Soft Plastic Basics, you need to know
All excellent points. I also carry a small air horn for alerting boat traffic and making emergency signals.
😮 that would work
Could you tell me if there is any brass inserts or fittings in between the Tackle pod area and the new oval hatch as I would like to fit a Railblaza Tracport 3? Cheers Graeme
Graeme, there are no brass inserts in that area, on my 400 I’ve bolted the trackport to the top of my tacklepod, I’ve seen others put starports infront of their feet’s and plug a trackport in. This option is probably the strongest but it’s a long reach compared to having the placement on the tacklepod lid.
@@yakfishfun8441 Excellent, thanks for the info
Does the new 400 come with the lid with chopping board or is the Tackle pod the only option?
It comes with the lid and chopping board, the tackle pod is an additional extra 👍
@@yakfishfun8441 Thanks again Laurie
That stirrup is a bloody good idea. I'll make one this weekend, i reckon.
Did you say that was a slow day, Laurie? 😮 Were you using a drogue in those windy conditions? I didn't spot one. If you haven't included tips on using a drogue before in your videos, could you do so one day when you've got your drogue out and doing some filming? That would be really helpful.
Mate, I had a drogue with me but the speed of the drift meant it wasn’t required due to the wind against tide. Awesome point, I’ll include a demo in my next vid, is there anything else you want covered?
I can't think of anything else at the moment. I've just bought a drogue, so any guidance on how to make the best use of it would be great. Cheers Laurie.
I've got the old 400, I'm definately going to upgrade to the new model when they get to the UK
That’s awesome, there seems to be quite a few Viking kayaks in the UK 😎
Just ordered mine today from Cornwall Canoes. They are already heading to the UK and should arrive by end of September. There is still some to buy on the ship
Loving the new settings shots for the lead up to the trip. Makes you feel more engaged in what it takes to get out for a fish. Fingers crossed the season starts to pick up with earnest! Great vid.
Cheers Andy, not my usual paddle out in the dark trick 😂
Watching the Vid got me amped for a Corro fish
Twist my arm and let’s go 🤣
Great vid. Any chance I could purchase one of those fish finder covers?
I’ve got a few made up, either message me on messenger ( Laurie Pottinger) or you can email lauriepottinger@icloud.com 👍
Water water everywhere, But not a drop to drink
😂🤣😂 true
Good video - looked a bit rugged out there. Roll on summer.
Judging on the number of fishos on the water, there must be a heap waiting for summer 👍
Good review appreciated your honesty, I absolutely love my gt ,have own the 400 in the past , great kayak. love the gt Storage and compact factor which is important to me and the stability factor, I find it definitely not slow, fast Enough , certainly turns great, I think it's perfect for the inshore fishing, and i think it's underrated as well
They’re definitely loved by a lot of guys and I really enjoyed my earlier kayak fishing from mine. You’ve nailed a great point, if you have limited storage space it’s a great option 👍
Another epic adventure. Love that location, but I’ve struggled to catch anything worthwhile.
It definitely doesn’t fish as good as it looks, can be very tough .
Beautiful coastline. I’ve almost forgotten what snapper tastes like 😂.
Slightly better than frozen fish fingers 🤣
Another excellent piece lozza. Thanks for sharing your experience and knowledge. You’ve made so many valid points, this video is a great reminder to stay vigilant at all times.
An excellent safety video. There is an extra way to help get back onto kayak which l learnt when l was using narrow sit in kayaks. It involves tying an inflatable paddle bag to one of the blades. When you inflate it, push the other end if paddle under grab ropes or under the straps behind the seat. You then pull yourself into the kayak easily as the float prevents kayak rolling down as you pull yourself onto the seat position. This manoeuvre plus all the others you mentioned are demonstrated in a video by "Paddle Guy". To see it type "How to get back on your SOT kayak with Paddle Guy" on Google search. As he says, you need to practice these recoveries to make sure you become confident and skilled in them.
