DC4818 & DBR1254 Trek the Trunk - GVR's East & West Rail Tour 2024
Over 10 days in November of 2024, the Glenbrook Vintage Railway have been busy operating their 'East & West Rail Tour'. The tour begins in Glenbrook, before heading down to the Ruapehu, Manawatu, Hawkes Bay, and Taranaki regions.
This trip marked the first time that DC4818 operated a mainline excursion train in it's preservation life, the locomotive was paired up with running mate DBR1254 for the trip, being the first time that two MKII Diesel-Electrics have run on the national rail network together.
DC4818 was purchased by the GVR in 2019, and begun the long process of being restored to mainline condition. In October of 2024, the locomotive was completed for mainline running. DBR1254 was purchased by the GVR in 2017, and was completed in 2020.
A big thanks to the team at the Glenbrook Vintage Railway for the large amount of effort put into restoring and maintaining not just 4818, but the rest of the fleet. Your work does not go unnoticed.
Enjoy!

Just curious why were they allowed to run long hood leading but KR are not?
Mainline long hood leading being banned is a bit of a misleading notion - it is simply just a KiwiRail policy, and does not apply to other mainline operators. (such as GVR, Dunedin Railways, AT, or Metlink.) Long hood leading has continued to prove itself as a safe practice for decades, but in today's Zero Harm Health & Safety world, it only takes one incident for strict regulations to be put in place...
@TheKiwianTrainspotting sweet thank you for explaining
Owned by a private owner and stored at a steel mill in Auckland with DA 1429 which seriously need a home. Who could take both DC 4421 and DA 1429 in for preservation?
Nice restore job. Pity they didn't leave the knuckle couplers on them.
Won't be long before a Dx is added to the heritage fleet
I like the shot at Buckland. Thanks for uploading ;)
I remember riding behind 4818 a few times during her Auckland subbie days.
heres DC4818 hauling freight ua-cam.com/video/ZCM5ruqfZIY/v-deo.html here DC4818 on subbie duty in Auckland ua-cam.com/video/-tHBJ2TkVBA/v-deo.html
Ive never riden it behind when it was still operating with the SA sets, maybe in the future I will ride it on an excursion train someday.
Awesome job great work Glenbrook Vintage Railway DC 4818 looking good with fresh new paint 👍
Glad you enjoyed it!
Nice! GVR did a wonderful job.
Absolutely!
Nice too see it running again
And was this today
I like the final scene, with two Ww locomotives in steam, each doing its own work. Nice.
fantastic video. kevin
Awesome photos 😊
Nice video mate 😉
Hi - I'm wondering how I go about getting permission to use some of your video for a project I'm putting together - let me know how I can get in touch, if that is something you'd be open to! (I can delete this comment if you'd rather not)
@Zavaroe2 No worries, I'm happy to let you use some footage. Yeah, any way for contact is fine for me
Single Cabin locomotive manufacture from General Electric or Progress Rail ?
nice video when do you think you will be going back to motat
Also do you have to ask permission to go to parts of the line?
Yes. I had permission to access some parts of the line during this video.
Fantastic video I love Glenbrook steam
When was this film ? They both are currently getting refurbished
That viaduct shot and high speed run by are great! Nicely done!
Now that is really a cool video! Subbed.
Thank you!! 😊
Beautiful video
Thanks!
Maybe it's the smaller size of tracks and rolling stock, but all these trains looked like they were flying! I guess 60kph on cape gauge probably feels like 60mph on standard gauge. I'd love to come down to NZ and chase trains, it's a unique and fascinating system you guys have down there.!
how do you know the trains origin and destination?
Copy of the NIMTP from the New Zealand Locomotives Facebook group.
Awesome
Thanks Tyler!
I love the tank engine shown here!
Its great to see black smoke only, a great fireman , very good to see .
Nice one Riki
Thanks Gabe! 😊
Its typical that when Ww644 has a mainline cert, Auckland is undergoing extensive maintenance on its network. I'm guessing that's the reason there weren't any runs out around here this summer.
First clip was very good man I miss steam down here on the main... good video mate....
Thank you!

You've chosen some great locations & some new ones( 252 arriving at Pulp Mill). It's a shame digital cameras( non movie). can be so noisy. Apart from that, another fine production.
Thank you! I try to be as original as I can with spots, for the the digital camera shutter noise, I try and keep it to a minimum. Cheers! 😄
@@MBTrainspotting I saw you at Mangaweka & southern end of Bunnythorpe Dip. :-) Id been up to Waiouru that day and videoed 225 a couple of times
A will put together video, I injoyed it 😊

the Leslie RS5Ts in NZ are HORRIBLE (No offence) Anyway nice video, a little love from Australia.
They're RS2M's, not RS5T's.
Awesome video mate!
Thanks!
Great Video! Just found your channel on UA-cam. I just purchased the Panasonic hc-x1500 to record train videos with. Do you do any color grading to your videos or do you record your videos in full auto mode? I am totally new to the Panasonic hc-x1500 camcorder and am curious as to what settings I need to use. Do you use a certain picture profile or have a favorite picture profile you record trains with? Thank you for any information you provide.
Hi there, I slightly colour grade all my clips, I currently record all my videos on full auto, but I am looking at switching to manual - I currently am using 4k60p at 200mbs, I don't have a certain picture profile currently. Good luck with your filming! - Hope this helped.😄
Awesome 👍
Thanks 🤗
Thank you for uploading this video!
No problems! Hope you enjoyed
When did they do run bys??
A photo run at Shakespeare Road is a part of the normal running days starting from the beginning of the 2023-2024 operating season.
