    You are right about the film romantising heartbreak. You are also right about the fundamental flaw of both the charecters in their innability to directly communicate their needs. In my opinions anyways lel I would like see a film similar to what you described though

      The only thing that confuses me is why she couldn't be happy for him if he was feeling content in his work and life situation. He is a great dad and worked, even if it wasn't a super fancy high paying job...and while he needed to definitely work on his maturity for real communication, he said he was happy being a husband and father, and for her to say he should try to aspire to something else, I just don't think that is fair. It might land him in a soul-sucking job that wouldn't make him happy. I don't think the hustle and grind really is the best way to "be successful" in life.

      @@cannedcatfood you're correct about hustle culture, but I don't think she was looking for that extreme either. I think the beauty of the film is that it is not judgemental on how the characters live. It portrays a reality that we live today and it is sad, depressing and hopeless. It just is as it is. I think it just shows us the rawness of human emotion and the vulnerability of relationships. I think it is an example of what not to do in a relationship. So you're right, there should have been more communication. So, I think the movie's storyline works that way, as a lesson only.

    I also would have liked to see them work it out and see love conquer all. This movie was showing something more real and they weren’t going to give the happy ending because that would be cliche and done already. It’s not often an immature parter suddenly decided to listen and be mature, it’s just not realistic. If he was in therapy fixing himself then yes, maybe and perhaps that could have been a good twist. She seems hard to please and emotionally stand-offish. It’s like she wasn’t going to allow herself to have it good, like dropping out of med school or subconsciously leaving the gate open and more self sabotaging behavior.

      She fell out of love with him. One could argue she was never in love with him. But he was there when she needed someone. And now she feels resentment towards him as if he held her back or kept her from a different life. But of course this isn’t Dean’s fault. Dean’s love was unique in that it was traditional and progressive in the areas that seemed to matter most. But in the end it wasn’t enough. Dean was also very comfortable with doing just enough to have enough. I think this translated as childishness and lack of ambition and made her feel overwhelmed. Feeling like the success of their family and moving up in the world was entirely dependent on her. I also felt like she wanted Dean to be as miserable as she was and it bothered her that he wasn't. I can honestly see and relate to both sides.

    If they ever decide to expand on this I am hoping they dive more into Kitty's character. Next to Perrito's her backstory is probably the most tragic, but unlike Perrito it's part of the reason she has trust issues, she's also lived a life long before meeting Puss which causes me to wonder if there is a deeper motivation behind her not showing up at Santa-Coloma for a reason other than Puss being so arrogant and self-absorbed.

And Kitty's always been the type to play things close to the vest until someone breaks down her walls. Like when she talked to Puss about her claws or when Perrito told her about his backstory. And I'm pretty the reason Kitty was always on Puss' case in the movie because they still technically competing for the same score and as she told Puss in the first movie that's what she's all about.

    My friend raised a point when we watched it together that the ending _could_ have been improved. She said that because the wish represents an "unattainable ideal", they should never have reached the star in the first place, or even have known it was real. She said it was unnecessary for them to actually confirm the existence of the wish or the star in order for them to complete their arcs; they could have realized that they had already gotten their wishes and decided to go home, as the wish no longer matters at that point. However, I did not fully agree, as reaching the star (not only made for a beautifully animated sequence but also) served to demonstrate exactly what and how much they were willing to sacrifice in order to go back to their old lives without the wish and embrace what they had. They had to get a real chance at the wish to PROVE (to show, not tell) that they really didn't feel they needed it. I do think my friend had a valid point, but taking into account the medium (in a live action movie, the ending would have been hard to pull off without a big budget; in animation anything is possible so its a good call to take advantage of any opportunities for showing off that magic) and the target audience (children have less patience for "the treasure was the friends we made along the way lets forget about the magical glowy thing and pack up and go home; because kids see things more objectively and can have difficulty understanding the underlying themes and nuance if it isn't demonstrated to them).

    • @TheMovieConnoisseur_
      @TheMovieConnoisseur_ Рік тому

      Your friend makes a very good point, and it would've been interesting to see it actually, but I think I agree with you in that the point might've been lost with a big portion of the audience, and the ending sequence we got was pretty good, I don't see them topping it off.

  • @WilliamWizer

    I find interesting that most of the characters got what they wanted. that's one hell of a wish. Puss, Goldilocks, Kitty, Death and Perrito got their wish granted in one way or another. Not often do you see a flawless execution of a full length feature film, especially animated. They come along, once in a decade or two, but this was the shocker of the last decade. I'm naturally a rewatcher. I'd rather rewatch a movie I like instead of looking for something new to watch. And, every once in a while, I'll watch something new, either because it's interesting, I've heard good things about it, or it's something that I've been looking forward to for a while. This flew under the radar, I legitimately didn't know about it until a few weeks ago.
