Wild camping at Lints Tor Dartmoor via Rattlebrook Railway #camping #wildcamping
Starting at Dartmoor Inn car park we follow the River Lyd to the start of the Rattlebrook Peat Railway following the railway over Great Nodden before hiking down to Vellake Corner and crossing the bridge over the West Okement River where we head through Black-a-Tor copse and long the West Okement River filling our water bottles near Sandy Ford before heading up to Lints Tor to wild camp for the night.
In the morning in the claggy rain we cross over the West Okement River getting slightly wet feet before heading up the steep west side of the valley to Steng-a-Tor before visiting the new memorial stone for the crashed USNAF PB4Y-1 Liberator that has been erected since we last visited the crash site. After finding Kitty Tor we head to the Rattlebrook Peat Works and follow from the top of the Rattlebrook Railway back to the Dartmoor Inn.

Loved the vid, exciting stuff. I have a similar tent and I actually find putting the porch area into the wind is far better. As you said towards the end the angled foot if pitched into the wind does collapse in on your feet. If the entrance is into the wind the flat front of the inner tent stays upright. A tent of this quality will still stand even if the door area is into the wind. Also Hilleberg say to do it this way lol😂 so that's good enough for me. It's something to do with how the wind hits the front then slides over the ever decreasing hight of the rest of the tent. I'm off to watch some more of your vids now. Cheers.
Many, many, many thanks for the editing work on the transcription ! The only other one that I know of on YT, who also generously takes the time to do that, is David of the excellent channel Cruising the Cut. So precious for the non-natives ! Keep up the good work, and the good times of course ! Cheers from France.
Some dnb producer really needs to sample that “it’s like being in a tumble dryer with drum and bass playing” LOVE IT!😂
You won't be getting much sleep
Walked up steeperton on ten tors. I know what you have been through it is knackering
I thought I heard Michael Jackson in the background as there was a lot of Aow noises
That's not a tent, it is a glorified bivvy bag.
The best wild camp double act bar none. Nice one lads
You have not had a new video out for some time hope you all are okay hope to see you soon back out soon 👍
Ever tried double polling the side pole to make the side as strong as the ends?
WHich do you think is more secure, a delta peg or double pegging?
A 2 man (geodesic) tunnel tent I had was the tarra. The inside space doesnt get effected in high winds.
Had a soulo but prefer the Akto as lighter, very simple to setup with 1 pole, bigger porch. In bad weather can make it bombroof by adding just 1 more pole and a few guylines.
Every hilwalking youtuber takes cans of beer with them, must be essential. I assume it is to rehydrate your meal if can't find water , or to bribe a ranger with if you get caught illegally camping. Drinking all that beer you will need to pee, so can use the empty can in a storm instead of going out into the bad weather, just make sure you remember which cans contain beer though.
Scafell is excellent for money
That's it. Keep the place tidy at all times. Just incase someone approaches you then they know you're respecting the land.

Hi. AWESOME. AMAZING. SCENERIES. LANDSCAPE. CAMPING.
I think its just down to common sense. If its lads like us that enjoy our island the right way, leave no trace and not just a bunch of bellends that have bought a tent for £20, got a load of beer and no intention of taking it back with them.
Hi. LIKE. LIKE. SCENERIES. LANDSCAPE. CAMPING.

Hello, Thanks buddy 👍
HELLO.
Hello 👍
Great to see you guys out on the moor again. Proper Dartmoor weather too, none of that sunshine rubbish. 🤣 ATB, John.
