First Congregational Church of Houston

At First Congregational Church of Houston we don’t require any creeds for membership, and we encourage members to be free thinkers. We welcome seekers, questioners, believers, and everyone in between. In addition to serving others in need, we advocate for social justice in the public square and are not afraid to let our voices be heard on moral issues.
We trace our roots to the Pilgrims and Puritans, who came to this country as religious pioneers. Like the minister of the Pilgrims, we believe “there is yet more light and truth to break forth from God’s holy word.” We are proud members of the United Church of Christ, a denomination of 5,000 congregations across the country known for its social justice advocacy.

Sermon - "When the Going Gets Tough" - Lynette Ross
I was with you all along until you said there are plenty of things that's not God, like chaos, entropy, destruction. But these are all things that're embedded in creation. Entropy and chaos allows for greater complexity, it allows life. Destruction, like exploding stars, also give way to life. Also, by saying that there are things that's not God, you put equals before God. You cannot divorce creation from destruction, they are one and the same. But I understand why you might think like that, because in Christian theology, there's a strong emphasis on Satan, distinguishing as enemy of God and some people Christians even think God and Satan are equal in power.
What is the difference between omnipresence in theistic theology and Panentheism in the process theology as relating to God being present in Hell
Love it.
Is the interpreter a new addition, or was it only for a song or week?
Tremendous sermon/words! ❤️👍
Thank you so much for this reading of this tremendous sermon!!👍
There is a difference between Pantheism and Panentheism.
Thank you for the gift of this reading.
This is a beautiful worship song, we are singing it on Sunday but only have the melody line, is there an entire score available please?
Loved it. Very smart, deep, insightful sermon. I'll watch it again. Please do another on Christain mysticism. As for the political part (Trump), most people never voted for him because they liked him. They made a "deal with the devil," in order to get things done. People are fed up with political sophistry (language tricks), and impasses.
I wish I had known. I loved him so. Sheri Sedgeley
I love the part in the music that says it's for lighting candles, and there you have your candle on your keyboard. Thanks for sharing your beautiful performance.
Damn! They're good! (As I sit here before church, crying when I should be writing an Advent reflection.)
❤
This is actually the Dan Banul service from 11/18/2033
Lyrics: 0:25 Come to Me, O weary traveler. Come to Me, in your distress; come to Me, you heavy burden; come to Me and find your rest. 0:48 *Instrumental* 0:54 Take My yoke and leave your troubles; take My yoke and come with Me. Take My yoke, I Am beside you; take and leran humility. 1:19 *instrumental* 1:40 Rest in Me, O weary traveler; rest in Me and do not fear. Rest in Me, My heart is gentle; rest and cast away your care. God bless you all. ❤ I love you and Jesus loves you more. 💗 Matthew 11:28-30 King James Version 28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
Love this hymn it's so meaningful especially when I get to read it out as well when people fat shame in the congregation
I don't know about Hymn No. 497 "When Israel Was in Egypt's Land/GO DOWN MOSES." The line, "and let us all in Christ be free," stands out to me. The story of Exodus is about Jewish people, specifically the Hebrews, which the hymn acknowledges, yet it doesn't appear clear within the hymn itself whether we are distinguishing these people from us as Christians or if we are saying we have fully inherited their legacy or some sort of compromise between the two. The mention of Christ seems outrageous to me here because Christ was not even alive at the time of this story, so not only does it not make sense for the people of this story to "be free in Christ," it also seems like an insult to specifically modern Judaism to wish that for the people of this story. One could argue that maybe it is just the Christian singers who wish to be "free in Christ," but I don't believe that to be a good faith argument. It occurred to me that the intention may have been for the speaker of the hymn to be God themself, but if that can be argued as a fair interpretation, it is certainly not made as clear as it should be. I'm concerned this is an example of irresponsible handling of the admittedly complicated and historically fraught relationship between Christianity and Judaism. As Christians in a hegemonically Christian, anti-Semitic nation, I believe we should ere on the side of caution with such things. I don't believe we have the room to ask to be given the benefit of the doubt. I am admittedly no religious scholar, so if I have underestimated delicate balancing of the above concerns, I apologize, but I would appreciate some explanation of maybe what I'm missing here if possible.
Women can't be pastors, they have no place at the front of the church, they are to keep quiet in service. She is leading all members of this church to the warm depths of hell.
Nice service today, nice music
Enjoyed the service…thank you…good to see everyone
✝️ Happy Saint Patrick’s Day!!! May the Lord bless your church forever and ever! Amen!
Rev. Page, I’d like to thank you deeply for this sermon. I found it quite fortuitously. I’ve intuitively been a panentheist for a long time now, and in so being, I’ve learned from Judaism, Buddhism, and Hinduism, but I’ve only now begun with Christianity. I’ve decided that I want to learn and experience the value in Christian spirituality, but the classic, dominator conceptions of God and Jesus-and experiences that I and my loved ones have had with the church-push me away quite viscerally. It’s hard to stay on the course of learning from Christianity and loving Jesus as a guide for us all, but reminders like this show me the value that we as a society can gain from Christianity, regardless of the cracks in its previous iterations. Thank you sincerely. I wish I had a church like yours in my area.
Thought provoking sermon, Lynette…thank you. Janice V.