Excellent vid mate. Thanks for this. I've learned fitness and common sense also plays a big part in being safe out on the kayak. Few years ago I took my kayak out to a small rocky reef off tarakena bay wellington. Only approx 200m offshore, but on my way back in a strong norwester developed and geez it was hardwork to get back. Each time I stopped for a break I was blown back 30-50m. Bloody lucky. Many lessons learned that day. Greater appreciation for the kayak, my limits and the ocean.
Winny, I think we’ve all done that, especially in our early days of yak fishing 😬 Have you got any surf vids coming up?
Beautiful spot. All nature
Good overview of safety. My strategy is don't go out in the yak if the wind is over 6kts, it limits my windows, especially this season, but it also reduces the dangers.
Great advice, especially from exposed beaches that lack natural shelter from hills 👍
Great vid Loz, you are definitely correct about fishing with new Yakers, it puts a lot of responsibility on you as the lead.
100% mate, I’ve heard your tow rope doesn’t gather dust 👍
Thanks for the vid and all the life saving tips, Laurie. Regarding the stirrup around the 5:50 mark that you made, what's the orange material around part of the rope, presumably to provide some rigidity to the rope to keep an open loop?
Geoff, it’s spray hose, strong but flexible 👍
Cheers Laurie
Top vid Laurie - very relevant, well presented. I'll review my long-leash on the paddle tomorrow. Thanks for taking the time to make the vid.
I’m picking identifying risk would have been high priority during your career.
Good vid - hope you get lots of views to keep this top of mind. Always prepare for the worst. Conditions can change very quickly and the sea is much stronger than most people are aware.
Well said mate 👍
Great tips Laurie, still learning from ya :) always wondered what you carried in the back seat bag. Thank you for sharing.
Philippa, it’s a great place to put the stuff you hope not to use (first aid kit, toilet paper) 😂
Thanks for this video, its one of the best i have seen very relavant and appreciate you sharing your knowledge.
Awesome, glad you liked it 👍
Some excellent points there.
Cheers Rob 👍
Some great tips there Loz and a good reminder to all of us who sometimes take these things for granted. Before I got my Stealth I got caught out by a bad forecast on a trip that took me 4.5hrs to paddle back about 3km… was close to exhaustion and had no way to communicate my problem. That was a wake up call to alway have a plan for the risks. Thanks for sharing
Andy most of my worst experiences were when I started yak fishing, fortunately we survived to learn from it 👍
what an awesome spot mate!!
😂 luckily it’s a long way from Palmy
@@yakfishfun8441 Bro I was just dreaming today of a Corro Trip
Agree with everything you say. GT has some good features - great stability, low weight, tackle pod, short length makes it easy to transport BUT it's paddling performance is poor especially when weather is against you. Even in calm conditions it is slow. If you are going to add the Bixpy then this may be the Yak for you. Otherwise get the 400 or reload.
Another good vid, Some nice fish.
Cheers Adam 👍
Some nice fish! Awesome looking coastline. How did you enjoy the challenge of only using the one softbait option? Thanks for running through your gear that was helpful.
😂 Taking paddletails away from me was like going into battle with a bow and arrow. Have to say Andy it was a refreshing change but not sure if I could handle a livebait only day 🤔
I note your paddle leash was still attached as you made your run in. I forgot to detach mine about 18 years ago in heavy wave patterns. I was suddenly capsized by a smaller wave in the sets. The paddle leash locked over my left forearm, chest and right shoulder anchoring me upside down to the kayak and also held in by a spray skirt. I was under water for just over one minute and losing consciousness. I recall bringing my legs up then pushing them down violently. Somehow, this snapped the paddle leash and l ejected down to the sea floor to escape. The cardinal rule is, always detach your paddle leash in surf.
Great point, sounds horrific. I’ve designed my own paddle leash, it’s shorter and attaches to the paddle with velcro, making it easy to release 👍
What happened to your latest video I was watching now its gone?
I wasn’t happy with my edit so I’ve uploaded a new version, 7pm tonight 👍
@@yakfishfun8441 fair enough! always keen to keep upto date with your videos! Looking forward to rewatching / finishing the vid!
Good vid, is that off sandy bay ? How heavy is ya main line and leader
Love that spot. If it was me I would have been straight to Lion Rock with a big kahawai in tow! But I think your plan worked out for an awesome winter session with lots of mahi. How are you finding running 3 cameras?