Hi John, was good to be back up on the moor again TBF, the weather dose not know what it is doing right now lol. But the way back to the car was proper Dartmoor weather for sure 😂. ATB Phil & Alan
cracking adventure! typical dartmoor weather as usual, lol, but nice to see yr tent holding up well there. Might be worth investing in some hiking poles, you be surprised how useful they are, i can imagine walking on the moors without them, countless time saved my ass....great vid as ever..ATB WJ
Hi ya Jay, was a good little plod around the train line for sure, and yea great weather in the morn 🙄. The tent is so much better now, them 2 points made a wold of difference 👍👌👍. Got some poles, only cheep jobbers, will defo be using them when we do the Perambulation Trail or attempt it lol. We have bike packing bags now Jay 😎 be riding on the moor soon 🚲🚲. ATB Alan & Phil
Happy Days 😊! Onwards and upwards 👍. Can’t wait to watch this one later guys! Thanks for posting a new video 😎. Cheers Pete
Your welcome Pete👍 , get on home have a beer and enjoy 🍺😎🍺
Hi Alan & Phil, got that cold Jail Ale out of the fridge and enjoyed it watching your latest instalment. Always great to see you back on the Moor of the Dart😊. Clag, bog and lots of laughs - what more could you ask for! To be fair, the route you took is always boggy except in the high summer after weeks of dry weather. I bet you’re itching to get those bikes out on the moors and give #wandering jay a run for his money going for the yellow jersey! Anyway peeps, that was a Thursday treat for sure 👌. I’ll be out on the moors myself on Saturday so if I see any mountain bikes stuck in bogs, hopefully you haven’t gone to meet the underneath people! Thanks again guys, onwards and upwards. Cheers Pete👍🍺
Hello Pete, get your cold Jail Ale out 😎🍺😎. Yea that was a boggy mess up there but least I did not go underground with the underground people lol 🙏. TBF we got a fair bit planned for this summer if all goes well, got all the bags for bikes and ready to rock 💪. Hope you have a good old stomp on Saturday Pete think the weather is looking good, well fingers 🤞. Glad you enjoyed Thursdays instalment lots more coming soon. Onwards and Upwards ATB Alan & Phil
Hello Phil & Alan, just checking in and wishing you well. Hope you’ve had a great summer so far and have been able to get and about enjoying the great outdoors 😊. I’ve been missing your video’s over the past month or so. You’re one of the best UA-camrs on Dartmoor and it’s so good to watch your latest and greatest! Take care chaps and 🤞to hear from you soon! Many thanks as always. Cheers Pete 👍
@@paf210767 Hi Pete! Thanks for the kind words, hope all is well with you! Yea we're all good and out enjoying the sun! We've taken a bit of a step back from UA-cam as it takes so much time and effort with filming & editing that it had taken over a bit instead of camping and relaxing. To be honest we started the channel for fun and we we're just not having fun any more as it started to feel more a non-paying job that we didn't want! We'll be back at some point though! It's just a hiatus while we reset but going forward we probably won't be making as many videos. Thanks again Pete! ATB Alan & Phil 👍
Hi Alan & Phil, really enjoyed your latest SWCP instalment and once again you capture some great scenery and, well, your banter just makes me crack up lol! 😂Great to see you got a good fix to your tent Phil, are you sure they didn't send a couple of crates of Thatcher's with the £40? 🍺🤔🤣 I'm sure your next trip to the beautiful moor of the Dart will be a great test for it! I reckon that car in the evening was a couple of locals looking for some dogging company 😂😂, you did well to keep hidden and stealthy 😬! I hope you've both got one of those e-bikes for your first tour of Dartmoor! I do a lot of road cycling around West Dartmoor and you're grateful for that 22nd gear at some points 🥵. Love the idea of your perambulation - look forward to watching that one! Anyway peeps, onwards and upwards. Happy Days. Cheers Pete 👍
Hello Pete, Getting in to the SWCP at the moment its got so much to offer, but we will be heading back up the Moor of the Dart next camp for sure. They should of sent some Cider for that price Pete lol 🤣, get back in the clag and wind, see if it's done the job 👍. There would be no banter if they were looking for dogging company 🤣👊🤣. Just got the standard MTB's but they quite trick tbf, I have not been out for ages, so will defo feel it the first few times. Just ordered up some bike packing bags so should be out soon on the bikes for the first instalment of bike packing wild camping 👍😎👍. We have a go go go on the Perambulation walk, just got to get the time and weather right. Thanks for watching Pete Onwards and Upwards Phil & Alan
@@apoutdoorsuk Happy Days! 😎👍
