Rewatching them all on dvd all release editions via a Xbox 1 even though I have the digital uhd copies sound is way better on dvd over hd streamed
Does bluray have more film grain ? I enjoy the look of film more than things being digitally smoothed out.
It's the same master that was used for the blu-ray. No DNR was applied. There is only a slight temporal grain stabilisation but that's it.
Thank you for all your hard work
Thanks 😊
Awesome comparison. You appear honest in your reviews in return I subscribed to your channel. Where could I secure this custom 4k from?! It’s a shame that Cameron once was a person who cared about the integrity of his films and the way it originally looked.
Thank you :) It's only a work demo. I did not grade the whole movie. Even if I wanted to the UHD disc is filled with DNR and AI that cannot be undone. Besides, color grading is my field of work and I would never share personal gradings on a whole movie when I come to work for physical media editors. We Can only hope that we'll be able to get new masters and color gradings in the future. Mainstream physical media is in decline, maybe third party editors will re-release some of these titles in the future. I recommand you to buy the spanish ''bootleg'' blu-ray edition of True Lies that is a carbon copy of the 720p D-VHS.
i think part of the og look was highlights clipping, so kind of hate the new look, but it looks great technically. certainly an improvement if you care about dynamic range and colors.
Thank you for going to all the trouble to show us this
Thanks for these comparations. If i wanted to upgrade these then i need to import these and it will cost around 50$ each so not worthy for me
Clearly the 4K is superior HOWEVER, it’s an extremely close call between the 4k and the blu-ray upscaled by a Panasonic HDR optimizer.
Great comparison video. Very minor upgrade. Hdr is really the only improvement. Is the 4k better than bluray?-yes, but not dramatically
Yes. But it manage to retrieve the lost information in the specular lights that were clipped on the blu-ray. The color grading is also different with more yellowish skin tones.
Taco bell or pizza hut version?
@@menkros1 It's the UHD Taco Bell version here but you can chose the one you want in the menu.
Accurate
Huge difference thank u
Great comparison. Bravo!
Thanks ☺️
is this with dolby vision on or just the standard HDR...? i compared the blu ray to the 4k last night and the blu ray def was brighter and more vivid than the dolby vision 4k.
On UA-cam it's only in HDR10. But DV Dynamic Metadatas won't really matter for this title. If your SDR blu-ray looks brighter it's probably due to a wrong image mode (Dynamic/Standard/Sports) or a wrong calibration. Scopes don't lie, you can see how the HDR presentation is far brighter than the SDR blu-ray. Your SDR image should look as the one in this video if your TV is correctly calibrated/set-up. :)
@@spikewilliam hmm i tried it again and i do have my tv on a vivid setting, running the movie off a pansonic ub820 player, in dolby vision setting... but the blu ray still looks better to me hahaha. Grain and detail is pretty bad when anything is in moving vs stagnant scenes in the new 4K uhd release. The regular original blu ray seems like how the movie was meant to be watched and seems closer to how I remember it being in theaters colors wise. So I guess in the end its just subjective haha
I cancelled my pre-order since I heard about the errors. I’ll order it once it been fixed. I still have the old Blu-ray.
I did the same
I always had an issue with the colors of the former full-hd Blu-Ray. It looks fixed with the 4k right?
Hello. Which edition are you referring to? There are several.
@@spikewilliam It was really reddish in my souvenir so i think it was the 2019 edition. Definitely not the other one here that looks really blue. But if there was others than those two, i don't know
keep up good work, we appreciate it !
Thank you for your nice comment.
@ ❤️❤️
thought this looked much better that kbv1, didnt have that blobby grain ....have no idea why that would be
I actually prefer the 2008 with the green hue, there are many other films that have this characteristic and make all the difference IMO. I find it sad when a remaster is done and this is removed.
Exactly the comparison I was looking for, thank you. So clearly not brilliant detail-wise but the HDR looks a good improvement
Lionsgate clearly used the 2003 DI. Grain structure is typical of old 2K DI. The HDR presentation is an improvement for retrieving highlights details that are no longer clipped. The real issue of this new color grading lies on the skin tone hues that I find a little too warm. It might also be too bright for my personnal taste.
This channel is amazing. Subscribed.
Thank you for your kind comment and your subscription !
