    Seems like this thing is a sickle bar mower on a stick, which is something that uniquely matches my property size - too small to need a sickle bar mower on my tractor, but too large for the string trimmer or bush blade. Can this cut through saplings and first or second year tree suckers? One-two finger thickness stuff. I sure like the various attachments they make for the split-shaft power unit. I've got the 36v and love it.

    • @itsumonihon
      @itsumonihon Місяць тому

      So I ended up getting one of these and another in a half length version and answered my own question: Yes, it will cut saplings up to about an inch thick. What a lifesaver, this is very easy to use compared to a circular brush blade in my application. I imagine it'll really use up batteries on an 18v, it does decent on my 36v and I bet the 40v version is the best of them all with this tool. Do yourself a favor and buy the harness, it makes it much easier to cut down slopes and weird angles.

      I really don't need the 40 volt here. The 40 volt is over kill and a waste of $$. Yep I may need to carry a couple of power packs with me depending on the job. Keep in mind that you don't have the unit running all the time like a gas powered unit. The most important thing your not mixing gas and oil and don't have that noise. Please do let me know how it works and I'm glad the video gave you some ideas .

    There are people out there that will rewind that motor for you.

  • @momatmach1
    @momatmach1 Місяць тому

    You never know it could be a 50? With no numbers how can you tell,it certainly needs to be cleaned first, the beauty of the early motors is that given the correct gauge wire, available still I believe, you can rewind the armature reasonably easily, if the armature is currently scrap it’s at least worth a go, main thing is you have fun doing it. But I agree first it needs to be cleaned !

    • @lionelmaxltd
      @lionelmaxltd Місяць тому

      Your correct, it maybe a 50 but really has all indications of being a 38. At this is my wish. The rewinding an armature is a thing that is not in the works for me. possibly in another 10 years or so. I have way to many projects going on now, one is redoing my layout and adding standard gauge loop. this alone will be a real undertaking alone. Are you experienced in the rewinding of the armatures?

    • @momatmach1
      @momatmach1 Місяць тому

      @@lionelmaxltd hi, yes I’ve had a go at a couple, first was an Ives armature, I just unwound the old wire, counted the number of turns and rewound by hand, the armature is still good, there is a lot written about calculations etc, but if you get the correct gauge wire and match the turns it works, I also rebuilt an Ives flat commutator using copper sheet, I figured if something is scrap anyway why not have a go? I enjoy your videos and good luck with the models. Tim

  • @momatmach1
    @momatmach1 Місяць тому

    The logical thing is clean them all first to see what paint you actually have? Given the condition of the caboose making a coal train one seems a good idea, it’s not a rare item so you aren’t ruining anything, personally I don’t like to break cars for spares but as a last resort if it keeps better ones running it needs to be done. Looking forward to seeing what you do.

    • @lionelmaxltd
      @lionelmaxltd Місяць тому

      Another very good idea and opinion, I do agree with keeping them as is and even running them after cleaning the axles and wheels. I just put wheels and axles in my rock tumbler for a day or two. I do say the cars have some great character. I really don't like pulling them apart. Just went out and bought a new sandblaster cabinet for these larger projects.... we will need hold on and see what other suggestions come up. thanks for the ideas

  • @rogerlee3941

    Hi Tom, I really enjoy your channel! There comes a time when an antique item goes beyond the "patina" or "aged" phase and becomes just ugly and worn out. Only the owner can make that decision for himself and his collection. I've been a Lionel o-gauge collector for many years and I occasionally have restored an item or two because to me it makes the hobby and my collection more enjoyable and and much more desirable. I say, GO FOR IT!

    • @lionelmaxltd
      @lionelmaxltd Місяць тому

      Sounds like you have a short or grounded power wire. This could be an old wire that the plastic covering has dried and fell off. or this may be a wire that rubbed the coating off. You shouldn't plug it in till you have the transformer serviced.

    I also run my 392 with a 384 tender, problem I find is the tender is worth more than the engine, also original 392s are pretty rare this side of the Atlantic, a wheel needing to be replaced is a small job I guess, all the ones I’ve found the casting has warped or broken and you’re back into repro territory, look forward to seeing this one on the rails again.

    • @lionelmaxltd
      @lionelmaxltd 2 місяці тому

      Yes the tenders do run a bit more than the steamers. The castings were made from that bad materials and we have the same problems here in the US. I'm glad this one was some what reasonable. I do have original replacement wheels and not hard to job to do. I'll be pulling all the wheels and cleaning them in a rock tumbler. so they all will have the same look. the other task is going to be getting the whistle working. Good to hear from Ya
