Where's The Footfall In Morley Market?
There isn't a store i would like to see back on the high street more than this one. I can live with the missing S if can have the same red lettering, themes and store products.
Why did it close?
the buried side of Gildersome tunnel i think the first 500 yards is fully filled in and where air shaft 4 was is a retaining wall
It could be heard throughout the valley. We lived in Scout Hill (we could see the mill) and could easily hear it inside the house. As children, we would listen for it while laid in bed.
Hi Mark, there’s another point of interest if you care to venture into Gildersome Spur again. If you walk down the side of the EV cargo building, you will come to a point where the path narrows and drops down. Just there, there is a collection of old bricks and large stones. These would be a fairly short distance from Gildersome station, where you started off. I reckon they are the remains of a demolished bridge of the line from Gildersome to Morley Top station. Shortly after, to the east, the line would have crossed the M621, not that it was there, but you know what I mean! Have a wander down some time. Dave, (not Pamela, I’m using her iPad)!
We miss you brother praying for your safe return
I've been in before. It is very deep water and there are rooms in there. It ends about 7 miles I when it gets blocked off
My great Gran at 3:59 in the middle. Great video.
Used to go to mathers and cravens for fishing tackle
Looks spot on that
I used to go to the swimming club I think it was on a Tuesday a Thursday evening not sure which day it had 2 pools you went down some steps to the other pool which had some diving boards in it there was a balcony on the main pool with changing rooms
I'm a Cadamateri descent. Id love to find out more info about Caddys
7:34 THE LONG BUILDING IN FRONT OF YOU THAT WAS THE CLUB AND INSTITUTE CLUB ON OATES STREET MY SISTER HAD THE RECEPTION THERE WHEN SHE GOT MARRIED I USED TO GO INTO THE BIN LID PLAY ON VIDEO GAMES AND FRUIT MACHINES
Very interesting - thank you for posting!!
I used to hate reversing down that steep underground ramp to deliver to Woolworths
Our beautiful county at its very best ❤️🔥 We had so much to be proud of... And it's been given away. Tragic.
It seems to me that it was quite some time after the Clean Air Act before the sandblasting of buildings began. My recollection is that most West Riding stone buildings were black right through the sixties and probably into the mid-seventies.
Oh yeah I remember the town hall being done in the 80s
dont forget the branch line from wakefield to ardsley then left to bradford via morley top to bradford
Yes I've covered Morley top but want to follow the line more closely.
All our good farm land is getting turned into gas stations an dollar general an strip mail that sit empty. About same 🤔
The world is f#cked
A fascinating glimpse at local Yorkshire history, by the excellent Blue Harvest History Channel.
Thank you for watching 👍🏻

I am now 87 yrs of age. I was born at MorleymHall, and lived in Morley until 1959 when i was married, Before i was married i lived in New street which was almost opposite Watson Bros.Mill.i worked there with my Dad,this was at the bottom of Fountain street. My late teens were spent dancing every Saturday at Morley town hall. HAPPY DAYS.😅😅😅
Thank you so much for your memories
Spent many a time in caddys as a kid good times when dewsbury was thriving and not the hole it is now
if only we had more people with pride for our town like you sir. keep doing you.
I will. Thank you
That’s a kind thing to say, I’m so glad Mark filmed my tour as I’m the only person that doesn’t get to see it as I’m the person doing it. I have some great ideas for next years tours Please do keep your eyes peeled for the Beeline & Memory Lane your next year
@simonreedproductions looking forward to it
Thank you for sharing. I really wanted to attend but something came up. Another time hopefully.
We need more things like this in the town.
This is the fourth year I’ve done these tours for heritage open days, please keep your eyes peeled for the tours next year, it’s free and takes around an hour :)
🐺 😘
I was born and bred in Batley in the 50s, our big treat was going to Caddies on a Saturday, fabulous ice cream.