Hmm, looks like an HDR upgrade from a 2K source?
The DI was done at a 2K definition back in 2003. Making a new 4K master would imply rescanning the footage, developing it, and re-editing it. Its easier for Lionsgate to use the old DI and just make an HDR grading out of it. At least the whites are no longer clipped in the HDR presentation.
It seems to be a bit too bright in the 4k, maybe?
@@Mimbrera666you are not watching this in HDR, and with an HDR colorspace compatible profile, and likely not on an HDR device…Hence, you can’t make heads or tails of this.
@@spikewilliam one thing to note Tarantino doesn't seem to be a fan of creating new 4k masters from scratch seems he would rather keep what was done originally than risk alternating it in some way at least for his films with a DI since jackie brown was pre DI and it got an original negative scan for 4k and he did approve all 3 new 4ks
Bonjour je viens de m'abonner à votre chaîne
Hello, the link is not working :( By the way, Have you worked in all the exorcism scene? It would be amazing if you could share that with us :) I'm working in the CBS version and that version has the colours like your edition but the image is so blur. Which software did you use to edit this video? thank you
Hello, The link is dead. There was an issue with my account and it was deleted. I will try to retrieve the original file and reupload it. I worked on the blu-ray SDR file, upscaled to 4K using Topaz Video AI (Gaia) & Davinci Resolve Studio with custom DCTLs and various plug-ins (Neat Video, Dehancer, Film Convert.) The goal is to give a neutral image in the white balance using the primaries wheels (lift, gamma, gain) in order to get rid of the color grading.
john doe has the upper hand
Definitely will keep the Blu-ray and the Digibook is great.
The blu-ray Digibook is great. I love those old Warner releases.
35mm is the best. For home media, the closest we can get to the original colors is definitely the DVD.
There isn't much of a significant difference to upgrade from blu-ray to 4K. Infact, the sound is a downgrade from 7.1 to 5.1 DTS HD Master. Save your money for Panic Room....😆
Ladies and gentlemen we have ourselves an idiot
The 7.1 mix had a lot of issues, most of them corrected in the new 5.1
Interesting. Is it a new sound mixing or the previous 6 channels track that was present in the DVD and Laserdic releases ? I know that The Game has two different audio mixes, a Theatrical and a Near Field one. So i'm wondering if Se7en has something similar with its audio mixes.
I usually always prefer 4K, but damn do I miss some of the contrast in that SDR Blu-ray. Too many idiots complain movies are too dark, now we get over-brightened stuff.
Thanks for your comment. I also like the dark gritty look of the blu-ray but the DVD color grading looked more like the UHD release. The blu-ray was too contrasted on some shots and there was a lot of black crush/clipping. These issues were corrected (some others also appeared). A lot of work and effort were done for the making of this UHD disc. This might looked too over-processed and the greenish tone of the new color grading spills a litle too much on the whites but this is nevertheless a solid video presentation.
@@spikewilliam I still prefer the 4K. Watched it a couple days ago. Just a bit too bright for me.
1:10 so that's where he dropped in that cityscape haha
Thanks for posting!
This 35mm recreation is the perfect version i was searching for years! 😍 Does the full movie exist like this?
Unfortunately no. This is a just a work demo. It would take me a lot of work to restore and regrade the entire movie. I had to work this grading using the 1080p blu-ray disc since the UHD HDR presentation was too destructive on skin tones as well as some color slection tracking badly done.
it only does on LaserDisc and goes for like $1000
Thanks Spike - this cleared up a lot of questions I had about the colour grading
You're welcome
i like the vhs widescreen it had a better color
That’s cool
i like dvd color grading
Completely agree - shame they didn't use the same colour grading on the 4K UHD
@@yeeehaar It's a bit complicated. The DVD color grading was not good either and far from the original internegative. After the release of Reloaded & Revolutions, the Wachowskis wanted to homogenize all the films with a similar color grading across the three movies. For the release of the UHD re-editions, cinematographer Bill Pope wanted to change the color grading of the films again. There are therefore four different color grades for The Matrix...