Bravo Lynette!
Great service!
This is what I needed to hear, today. Thank you.
Gorgeous and inventive!
Another inspiring worship service! Good sermon Jon, and the choir’s anthem, wow. And MJ, your postlude was among the best I’ve ever heard.
This presentation is masterfully serene and gentle.

Hello! Do you have resources for sex positive Christianity?
Not religious but this definition of sin makes sense.
Worshipping in person with my community of faith is always my preference, but when I cannot because of my covid exposure I am deeply grateful to those who make watching this service possible. Jon, your sermon moved me, and what a great introduction to our church you gave to Jared’s Uncle Dave! Choir, your anthem was superb, and sopranos, your descant on the last verse of the last hymn sent me heavenward.
Great music …. Wow
. Pope Francis is not Former Cardinal Bergoglio. Pope Francis is Satan, this is the great deception that Jesus spoke about our time. Now you will see great tribulation that Jesus spoke about started with China virus with great Earthquake and 3 days of darkness and asteroid hitting the earth.
Your slow reading out loud helps me feel Tillich's words more closely, deeply. Your warm voice & intention brings home the meaning more than dry print & page. Knowing that you find these words so moving too, quietly brings Grace to separation & helps bridge the gulf of estrangement....from longing to belonging...Thank you. Happy Christmas!
Thank you for this act of grace.
Nicely sung! BTW... The text on the screen does not quite match the lyrics you're singing, just fyi...
Omg. Gave me goosebumps.
Such a beautiful Job!
If ever there was a “sermon” (rather a mis-leading agenda based on opinion and not the inspired Word of God, this is it). My heart hurts for your congregation and any future potential guest or members, God forbid. I’ll be the first to say as the Apostle did, that I too feel as, “I am the least of these” and here today I have nothing to “prove” other than to take a stand against the Heresy and unbiblical view of which you spoke. If we can agree the Bible exist and I’d say we do, then also agree that there are some truths in the Word, and I can only hope someone in your position, would agree, then we have to conclude, the entire Word is true, Inspired by God and does not contradict itself. Matthew 24:24 comes to mind as I heard this fairy tale version of what I am sure a lot of people wish were true about the Bible and what it claims regarding sex, but what you have stated isn’t true, not Biblically in any sense or way. Matthew 24:24 says, “For false Christs and false prophets will arise and will show great signs and wonders, so as to mislead, if possible, even the elect.” While that verse comes to mind, I don’t see you as a false “Christ” or even “prophet” in any sense of the word, rather I believe that an earlier verse in Matthew in 22:29 better describes you (at least regarding this topic and it being the first of yours I’ve seen. It states, “But Jesus answered them and said to them, “You are mistaken, not understanding the Scripture nor the power of God.” It seems to coincide well in this case that you argue as a truth which is factually biblically false with a passage from Mark 7:13, “ thus invalidating the word of God by your tradition which you have handed down; and you do many such things as that.” How are forgetting Deuteronomy 12:32 “Whatever I command you, you shall be careful to do; you shall not add to nor take away from it.” That is exactly what you are doing by insinuating that just because times have changed the law of God and His commandments have too. I behoove you in brotherly love through Christ to reconsider your view and the Biblical truth which you choose to omit, Proverbs warns of what you have done… Proverbs 30:5-6, “Every word of God is tested; He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him. Do not add to His words Or He will reprove you and you will be proved a liar.” Again in Deuteronomy 4:2 it says, “You shall not add to the word which I am commanding you, nor take away from it, that you may keep the commandments of the Lord your God which I command you.” Perhaps it is Revelation with the strongest of warnings, 22:18-19, “I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book; if anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues which are written in this book; and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will away his part from the tree of life and the holy city, which are written in this book.” So what is it that I believe in the Word you have abused and misused to mislead those you want to follow you? Hebrews 13:4, “Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefined, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous.” Genesis 2:24, “Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.” 1 Corinthians 6:18, “Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body.” You say what is horrible is self hate and self condemnation, then how can you state in your temporal state of “spiritual” authority that anything else is both ok and it’s ok to sin against ones self? While the Bible is not self contradicting, this alone proves you are and what you are speaking of and may yourself refer to as preaching is only lies and mistruths, not the Biblical truth or the Commands God gives. We are called to Love God, Love People and Reach the World, but the Bible makes it clear we are to be in this world and not of it. I’d read also Colossians 3:5, Exodus 20:14, Genesis 39:7-10, 1 Corinthians 6, Ephesians 5:3, Proverbs 6:32, Galatians 5:19-21. Really read LEVITICUS 18:22 & 1 Timothy 1:10, 1 Corinthians 6:9, Jude 1:7, 1 Corinthians 6:12-20 & chapter 7, 1 John 2:15-16 & Romans 1:24-27. Romans 13:13-14, 1 Corinthians 7:1-2, Leviticus 20:13, Galatians 5:19, 1 Thessalonians 4:3, Romans 1:26-27, Mark 7:20-23, 2 Timothy 2:22, Again, I pray you see the wrong in your ways and the way you view is as ok to change the scripture to fit modern day scripture when Jesus is the same yesterday, today and FOREVER.
Thanks for your input. We welcome the exchange of ideas, and we would love to get together and discuss this in person. Please reach out to the FCC office and we can make a time to get together and discuss your thoughts.
From minute 12 on I felt like I had found exactly what I believe in. Please tell me where I can find more.