Caddy's was special
Looks like there's plenty of empty homes ? Ideal for when the dinghy invasion arrives !?
I didn't get a notification for this! It's not the only building that's commuted around the place, the Shakespeare pub on Fountain St started its life in Chester and was moved to Manchester brick by brick. From the woodcut of the Welly you showed, it looks as though a spectacle maker also had a workshop on the premises. It's a pity that it had to be moved because of safety issues after the bomb but it's still around and that's the important thing. ✌️
Did tell you 😆
Good video, need to sort your sound out though
Yeah thanks, nobody said anything. Kinda phoned it in on this (sound joke).
Thanks for sharing. I enjoyed the trip down your city very much.
Thank you for coming along
This is an Aladins Cave, when I'm visiting I spend many minutes wondering through this shop. Stuff you would not find anywhere else.
It's like a time machine
🌽 corn?
Yes
Another fascinating, mini history video, on the first Leeds Corn Market, by the excellent Blue Harvest History Channel.
Thank you
Excellent, love a bit of liquorice and those old sherbert/liquorice dip sticks.
I'd eat the sherbet and throw the liquorice away...
beautiful building if it was cleaned up to it's former glory
Most people don't know it's history.
@Bhh2 even though its wetherspoons I love the Lion and Albert Story as well. Pity the other floors are going to waste.
Picture no7 Branch Road Batley was home to the Salvation Army between 1881 and 1983 when it moved to Bradford Road. You can just make out part of the Salvation Army on the stone over the entrance. I think the building you're talking about was down St James street on the right.
Are you thinking of the Victoria Hall cinema?
@@Bhh2 No I have a map from 1905 and there is a Theatre Royal on St James street on the right going down. The building in your photo is down as the Salvation Army Barracks.
I think the days of small independently run local cinemas are well and truly behind us unless there's some kind of very specific global disaster that only destroys Cineplexes.
We have a few but they're for local people
B.i.n.g.o. an bongo went the cinema hall💪🚬🤠
These tastes very bad
A matter of taste
If you visit the piece hall take a look in the library. it's new in there and has been built around the spire which now comes out through a glass roof. And the a lovely rose window in there. It's clever how they have married new and original
Thank you I'll take more time next visit
13:15 the woods is said to be private property from what I’ve been told by the dirt bmx riders who built the track you saw entering the woods
They said the owner gave them permission and that the owner doesn’t care to do anything with the woods
Thank you. I did say that it's private around the tunnel and I was trying to get as close as possible to send the drone but by accident I stumbled upon it.
Caddy's was the best. 1 shilling and thruppence for a gra pefruit pop with a scoop of icecream. Was a Saturday treat
Friday after school for me
Tried one once, disgusting. Almost as bad as sucking on a fisherman's friend.
How much sugar in each pie ?
A lot
@@Bhh2 Just had a quick look. Roughly about this much ua-cam.com/video/Uk0P5_KftHs/v-deo.html

I think you might find that these “empty” listed buildings are actually infested with sinister foreign types who are slowly but surely destroying what is left of our town.
Tell Kirklees
Grew up in Dewsbury Caddy’s was lovely ice cream there was also Crossleys in Ravensthorpe who had an ice cream van that came round the streets and who remembers Cider Lolly’s
Loved cider lollies but Dracula lollies were my favourite
18:33 What was the word, please? Was it SAX ?
Tax
@@Bhh2 Ah of course. That makes more sense (daft me). Thank you very much & what a brilliant video. Thanks for sharing 👍🏼
When did it finally close ?
I'd say early 80s. I've a picture of a newspaper clipping somewhere.
I do have a vague recollection of going with my grandparents when I was a kid . Closed with the redevelopment of the princess of Wales shopping centre then ?
@andrewormerod2780 yep but they closed down before the development.
Thanks for sharing your Monopoly Takeover adventure in Leeds, Marc. Fun, entertaining and informative! :)
Cheers mate 👍🏻
