Lovely work! It's great to see the combination of calligraphy and image. I do both and find planning layouts tricky.
How do you go about designing the scroll work so the roundness is uniform and cohesive with the other scrolls? Is it impromptu or mapped out?
Hi AR, thanks for your question. I did quite a bit of trial and error with a pencil designing the style of the letter A and then the scrollwork around and through it. I looked at lots of photos of similar styles to get ideas, but in the end I needed to make the curves look right with my design. When I did the final penwork, I followed my pencil lines and then erased the pencil after the ink dried and cured. It was quite a long process, but I learned a lot about where to place ovals vs circles, watching videos of calligraphers who do flourishing. Hope this helps!
Thanks so much, Joanne! Your work is really beautiful. Thanks, too, for your inspiring and encouraging interview with Karen 😊
Thank you buttonuk! I appreciate your encouragement!
Thank you for your video and this beautiful creation! I have one question: what if I were to have a coat of gold watercolours on the letters before printing? Would I still need to paint the gold over the copy? Thank you in advance for your answer :)
Yes, unfortunately in talking with several people, including the giclée printers (the gold standard for printing quality), there is no good way to get a shiny result without adding shine after the print is already made. But I encourage you to try... perhaps you'll find a solution! One thing I can say is that I can always get shine on certain parts of a print, depending where the light source is, but never on the whole print. Best of luck, and let me know if you come up with something!
If you use Pergamena (fake parchment) or parchment, you can correct calligraphy mistakes by scraping the ink off, then burnishing the parchment smooth with a polished stone (agate is one).
Yes, that's a great idea. I have fake parchment, but it's much too thin to scrape without creating a hole. I'll have to try the thicker version and see how it works... after all, that's how the ancient manuscripts were able to be done without visible errors, such as the Book of Kells.
Are you for hire?

I have been discouraged by how my gold leafing does not seem to come out well. The whole leaf comes off. It is my how maniest trial yet... I have watched a million youtube videos, some really good. What I love about your video is your details, very pleasantly. However, sadly I realized you are not posting anymore or once in a blue moon, otherwise I would subscribe to your channel. You are so pleasant to listen to. Please find a way of posting more. Not all products have to be genius art but for me, I think it is the dedication combined with some amazing outcome that is sometimes so unexpected. Je ne sais quoi. You certainly have it. I hope you can post more.
You have encouraged me to post more. I've taken lots of footage but often get bogged down in the editing and processing. I'll try to become more disciplined... the art just keeps calling me!
@@joannemayarts6765 There was a time when UA-cam valued short videos and some UA-camrs felt pressured cutting down their videos, so they could be part of the UA-cam Search Engine Optimization. During that period, some of the videos became ridiculously short and lost their attraction. Finally, UA-cam has these shorts now and lets people post there regular videos. The short, I find, attract to your channel and still give some nice income. I see more and more posters now putting out long videos, some really long, where you can watch the paint dry... like literally😁😆 But we have this tool that we can skip. Don't let yourself be discouraged by editing. Just put it out there. Thank you for your reply.
@@Sunnyside--Up Agreed! I should have some things up soon.
I’ve been in love with illuminated lettering but have been unable to find much assistance. You’ve explained everything so well. Thank you! So helpful. Gorgeous work!
You are so welcome! And thank you!
Do you just put the sealer on the gold letter ? Or over the Whole piece ?
Sorry for my delay in responding... I put sealer only on the gold letter, but after 2 coats I then use a spray clear varnish for the whole piece to seal both the gold once more and also the ink.
Impressive. Very nice.
Thank you for your comment!
Came across your informative video, and made sure I would not leave without thanking you. I enjoyed it, and I cannot wait to try it out on my own work.
Excellent! I'd love to hear more after you complete some projects.
Where do you buy?
I bought the leafing on Amazon.com and the glue at our local arts & crafts store. Here's a link to some of the products--I've used "gold metal leaf," also called "imitation gold leaf." www.amazon.com/gold-leaf/s?k=gold+leaf
How you can manage speaking, while you're creating, simply blows me away. Thanks for ALL your details. Love this video.
Thank you for your kind comment!
Lovely result. If you burnish the paper where the size will go it’s not so absorbent .
absolutely beautiful work!
Thank you!
Amazing, You are very experienced, well done!
Thanks so much!
I still can't believe how magnificent your work is. I loved this video. Starting with calligraphy but hope once i can write a decent text to make illuminations on them as i'm very comfortable using watercolors. (or as comfortable as one can get with such a difficult medium) The gold leaf i have never tried. seems to be very difficult. but i have the feeling that more than difficult is meticulous task. you are very good artist. i just found your channel but loving it so far.
I have more gold leaf projects in mind to do in the near future. Thanks for your comments!
