The Old Church (aka Plague or Poldark) Holcombe - Somerset
The Church of St. Andrew close to Downside Abbey in Holcombe, Somerset, England has late Saxon-early Norman origins and was rebuilt in the 16th century.
It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II* listed building, and is a redundant church in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust.
It was vested in the Trust on 1 August 1987.
The old church on the site was consecrated by Archbishop Wrotard of York in 928.
The church has a two-stage tower and two-bay nave.
The interior includes late Georgian box pews and a Jacobean pulpit.
In the graveyard is a memorial to the family of Robert Falcon Scott whose father managed the brewery in the village.
There is also a yew tree that is thought to be about 1500 years old.
The original medieval village was buried at the time of the plague and St Andrews is surrounded by the mounds that bear testimony to this burial.
The parish is part of the benefice of Coleford with Holcombe within the Midsomer Norton deanery
It was also used for filming in Poldark.
See my other videos for a look around the outside.

Cley Hill.. one of Wiltshire's mysterious locations and an alleged UFO hotspot as well as having a legend involving the devil. Several witnesses have reported seeing large burning fires on the hills, with figures dancing around them, talking and singing loudly in an unrecognised language. Grabbed by the Worleggans 😬
Hey, thanks for watching, if anyone can advise how to get this video so it fits the screen properly, please let me know.. I am learning video making and editing, as you can tell!!
I helped repair the Church after some "ethnic minorities" stole the lead off the roof. We replaced it with stainless steel. Being a redundant church, no one noticed it was gone until the rain had got in and damaged all the timbers, even the bell rope had dry rot fungus growing on it. The mound at the front of the church was being cut into by the farmer's plough, bones were sticking out. Don't touch them as the plague still survives in the soil.
Oh gosh! that sounds bad, are you local then?
