Sealed Spec Miata Thunderhill Personal Best 2:10.686
Not a great lap:
- T1 wasn't fully committed
- I can get in a bit deeper at T2 while trailing off the brakes
- Got a bit of rear slip near the middle of T3
- I can get in deeper at T5 and do better flicking rear out before the apex
- I should have dropped a wheel a bit off track on the right to hook in the corner
- T6 was at the limit but a bit scruffy with the initial rotation and early turn-in
- I needed a smoother turn in at T8 to avoid scrubbing off speed
- T9 was surprisingly OK
- T10 was at the limit
- Needed a slight lift at T11 which was not ideal
- Annnd I completely botched T14 🤦‍♂️
With all of that, I was still 3 tenths faster than earlier this season.

Landscaping at Thunderhill Raceway - Spec Miata Race

I made a pretty dumb mistake going into T6 on the 2nd lap of this qualifying sprint race. My foot got caught under the throttle pedal after mashing the brakes to rotate the car. Looking at my side mirror, I also kissed the dirt with my rear right tire. Needless to say, I took this great opportunity to help Thunderhill take care of some landscaping. The rest of this race was just me cutting thro...

Dust. Dust everywhere. I had a good start and got to take advantage of some chaos at T10 with two drivers getting tangled up and others scattering out of the way. A hard drive caught me up with Ross in the #2 car who appeared to have made a mistake at T3 near the tail end of the race. I made a Mika Hakkinen inspired pass on the exit of T1 to split a back marker and got the pass done on the #2 c...

I had fun with this drive even though the grid was setup pretty silly. Rules were changed at some point during the season to grid SMTs ahead of SSMs, regardless if an SSM driver was seconds faster than an SMT. So putting in time that had me P12 during practice that morning, I got to start P30-something 🤦‍♂️ I could have pulled off with the other quick drivers to try and stay in the draft, but I...

Last race of the season and it ended with a bang(s). Nothing I could have done about that one. The driver in white car with the red circle that passes me early on caused a huge pile up at T5. With no yellows waving, I crested the hill and had no time to react to the car sitting directly below, out of sight. Going 40mph and hitting a stationary car isn't much fun. The driver behind me also had n...

On looking back at the video the gauge dropped to 0 on the first lap going into turn 6 but I ran for another ~15 minutes before I noticed (oops). I too want more from the data. Just looking at a bullseye of the G forces on the data overlay of my videos doesn't do anything for me. The Catalyst screenshot you show at 30 seconds into this video is something I cannot find. I can't find any hard data for lateral G's. Where did the graphs come from? Garmin's documentation and help videos are so lacking and crude as to almost be a joke.

    • @DanielKulas
      @DanielKulas 5 місяців тому

      At 30 seconds, It's from their mobile app on my tablet, www.garmin.com/en-US/p/892305 There's a sync button on the the Catalyst's homepage. If you create an account with Garmin, it uploads it to their servers and with their app, you can download your sessions to your phone/tablet to view those graphs. They don't provide raw numbers you can export to a file or anything like that, which is why I made this tool. I don't know why they want to keep your raw data hidden from you. It's pretty dumb.

      ha Maybe they had bad experiences with people trying to drive fast but running out of talent. I never had a problem with them about it the two times I went. The handling and feel are unmatched from the handful of road cars I raced.

    • @TheTReed78

      @@DanielKulas They're a blast once you get moving. The talent side of things is definitely a concern, this is why its important to teach your students what they'll actually experience on the race track. Its a "racing school" not hpde school is the way i look at it. Anyone that got their cert there and then dove right into wheel to wheel racing would be totally unprepared.

    • @DanielKulas

      @@TheTReed78 totally agree. I question how many people that attend these things actually go on to race though. It feels like most are there to scratch off a line on their bucket list. I don’t have a problem with that but it’d be nice if they’d have a run group for those driving like they’re out for a Sunday cruise and a group for those that want to learn the racing part. Passing exercises, practice starts, closely following another driver, which I found surprisingly difficult, defending, etc. I wonder how other schools do things.

I talked to a friend who's an instructor and he said a school like Skip Barber, or Level Up at Road America is completely different. I watched your video - nice laps. I did the 3 day in 2021 so it's a distant memory, but I recall it being a lot like any other sort of classroom session at an HDPE, or stuff my SCCA club puts on. It lacked of lot of nuance but I get the need to not overwhelm. They didn't really dwell into the "racing" part of the racing school, but I found when I did this 1 day, talking with the instructors 1-on-1 about race craft was really useful.

    • @TheTReed78
      @TheTReed78 6 місяців тому

      @@DanielKulas thanks! yea i felt the same. ZERO racecaft, zero useful drills in real racings situations, zero accident avoidance drills, etc, its was just the basics which as a sim racer for 10 years wasn't useful. The one on one with the coach was in fact useful especially for turn 2 and i found myself taking their advice and getting faster. To my shock the coach i had after one session hadn't even driven the car before! You'd think that would be a qualifier for the job, so bizarre... It was more of a series of glorified extremely expensive track days imo, but either way got the cert, and doing about 2-3 events this year in a Rush SR. Car comes in June, can't wait.

      @@TheTReed78 I did a skip barber school back in 2016 and it was the same thing. A track day with a bunch of people who didn’t feel comfortable on a racetrack lol The instructors I had with this school were also a mix of actual drivers, one a current Mx-5 cup driver, a former Indy car driver, one LMP3 driver, but I remember there being a sim racer or two, which I didn’t care to hear their opinions or perspectives. I think the problem with running an actual race problem ultimately comes down to insurance. These are businesses that deals with liabilities and you know there’s going to be someone who doesn’t understand the risks and wants to sue for something dumb. There are always people completely off the pace at these things. For actual race craft you’re better off finding a competent coach for one on one help, though they can be expensive from what I hear.
