Premiere of Pandemic Preludes 2020
27 Pandemic Preludes (2020) is a dynamic set of character pieces for piano solo. There are motives that link the individual preludes throughout but the pieces were not intentionally composed as a cycle. Each piece pays homage to a broad range of compositional styles and techniques running the gamut between common practice and the avant-garde. My goal was to explore and investigate concepts and ideas evident in diverse musical languages through the lense of reminiscence and reflection. The 27 Pandemic Preludes examine melodic, motivic, rhythmic, harmonic and structural aspects of musical composition by presenting musical environments where different elements are juxtaposed through dialogue and contrast. Explorations of fingering, pedaling, tone development and phrasing questions are embedded into the music and therefore address these key issues in piano technique regularly. These concepts are all relevant to the pursuit of a proper practice technique that can be applied to all keyboard literature from the past to the present. I invite you to sit back and enjoy these character pieces, some more textural and figurative, while others are like portraits or still-life images, imprints of an era or musical personalities throughout history.

Just like Chopin wanted it to be
This is the best and most correct version I’ve heard
@lucapoli9602 thank you, Luca. I appreciate this!
😮
i don't know why the goldberg variation is so popular
sickk
its always nice when Im recommended a fellow pianist by the algorithm
thanks for listening, @cfmfxr
...full recording coming soon, stay tuned!
Got this from the algorithm, very nice
@@hextobyte thank you! Full recording coming soon…I’ll post it here🎹🎶
Impressive play ! But I find it even more impressive how you managed to place a grand piano in this space 😳
@@LesterOnce thank you! Kind of like playing from the inside of your sound. Watch for the full recording, I’ll post it here. 🎹🎶
Beautiful work, beautiful performance
@@Fakery thank you for your comment🙏 I’ll be posting more of this work soon. Glad you enjoy it.
Hoe zou je zoiets op bladmuziek noteren? Fascinerend!
Hi Alexander, i wasnt sure which language to use, it appeared with a dutch titel. Thnx for the response. Friend of mine writes filmmusic with similar techniques and prepared piano's. Harry de Wit is his name. You a performer? Erik
@ interesting…all I see is “Crumb: Makrokosmos…” standard name with title in what would be Greek… it is the name of his cycles of Fantasie Pieces for Amplified Piano. Yes, I am a pianist, composer and pedagogue.
You are correct, it was in english. I am dutch born but lived in New Zealand for 22 years, my brain made this english appear dutch... I myself am a jazz pianist with a fascination for interesting sounds. Enjoy listening to and playing Dave Brubeck melodies. Love and health! Erik
@ that’s great! It is a unique language for sure…
"He finally found peace, as so many others had done, in the abstract architecture of Bach, occasionally ornamented with Mozart. / And so Discovery drove on toward Saturn, as often as not pulsating with the cool music of the harpsichord, the frozen thoughts of a brain that had been dust for twice a hundred years." - Arthur C. Clarke, 2001: A Space Odyssey. Well done. 🌹
@@PercivalBlakeney gratitude🙏
Your slower tempo is my normal tempo right now!I’ve always had trouble getting this one to tempo. Sounds great!
@@briandiltsmusic I appreciate your comment, this is a deceivingly difficult etude to play precise and with the “brillante” brilliance and projection as well as fast tempo. I’ve found going just below your threshold for tempo will help to center your rhythm and allow you to fly!
No way different performers can play this music the same way, no need to ascribe copyright label here, UA-cam! Were playing the music and this is the way it goes!🎹❤
I’ll never be able to do this! You stopped me at whistling. :-)
Well, there are plenty of birds for hire!
Very good !
That is cool.
Crumb was a visionary composer. He asks us to understand the entire instrument, the physics, acoustic and qualities… not just how to fine-tune pushing the levers!
I think this piece is too complex for me to comprehend. I liked, even though it’s weird. Great work!
Thank you! It is a fantastic little puzzle, indeed.
I heard it while walking through hallways of mirrors in a dream.
nice performance! I also recorded that piece in my channel, but I used a different fingering technique. Please check it out and let me know what you think
I can see Bach questioning why we never added a second manual to pianos.
Glad you played it at a more calm temp. Too many idolize Gould even though his version is essentially a jumbled mess. People just like to hear things played "fast."
I disagree... Gould plays it extremely fast, yet incredibly clear. It's just that for some people, it might be hard to hear and follow, the music is complex. It's Godlike to play at his speed - when trying, we mortals are the ones that produce a jumbled mess. But trying highlights the imperfections in our techniques.
@@arman2339 I play the piano and I am quite familiar with listening to polyphony, especially in Bach. A lot of Gould's early playing was "radical" and not so good. His later recording of the Goldberg Variations is pretty good. Also, he was a stupid pianist, so he edited a lot of his playing for recording. Much easier to be "god like" post editing. And yes, Gould did play remarkably clear voicing, however this particular variation was a mess.
@@DangerRussDayZ6533 Thanks for your view, it was interesting to read.
But his thrills and interpretation are very Gould, while not so fast 😅 How could you appraise this play while criticizing Gould
@@arman2339painful to read more like

Exactly as it should be. ☺️
Fantastic performance! Full embodiment of the phrase gestures and intricate figurations that really seem, to my ear, to build the identity of this great piece. Exceptional work!
Thank you Stephen! This piece is a lot of fun, tricky like a technical trail!💥⛰🎶🎹
Amazing!! Well done, Alex!
Thank you Jeff! So much incredible vitality and rhythm in this music!!
It's not Gould, but I wish I could play it like you. Well done!
Thank you! I love Gould but I do not ever intend to play “like” him (or anyone for that matter!) Must play as you play. With Gould, you get Gould. That works for many things but not Bach! Cheers.
Exceptionally powerful use of resonance and gesture, with a very captivating musical language! Beautiful piece, beautiful performance!!
💯💯💯💯💯💕❤👍👍👍👍👏👏👏