hey guys, nice diff camp, on my bucket list to do the SWCP, might do some of it this summer instead of dartmoor. yer that vehicle a bit weird, but didnt bother you, so meh. talking of bikepacking, i was watching border rambler do some bikepacking, looking at his strava, i did more elevation in 10 miles than he did in 3 days!, yer, gotta get off these moors, lol..great as ever..ATB WJ
Hey Jay! We haven't been to Dartmoor in a while and were thinking of doing the Perambulation over this bank holiday weekend but the weather looks iffy so going to postpone that I think! Did you more or less follow cycle route 28 and then the 27 from Okehampton? We'll have to get down there at some point but you do make it sound hilly!! ATB Alan & Phil 👍
@@apoutdoorsuk funny you should mention the perambulation, was planning to do it this weekend too, might start fri, miss the worse of the weather on mon, not sure yet yer route 28 then ontot he 27, really hilly from moreton to oke, 2000ft of elevation in 10 miles or so, too much for me, prob why ppl ride road bikes on the main rds as prob best gradiant tbh, i didnt see a single cyclist til i hit oke. hoping to get a bike rack for the car so dont have to ride from home, lol
@WanderingJay Yea that is a lot of climbing! We do have a couple of those Thule 591 roof bars but it's quite a pain to get bikes on/off them! We just put bikes in the car these days! There was also an incident where we hit a height barrier on a car park and damaged the car roof! oops Good luck with the perambulation 👍
Hi, I walked from Kimmeridge to Lulworth and back the same day and you brought back the memories of it,over twenty five years ago.thoes people were vermin shooting
Hi, Yea its a lovely walk around there, glad to bring the memories back 😎. We did think shooting as the spot light, but never know now lol. ATB 👍
Nice
Thanks Buddy 👍😎👍
I've been "caught " twice, told I was not allowed to camp and then had a nice chat about the weather. Then left alone to camp. The rangers are not daft.
Thanks for watching! Yes the ranger was super nice! We did wonder if he was feeling us out and after he checked on the radio he never came back! Do you know the lights when looking across the bay in west direction? There’s a line of lights do you know if they’re on Bindon Range? Think they’re around Black Rock location? We couldn’t decide what they were! Thanks again for watching! ATB Alan & Phil 👍
Haha I met the rangers there too, they said go for it everyone else does lol, they were sound!
Maybe we just had a new guy? He wasn’t sure he could let us stay and checked on his radio! But he was super nice about it! We’d probably pick a more discreet location next time though! ATB 👍
@@apoutdoorsuk na I was camped right in the most conspicuous spot goin lol, check my jurassic coast vid it's the thumbnail. They were lovely, gave me some plasters too 🤣 the beauty of that Bay is once they lock up, you can only access on foot or by sea, no one to see us or complain. The boaters often have fires on the beach 😉
You need to re-read the sign! Made 11th October 1978 and came into operation 10th November 1978! Month later! Shame about the swearing! Spoils an otherwise good video.
Well spotted! It was actually spotted before posting but Alan didn't think anybody would notice! Well we are who we are, warts and all. You're obviously entitled to your opinion but fortunately there are plenty of UA-camrs to choose from. ATB 👍
Hi lads, prodding donkey's, poking sheep and a lovely place to walk and camp for a night, keep on camping and having fun.
lol was a good laugh, some hidden gems on the S.W.C for sure. ATB APoutdoorsUK
Man this is just gorgeous upload, trail is just fantastic. These landscapes are perfect for hiking and exploring!
Thank you for the kind words, was a great camp and place to be 😎
People enjoying our beautiful countryside, whatever next? Sounds like a sensible chap, good man. Thanks for not prodding and poking anything dangerous, onwards and upwards to another great video.
Yea he was s good man, I guess he gets it all the time, and just has to weigh it up. No poking dangerous looking things this time 😁. ATB Onwards & Upwards
Hello Alan & Phil 😊. That was a wild and windy one chaps! I reckon Alan should have taken that hat left on the gate post you passed on your way?😂 Just as well the wind was up in the evening after your Madras, plus the extra spicy Mexican rice eh Phil! 😂 Bit of a twitchy sphincter moment with the Ranger turning up like that 😮 Fair play they’re all good guys and do the right thing. Respect both ways really when you leave no trace. It is what it is! Anyway peeps, thanks for posting another video, and until the next time, onwards and upwards 😊. Cheers Pete 👍
Hi ya Pete, the wind on the edge of the coast path was blowing well for sure. Alan lost his hat after the Madras and spicy Mexican rise 🤣😁🤣. Was a bit of a twitchy bum moment TBF, waited ages for everyone to go before setting up then Ranger turns up 🙄🥴🙄. It was all good in the end, no fires no rubbish no problem 👍. Your welcome for the video Pete ATB Onwards & Upwards Phil & Alan 👍
I really enjoyed this video, have a great weekend when it comes debs xx....
