Does your machine have 2 separate drive motors? 1 for turning, 1 for positioning? I'm in uk and converting an old copy lathe to Cnc. I'm looking to convert from ac 3kw drive motor to 750watt geared servo for positioning using an electromagnetic clutch setup. I have mounted knives and router on air slides for change over.

I would pay ten times the amount for a Spindle made by hand. This lowers the beauty of handmade wood products, down to cheap Chinese knockoffs... sorry if that hurt someone's feelings, well, not really :-)

So where is the square spindle turning?? The only square part about this spindle is the pommel. Fail! At lease turn it by hand using chisels, this is just too lazy.

There is nothing wrong with using a lathe since lathes have been around for hundreds of years, the only difference is that lathes nowadays are powered by electricity not your feet. Where I do have a problem is that this is all computer controlled. It is a lazy way to mass produce spindles. I turn my own spindles using a cheap lathe and a nice set of chisels, nothing like turning your own spindles by hand. I would never purchase a system like this that does everything for you.
