From Aggravating to Automatic: Fingerpicking Challenge (on a Stratocaster with vintage strings)
Here's a very short, very simple, somewhat musical exercise to help build right hand hybrid picking independence for any occasion. Use it as a helpful first step or technique reinforcement before tackling more complex applications (read: Do this to get better at playing songs.)

Yamaha THR30II Fender Deluxe Country Tones for Live Settings
Переглядів 3,2 тис.Рік тому
I put my original country tone settings to the test in a few live gigs (instead of using tube amps). This video (most likely my last on the subject) shows updated tones that reflect the changes that were necessary in those live situations. They represent a working balance between tone and behavior. The THR colors the guitar's sound differently than a tube amp; I aimed for a middle ground where ...
C.A.G.E.D. for Country Soloing (and Rhythm) Step 1: Play Songs.
Переглядів 2,5 тис.Рік тому
The goal is to play spontaneously and musically - as freely as whistling a tune; to feel at home anywhere on the fretboard while confidently exploring musical ideas in real time. The methods - virtually endless, so here's another: the solos ARE the chords (rhythm lesson at 13:45). Play old country songs. Make those mental connections and suddenly (slowly, actually) you will be awesome. Here's t...

Be Free on the Fretboard - That Roy Nichols Sound
Переглядів 3,4 тис.Рік тому
Here's the secret - the solos ARE the chords. Is this CAGED? Of course it is - everything is. But this is an accessible, enjoyable, musical way to get familiar with those chord shapes and triads while seeing exactly how these iconic melodies spring directly out of those shapes. And it's music. In this video, we look at Roy Nichols' use (some would perhaps say over-use) of resolving on the domin...
Yamaha THR30ii Effects Loop Tutorial for Loop Pedals

Yes, it's a bit of a work-around, but the Yamaha THR does have an effect loop function. It's great for using a loop pedal live. Here it is: First, open the app, go to settings, and make sure "Guitar Audio" is set to zero. Then, simply connect the output of the pedal to the auxiliary in put of the THR (1/4 inch to 1/8 inch cable required), and connect the line out of the THR to the input of the ...
Fender Super Reverb tones on a Yamaha THR 30ii (pics of 3 updated settings)

This isn't meant as "tube vs. digital" - just some pretty decent classic country tones from a Fender Super Reverb and a Yamaha THR30ii side by side with the same mic, same room, same guitar, and same player. There are screenshots of the tone settings (at about 1:10, 3:35, and 5:10) and, as for the weird names, Dorothy is the guitar. I updated these from a prior video from when I first got the T...

Unlock the fretboard! How to improvise musically with minimal theory. "Abilene"

Here's a relatable, enjoyable way to get familiar with the fretboard and move around on it spontaneously and musically. We learn classic country songs and simply consider how the melodies and solos are a natural, visible outgrowth of the chords of the song. This one - based on "Abilene" by George Hamilton - is a bit more complex than some of the others; the chord progression is more involved. I...

Dude, thank you so much! I didn't know I had to go to the app to kill the feedback loop. Kept lowering guitar volume on the amp and wondering why it's still going into feedback. I had this problem for months and so I had to use my audio mixer and external speakers, and it was such a stationary party pooper. Thanks so much for that. It's truly inspiring - not just to me but probably to anyone who reads it. I started playing in the 80's, and I've noticed that players who started learning back then - with no internet, no streaming services, no ability to play any song at any moment... those players really had to listen. As a result, I think you're hardwired to learn this stuff pretty fast, no matter your age. As for "working harder" - I'm guessing your idea of hard work is a hell of lot tougher than what passes for hard work these days. Keep going.
