ASCENT Project Launch
COMESA and the World Bank signed a Financing Agreement for the implementation of the Accelerating Sustainable & Clean Energy Access Transformation (ASCENT) in AFE Region Multi-Phase Programmatic Approach (MPA) in December, 2023. The ASCENT Program design reflects the evolution of the World Bank to deliver solutions and impacts at scale. ASCENT integrates key elements of the new vision expressed in the World Bank’s Evolution:
adopting an augmented country engagement approach that yields development outcomes at community, national, regional, and global levels;
exploiting synergies from the mobilization of domestic revenues, private capital, and climate financing, while combining traditional and innovative instruments; and fully leveraging the potential of World Bank institutions, while also harnessing partnerships, recognizing that no single institution can meet the financing needs of ASCENT and that strategic concessional financing must be deployed to maximize impact.
ASCENT’s MPA will form an important part of the proposed Energy Transition and Access (ETA) Global Challenge Program (GCP), which is under development as a response to eight global challenges identified as priorities in the World Bank Evolution. The ETA GCP will aim at increasing access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy by scaling up clean energy, phasing down fossil-fuel use, and supporting a just transition. The ASCENT MPA consists of three Pillars, namely: Regional and National Platforms to Accelerate Energy Access, Expanding Grid Electrification, and Scaling Distributed Renewables and Clean Cooking Solutions.

    Glad to see the community having means to make a living, I hpe this type of thinking (Women only owned business) doesn't start gender/sex disputes in Africa, kinda like the west has. Kinda surprised to see "Women only" anything in that part of the world.

    Formalization of Informal Small Scale Cross Border traders businesses requires new business models as an extension of the traditional model which should be jointly implemented between CBTAs and stakeholders in trade facilitation programmes. If CBTAs remain participants, formalization will take time to be achieved, but they must be drivers.

    COMESA might be the largest pan-African market. To rip the benefits of such a large market, COMESA-members should set focus on a continental infrastructure (and technology) agenda: from Northern to Southern Africa, products and services must be delivered in a hassle-free fashion. The absence of adequate infrastructure and cutting-edge technology may jeopardize the potentials of a common market and thereby COMESA-countries' development.

    I am personally glad by this development. In most rural areas, due to lack of people like (comesa) to come on board,Many youths drop out of school and engage themselves in early marriages which has been contributing to the under development of our country, Zambia and Africa at large. Most parts of our country,people receive good rainfall and all what we know is, maize farming,which is often done once in a year.My humble submission to whom it may concern,kindly consider extending empowerments of this kind to other parts of Zambia,especially in northern province.