😂 I would have changed my plan if I caught a Kahawai at the first headland. 3 cameras was 😢, I 10’s died, normally I run 4 🤣
Would you mind explaining your soft-baiting rod and reel?
Next vid I’ll cover it for you 👍
Hi. Please try North East of Canada or so. Thousands of miles of coast with no sharks. Canada anyhow. All the luck in this world!
rugby is over now time for some YFF 😎
Great tips, thx Laurie. I've got to start looking for sets and counting waves. Is the magic number always 7 (7 big waves followed by 7 smaller ones) or does it depend upon the interval between waves as well (14 secs in your video)? In other words, is it just coincidental that 7 is half of 14, so there would be 7 big waves followed by 7 smaller ones even if the interval between waves is 10 secs instead of 14 secs?
Geoff the 14 seconds being a multiple of 7 was just a coincidence. Wave sets come in sets of seven with the last few waves being the biggest. Observing is the only way to tell if what you’re watching is a large set. The period between waves is important because it gives you more times to gap it between sets but long period waves have more power. Another key thing to observe at launching is the direction the waves break (left or right) and use that information to angle your return to the beach. Don’t take the straight route 🐢
Thx Laurie. I was good going back in at WC on Sunday following Rex in. 🤣
Did he turtle? 😂
Negative. Rex demonstrated a textbook landing. 😀
Good watch mate thanks !! Tough going but hey that’s fishing keeps us going back for more
Makes me hungrier 😂
Nice one Los!! definitely correct, when you are committed don't stop paddling
Yep many times the first big waves of a set have nailed me coming in 😂
Another great video, Laurie!
Cheers Mike, I need to come up your way for a fish 🤔
Your experience reading & navigating the ocean shines through here. Theory helps, but nothing beats time on the water! Cheers bro.
"Commit, pick the right line and go hard"! Great life advice too bro. Cher
Nga mihi Winny, my mantra has always been work hard, play hard 😂 I’m so close to giving surfing a crack after watching your awesome vids 👍
Great lil vid for sharing your wisdom thanks Loz. Reminds me to stop being a chicken and get out to some spots with swell to open up the fishing options.
Great skill to have but you never get 100% comfortable with it 👍
I've been wearing my wetsuit and catching the waves in. I still usually end up in the water, need to practice going side on as they break.
Mate I’ve paddled once in my wetsuit, the chaffing under my arms was painful. Your yak would be fast in the surf, be way different than my Reload
@@yakfishfun8441 I wear the bottom half of my two piece suit and it's comfy but yea the top would do that
Makes sense, not sure if my old man’s bladder would handle a wetsuit 😬
@@yakfishfun8441 My one has a flap thing for that
Like a boss. Thanks for sharing very helpful I’m absolutely clueless in the surf 👊🏽
Cheers mate, the small waves catch me out because I loose concentration 😂
Always enjoy your vids Laurie, informative and educational. Thanks for posting this up.
Cheers Mike, there would have been more fishing but the fish didn’t read the script 😂
Jaw dropping scenery and video footage. Your videos and commentary are great from an educational perspective too. On the water with fishing buddies, it's not practical to get close enough to learn by watching without getting in the way of your buddy's fishing. Your videos overcome this problem. Cheers Laurie.
Glad you enjoy them 👍
Tough luck Laurie losing that kingy. Did the locking up of your line arise from the way the line was spooled onto your baitcaster or something else?
No that was my fault, at some stage I’d pulled it off the reel and it was under another layer, being hard to fix on the water I pulled around half the line off so I could use it that day. I was meant to run it all out on the farm but forgot 🥲
Tough. 😢 Go the mighty Daiwa Lexa HD! 😊
Great vid Loz, ouch on the line wrap … happens to the best of us! Sorry I didn’t make the comp this year I’m keen to give it a go next time.
Awesome Vid Los, was thinking of you boys over the weekend. I was a bit miffed that i missed the comp this year. Hopefully next year ill join you all again.
Next year boet 👍
Totally could have edited out some of that disgusting f*cking language Loz! Glad you didn’t though 😂