Hello, came here following your recommendation on the painting gouach on an illuminated calligraphy letter design. And yes! I freezed too when the branches started to bleed. well saved tho. As you said, I use micron pens for the sketching when using watercolors, but more often than not, i use a pencil sketch, apply watercolor, and once dry i use either the micron pen or a nib pen. I loved your brause blue pumpking nib and your handler, seems very comfortable. I'm struggling here in Mexico to get brause nibs (For calligraphy) Either companies don't ship to Mexico or the shipping cost are very high with no much to add to de invoice order to make it worth the shipping. Congratulations you are a very fine artist. Learning a lot from you. Thank you very much.
Thank you. I am interested to know how Speedball India ink works. Both Sumi ink and Speedball India ink have a little shellac in them to help them be shiny and more or less waterproof. Perhaps Speedball has more shellac and will be more stable. I will try it in a future project! I like using Brause nibs, and am equally comfortable using Speedball C-series nibs, especially for larger lettering. For line and wash projects I like pointed pen nibs. Nikko G is a good one!
How scary to go to all that magnificent artwork with a bleeding ink. Wich waterproof ink would you recommend? Just a newbie here.
Yes - I've lately been very happy using a Micron pen by PIGMA. These become waterproof after the ink has dried and set (typically after about 2 hours). If you're interested in seeing a funny "save" of a project using Sumi ink, watch this video: ua-cam.com/video/evXAWzjE5EA/v-deo.html
@@joannemayarts6765 Thank you very much for your kind answer. I search for the speedball calligraphy ink and it is waterproof or so they say. I know the Micron pens. But i like to use pen nibs and all that for calligraphy . This new interest fit me very well as i paint mostly watercolor. So i can wait for my order to arrive. I'm currently using a cheap national brand (México) Wich is useless . I'll watch your recommended video ;) Love your work.

You're welcome, Gerard. Thanks for the feedback. Best wishes to you!
I've tried this a few times but never managed to get a clean edge. Nice tip for that I'll give it a go.
How is it working for you?
oh wow thank you for sending me the link what beautiful work
lovely lovely work thank you for sharing do you have a video showing how you put on the gold for the A
Yes - thank you for your nice message! Here's the link: ua-cam.com/video/GA1_Q8T0jZ8/v-deo.html
Thanks for sharing - great video. I know you really like the stiff brush for cleaning up the edges of the gold leaf but it really does scratch up the leaf - even if it’s not real gold- a sable brush might be better - and you can prevent the little grains of the paper from showing through the leaf by burnishing the paper (where size will be applied) before putting on the size. Cheers.
Thank you, Suku Mac, for your suggestions! I used hot press watercolor paper to gain a fairly smooth finish and to make the calligraphy look more even, but didn't think about burnishing the paper under the gold leaf. I'll try that next time! Also, I haven't noticed any scratches in the leaf, but certainly if a soft sable brush works well enough to eliminate the excess it would prevent potential damage. I found that the softer brushes I tried needed much more effort, and my result was not as sharp on the edges. Best wishes!
Very useful information. Tried my first gold leaf project and the edges are terrible. Now I have a plan to fix. I'm a little fascinated by that strange angled pin. Years ago, in a precomputer architectural drafting class I was taught to hold my pen at a 90 deg. angle. I just never got comfortable with that.
@@dennismitchell5276 Thank you for your message, Dennis. The oblique pens are used in calligraphy - if you want to try an inexpensive one, Speedball sells them for under $3. Find them at Dick Blick, Hobby Lobby, John Neal Booksellers, or any store that carries writing implements. Don't forget to purchase a nib, too. I'd recommend a Nikko G to get started. Good luck!
Probably missing a thing or seventeen but why not simply paint with gold? Based on the rest of that page I'm assuming this isn't a demo piece to show technique.
Thanks for your question, Sygarth Null. Gold paints are significantly less reflective than gold metal leaf, unless using an expensive 23K or 24K paint. The liquid media in the metal leaf paints that are used to move the gold flecks over the paper tend to diminish the shine of the gold.
Great work, and I like the way how you explained everything in detail. Thank you so much.♥️
Thank you!
Thanks for the great video! Can you please give the exact name of the Gold Metal Leaf/ brand so that I can search for it on the Internet. I thank you in advance!
Hello Ilona, It has been a while since I purchased the gold metal leaf, but I know I got it on Amazon in 3 colors of gold. Probably this company or another similar one: www.amazon.com/Imitation-Gilding-Crafting-Decoration-Furniture/dp/B078YNHWWL/ref=sr_1_2?_encoding=UTF8&c=ts&dchild=1&keywords=Craft+Gold+%26+Metal+Leaf&qid=1604521149&s=arts-crafts&sr=1-2&ts_id=3298705011 Best wishes, Joanne
