Cold and rainy has been a recurring theme lately. But I'm glad to be spending this evening with your voice flowing into my head, Jenna. Relaxation is an understatement. I saw The Substance. Coralie Fargeat's style in structuring the story was something I appreciated a lot: you empathize with Elisabeth Sparkle (Demi Moore) and it's hard to disagree with her decisions even when they spiral into the inevitable trainwreck. Because honestly, what would you do if granted that kind of power? The ideas are threaded and bookended with immense skill. I saw Wicked at the start of the weekend. After 21 years of Hollywood trying to develop it to screen from the Broadway version, our expectations may have risen too high. But it's worthwhile for three reasons. 1. Ariana Grande is the ultimate Glinda! 2. Visually this is the ultimate Oz! 3. The ending, and especially "Defying Gravity", is cinematic perfection! (Much like Denis Villeneuve with Dune, this was a genius decision by Jon M. Chu to bite off only what was chewable on each round.) I spent 2 years as a professional film critic, so the formal side of finding things to enjoy is what I do for my friend circle. It also won't be long before the organized critic groups each name their Best Film of 2024. (Look for the New York Critics' Circle decision on December 2nd.) As for a favorite in general, my mood today leaves me at a tie between Almost Famous (2000) or The Iron Giant (1999). Neither of which made a profit at the box office; they had to earn their audience through word-of-mouth which in turn wins my respect much more.

"Devs" on Hulu is a good watch!
