    Hi friend, I watch many silk flower making tutorials, including somebana. The artisans only use normal scissors to cut the silk petals and then dip them in stiffening solution. Does that stiffening solution help to prevent fraying as well?

    • @embloome
      @embloome 8 днів тому

      Hello, thank you for your comment. I only have minimal experience in somebana and as far as I know, the stiffening solution (usually starchy liquid) only helps holding the flower petals' shapes, but it does not help much in terms of preventing the edges from fraying. The stiffened petals can withstand more abrasion than non-stiffened ones before fraying but I would not consider the stiffening solution the go-to for stopping the edges from fraying. Hope this helps. 😊

    Have you tried Heat Shrink Tubing? It comes in green as well, it might be simpler! Or plasti dip, but apparently the fumes are toxic so not sure about that. These are two methods that sewers use for finishing the ends of steel boning in corsets and structured bodices for gowns. The steel bones can be very sharp, and there's a lot pressure on the fabric when the wearer moves around so they have to work or it's a bit of a disaster. I haven't personally tried either though, so I'm only going off what other people have suggested.

    • @embloome
      @embloome 9 місяців тому

      Hi Katyb 😊 I have never thought about heat shrink tubing until you mentioned it! And I have never heard of plasti dip. I have made some corsets when I was at college but never had the chance to use metal boning, so I was never taught how to seal the ends of boning. What you have said is very interesting. Sounds like heat shrink tubing could be an easier solution since it doesn't give out toxic fumes. I will definitely keep that on my list of "To-Look-Intos". Thank you for the info, and thank you for taking the time to comment ❤️

      @katyb2793 9 місяців тому

      @@embloome you're welcome! I've been learning how to make a corset so this is on my to look into list for that too 😁 The heat shrink tubing is actually really cheap, something like a metre or 2 is only $5 Australian here, and I imagine you wouldn't need much per stem. Good luck!

    That’s great-if you have the money, but I just want to know how to iron with a normal iron. I found the parchment paper, helpful, as I was just going to use a tea towel.

    • @embloome
      @embloome 9 місяців тому

      Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment. 😊 I'm glad you found my suggestion useful. As for ironing flower petels with a normal iron, I haven't tried that yet because it seems a bit dangerous. 😅 If you don't want to spend the money on a soldering iron, I recommend blow-drying your petals on high heat with a regular hairdryer and shaping them with your hands. Obviously, this will not produce the same results as a soldering iron, but it could help in freshening up some petals if the fabric is thin enough. You should also wear a few pairs of gloves to avoid burning yourself. Now that you've mentioned it, I'd like to look into how to reshape petals with common household items! 😆

    I appreciate your 3 videos very much for the boutonnieres. I'll be making my own corsages, boutonnieres and bouquets for my upcoming wedding. I've done some floral crafts before, but this is a little more involved... I like the bow - it is pretty but not over the top for my needs. While my dress is very beautiful we are looking for simplicity (to save money), elegance, classic with a modern twist (but not trendy) and I really don't care for the rustic love of burlap, corn husks and dried brown things. It could be improved with easier ways to find the links to all 3 videos on each of those videos.

    • @embloome

      Hi Jennifer, Thank you so much for your kind words about my videos on boutonnieres. 😊 I am thrilled to hear that you found them helpful as you prepare for your upcoming wedding. It sounds like you have a clear vision for your wedding, and I am glad that the style of the boutonnieres resonates with your desire for simplicity, elegance, and a classic with a modern twist. I appreciate your feedback about the links to my videos, and I apologize for any difficulty you had in finding them. I will make sure to take your suggestion into account and improve the accessibility of the links in future videos. Best of luck with your wedding preparations, and congratulations on your upcoming nuptials! ❤️

    I use hot glue and then use a permanent marker in the matching color to paint over the glue. I’ve also used acrylic paint. Fingernail polish would be good if you had the right colors 💅🏻 🌿

      Hello Schmitt, thank you for sharing those helpful tips! 😄 I'm intrigued by the idea of using acrylic paint and nail varnish over hot glue - I'll have to give that a try myself sometime! I do have a slight concern about using permanent marker, though. I'm worried that it might rub off on fabric when the flowers are held against the body and potentially stain some pretty dresses. Have you had any experience with this issue that you could share? Thank you again for your insights!