If it wasn't for the DNR, then the Lowry restoration (2K used on Amazon and Disney+ prints) is the best fit of a customised HDR usage. Otherwise you did alot better than what Cameron did (due to overprocessed video from VHS to D-Theater release; reused Lowry restoration but DNR'd and AI upscaled on the 4K disc and digital prior of the long release.) It is a shame we waited for over 17 years into a crappy official revisionist mess.
The 4K UHD presentation was made out of a new negative scan of the movie. The master is different than the 1080p Amazon release which was sourced out of the previous old master. On UHD some shots are very problematic some others very well defined, Indeed a lot of artificial intelligence was used to create this disc, as well as a massive use of dnr. They tried to correct some out of focus shots by creating a combination of fake bokeh effects and image enhancement and It looks Bad. No real HDR grading work was also done, just a minium Rec.2100 HDR P3-D65 limited 203nits reference conversion that looks over-exposed. I don't recall Lowry Digital working on True Lies, The Abyss or Aliens Restorations. They did work on Avatar and Titanic though. Or maybe I'm wrong. This sequence has less DNR usage than the reste of the movie, that's why I choose it for my color correction. I did not restore the image to its original state, which was too neutral and I tried to keep the look Russell Carpenter was aiming for at that time (you can see blue lights were used in the backgroud). It's not that easy to make reverse color grading without propoer sources. On Aliens it took me hours of work, and I understand why in the end they did not even tried to make it look better in HDR. I agree it's a shame to have waited 17 years for that, but keep in mind that is what James Cameron wanted his movie to look like in UHD... it's like his obsession with HFR and TrueCut Motion... it's not for me but maybe it will appeal to others. I will keep my bootleg spanish blu-ray. ^^
Not only you color graded correctly to the theatrical experience, the HDR usage is graded better than the actual 4K release without suffers from color revisionist. This puts all releases (aside for the 2012 changes) of this film into shame. Hollywood studios are too afraid of hiring you as an HDR color grading restoration team. That why I subscribed to you!
Thank you for your kind comment and your subscription. I did this 4K upscale and restoration before the UHD was released. I'm also disappointed with the results on this one and The Abyss but not as I am on Terminator 2, True Lies & Aliens.
HOLY CRAP you de-cameronized it! Bravo! It looks exceptionally better than the original 4k release. 👏👏👏
Thank you! I'm currently working on a new color grading/4K master for Aliens too, that will be the next video :)
Soooo much better, wow ! <3. This is the version we should be getting </3 :'(.
Thanks! James Cameron wants his old movies to look like they were shot with modern digital cameras. Fortunately the blu-ray is still very solid.
i definitely prefer the theatrical color grading like original blu ray looked pretty good in this scene but 4k was way to over the top in this scene it honestly kind of looked like an instagram filter. good job restoring this scene would definitely want to see more.
Thank you. I restored the image from the 2010 blu-ray transfer wich was also pretty "blue-ish", but not as the 4K edition is. I would like the movie to be re-released in the future from another editor, like Arrow, Kino Lorber or Criterion and get the original color grading. That would be amazing!
@@spikewilliamdid you regrade the color of the whole film from the 4K master, by any chance?
I hope they release this 1.78:1 open matter version on 4K, this December. Listing photo on amazon funnily enough does not show the aspect ratio (just says Widescreen). This is way more immersive with more video! Also long overdue, The Abyss' extended cut on 4K.
I know that The Abyss 4K Master is already ready, since there were some special showings around the world. The 4K disc could be announced for its 35th anniversary next year (let's hope). I don't believe the Extented Cut was shown though... Indeed there is no information regarding the aspect ratio for Titanic 4K presentation. What I hope is that the movie won't be as bad as T2. that was plagued with DNR and an altered color timing.
@@spikewilliam aah, T2, so true. 😭 i hope they atleast release the extended cut of The Abyss on blu-ray because it needs more breathing room than DVD.
Like the Special Edition DVD where you could chooe between the Theatrical & the Extended cuts. @@shijoejoseph2011
i do hope that widescreen in jimmy's language is whole 16:9 and 1.78:1. as his previous movies bluray cover it will be mentioned if its going to be letterbox or widescreen 1.78:1
no, en imax se parecían más los errores de la pelicula, cosa que James Cameron no ha solucionado a pesar de los años, hay varios errores en secuencias, etc que se podrán corregir quizás para el 30 aniversario, ojalá
