1st settlers there).
Have you started any of your canning yet this year ? 😊 Thanks for sharing ☺️
@b.savage8953 pickles. I've made a case of dill pickles. Going to make a case of sweet pickles today.
@@ecocentrichomestead6783 enjoy ☺️
Nice update. Thanks for sharing.
The design of your compost bin sides are interesting. I hope to get dozens of them built to line the garden side of my driveway (a useable snow break).
Wow! That was a great tour! A little long but interesting! My first time watching you. Are you Canadian? Couldn’t quite get the accent or the garden zone. Seems like you’re further north than me. We’re in zone 6B or 7 but with the global warming and much earlier warming in the spring. Those cukes look like watermelons! The first time i grew them I missed one and it literally scared me when I saw how big it was! I still used it but the seeds get so big at that stage, they’re a bit tough!
It's a newfoundland Accent. I'm sitting just north of the 49th parallel. Zone 5b. The last 5 years, though, might show different.
Things are looking great. Your squash plants are so much larger than any of mine.
Looks great 👍 We're in a heatwave here with no end in sight until next week and I'm dreading watering my plants 😂 Stay cool 👍
Such a nice and beautiful garden, thanks for sharing your harvest
Nice job on the nettles and nice new gloves
Looks great 👍😊
Raspberries look great.
This year rutabega not doing as good, but I'll replant for early/mid winter harvest. I don't wax them, but they store well.
Japanese beetles have *DEVASTATED* my raspberries this year. Traps only attract *EVEN MORE!!* Time for chemical warfare, being careful not to hit the pollinators. Best wishes to you!!
Nice harvest. Small batch picking & freezing on a tray (before bagging up) works great for just me using them.
Nice looking berries
Those national picking cucumber are huge.
Hope tje moose stays away for you. Thats a pretty big pest! 😮 Your ground cherries will take off and grow big. Tjey start slow i found. That grapevine is insane. I must see if there's a spot i could try a vine. What variety is that
That grape vine I planted before I was taking records, so I don't know the variety. However, it was bought at Canadian Tire. I wonder if beside your in ground potato patch would be a good place to plant one.
Does look beautiful 😊 I pickled some peppers and am looking forward to those . What a nice breeze , we don't hardly ever get a breeze here . Thanks for sharing 😊
Is there enough time for winter squash for your area? I put in odd plants in late, but plan on finishing the growing out under cover if needed.
In my experience, If the plants are growing well by late july, they will flower in the heat of mid summer. I need to make sure any female flowers are pollinated in that two week window. If successful, a mature squash is highly possible.
Nice tour. Such a variety.
I have the same 'mow or plant' problem around my house. I'm choosing to do nursery beds for plants, bushes & cuttings for field transplants. I'll see & tend to them more often that way. No more forgotten elderberries 😊
@@fourdayhomestead2839 good idea. I was thinking of doing that with the raised bed.
@@ecocentrichomestead6783 mine will have to be a raised bed also, to keep the Burdock out. I cut them down to the base & filled the hollow stems with concentrated vinegar, (hope of killing the roots).
Some good tips. I'm an experienced gardener /market farmer, but this old dog has been learning new tricks. Thanks for sharing😊
Looks so nice 😊 thanks for sharing 👍
First!
That bird was funny! I love California poppy and had no idea it was edible. My 3rd year trying to grow cucamelon and not sure if mice or slugs but never a plant left.
You are a hard worker!
My lettuce failed (too cool & wet). I'll replant a salad mix & add some Tuscan kale. More carrots & fall potatoes. Cole crops are ok, but slow start.
early mild weather messes with us and the plants. almost warm enough to grow, but not quite.
Over all the beds look good. There's time to replant. Onions look wonderful.
Yeah, there's short time maturing plants and those that can be harvested without being fully grown. So just keep planting and watering!