    Where are you based? The online stores you showed in the video, which country are they from? I have some very old, but expensive silk flowers from the UK which are now falling apart. I hate waste and would like to fix them. Can you do some videos on that. The plastic is breaking in some places, flower heads are breaking off from the stem (as opposed to coming apart), petals are coming apart. I know, the usual advice will be to throw them away and buy new ones :), but I am no longer in the UK and where I live I can't find any natural looking flower for the love of money. Do you have any suggestions? I tried using super glue once, and it melted and broke the plastic off at the joints!

    • @embloome
      @embloome Рік тому

      Hi Anione. I am based in Hong Kong. The online stores which I have shown in the video were from Aliexpress. I believe they are based in China, like most of the silk flowers sellers on Amazon. Regarding your very old silk flowers, I would suggest giving the petals and leaves a quick wash in a bucket of warm diluted soapy water. (Test at a less noticeable spot first to see if the dye come off.) Once the dust and dirt got washed off, they will look 10 times better already! Rinse, pat dry and blow dry them. For fraying petals, you can fix them like how I did in my video (ua-cam.com/video/8bgePM-Grgo/v-deo.html). For putting the plastic bits back to gather, the hot glue gun is your best friend 😊 I would love to know how the repairing go. Should you have more questions, please feel free to leave them here 😉 And thank you for the video idea suggestion. I will certainly put that on my topic list. Cheers, Janet x

    • @Anione111
      @Anione111 Рік тому

      @@embloome Thank you, Janet, for the very useful tips. I have never used a glue gun, should get one, but don't know anything about them. Can I buy just any one? Your tips in the video about what to look for while buying artificial flowers were very good, but remember, many of us aren't lucky to have your artistic sensibility, but can tell when the end product isn't good, but only after making an expensive mistake 😁. Request you to do a few more videos with detailed buying guidelines, more examples, where to buy, tips on vases and arrangements, also how to put different flowers together, keeping cost/budgets in mind. Showing us many options. I have a 3 feet tall vase (a gift) that's kept on the floor, bight patterned glazed ceramic. I just cannot understand what to put in it that would look good or even if I should put anything in it? Its so hard without guidance. If I buy something and it looks bad, it will be such a waste. But the right option could make a statement!

    • @embloome
      @embloome Рік тому

      Hi Anione 😊 Thank you so much for your kind words and for taking the time to share your thoughts and suggestions. I'm glad to hear that you found my tips useful, and I appreciate your interest in learning more about artificial flowers and arrangements. Your feedback is invaluable, and I'll definitely keep your ideas in mind for future videos. As for the glue gun, I recommend getting one that can maintain a constant temperature and has a thin tip for better control over the glue volume. It's always a good idea to practice a bit before using it on your final project. Regarding where to buy silk flowers, I completely understand your concern and agree that it's important to be able to spot poor quality flowers to avoid making expensive mistakes. In my video 'How to shop for quality artificial flowers online', I've provided some guidelines to help evaluate the quality of the flowers you intend to buy, regardless of where you shop. If the flowers tick most of the boxes of being 'poor quality', then they may not be the best option for you, even if they are within your budget. As for your 3 feet tall vase, it would be difficult for me to make suggestions without seeing the vase and where you intend to place it. I'd be happy to discuss this further with you, so feel free to DM me on Instagram (@embloome). Thank you again for your support and feedback, and I look forward to connecting with you soon. Have a wonderful day!"

    Thank you for your pleasant personable and careful instruction. I have been making real and faux florals for many years I am self trained so thought it would be nice to watch videos that go back to the basics from someone that has been in the business and can share new ideas as well. I also feel like it is important to research videos that I can share with others in my family as I am getting older and no longer run a business.

      Hiya Ebony 😊 I would love to be able to give you a list of shop names that good quality silk flowers locally in the UK but unfortunately I don't have one. I would say your best bet would be following the guidelines that I have mentioned in the video. Keep your eyes peeled and remember expensive not necessarily = great quality. I wish you the best of luck for finding products that work well for your project. I would love to hear from you about the display that you do and silk flowers shops that you have come across. Cheers, Janet x