Hi ya, thank you glad you liked the video. Should be a good weekend as off out camping👍😊👍 Have a great weekend debs xx ATB Alan & Phil
Omg way to much snobbery going on in this snobbish video, such snobby boys. Snobs. 😄 have I said it in enough different ways yet???
Snobby Snobbish Snobs we are indeed 🤣😁🤣
Great video. We were out on Dartmoor the same night was very cold
Thanks buddy, where were you camping? and yes it was a freezing wind chill for sure 🥶
We camped at the bottom of lints tor. I think we saw you walking in the morning.
Ah yes sorry mate, we met again at Black-a-Tor Copse 👍
Atmospheric with the cloud. Nice to get out in the fresh air
yea for sure mate, always out and about doing something best way to be 👌
Thanks for another great trip guys. Packing in all sorts of Devon weather recently 🌂. Cheers onwards and upwards
Thanks for watching buddy, glad you enjoyed our little adventure. Not so good when the weather turns, but always fun 👍 Onwards & Upwards ATB Alan & Phil
As always a fantastic video hope to be on the moor this Saturday night 👍
Thanks mate, hope the weather is a bit better for you 👍👌👍
Not real snobs either of you. Because of you were, you'd have hiked up there in tacticool gear and built your own shelter bushcraft-stylee from the available resources. *At least that's the jig I get from other channels I've watched over the years. Shame on ya. Pfffft. 🙄😉
(PS: this is a joke, by the way. Dinnae block me.)
Haha we wouldn't block you we have a sense of humor really! 😉 Don't know if you've annoyed the UA-cam overlords but we didn't get any notification for your message btw! Ah we had an incident, there was lots of blood and now only Alan is allowed to use an axe so we take our own shelter these days!! Thanks for watching ATB Alan & Phil 👍
wonderful videos, many thanks, blessed greetings from Upper Bavaria Pura Vida Namaste Jucheeeiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii
Thank you for the kind words 👍👌👍
Enjoyed that ! New sub here 👍🏻🏕
Thanks buddy, Glad you enjoyed it. was a bit wet and claggy but all fun 👍 ATB
Well chaps, you were blessed with better weather on your last couple of adventures, so as it's the moor of the Dart, the clag had to return 😊! Looks like Alan got the better spot to pitch up on Phil, or was it a precaution to be upstream given you were on a spicy Madras for tea 🤣?! But, you defo gained on the bartering stakes, some peanuts for a can of cider - Happy Days 🍺😂Oh, maybe a thought Phil, about Alan's damp trousers, maybe when you were out with a call of nature in the middle of the night, and the wind.....maybe not! 😂🤔. Fair play though guys for getting out for an overnighter when rain/fog/clag was forecast, and for the entertainment as always. Anyway, peeps. onwards and upwards until next time. Cheers Pete 👍
Ha ha, the clag is always looming on the moor of the dart Pete 🌨🌨. I went a tad overboard with the sauce tbf 🥴 but it was nice. Alans spot was a good un actually, tucked away quite nicely so he was 😎. Yea for once I had to get out the tent to do the deal, as I normally make Alan get out for the peanuts 😂🤣😂 but like you say it was worth it for the Cider. We shall fix up the wind jobber Pete and get back out on the moor of the dart in a storm soon, get some real entertainment going on 🌨🌪🌨👍. Thanks Pete, Onwards & Upwards Happy Days Phil & Alan
You two did look frozen up there😂worth buying some hand warmers😂 Also just a suggestion but perhaps buy some foil insulation and make yerself some thermal covers for yer gas canisters, battery packs etc. Anyway nice videos guys. Cheers.
Haha yea it was freezing! Heard good things about the zippo hand warmers they apparently last hours but we’ve never tried them. That’s not a bad idea about the batteries though! The GoPro batteries do not like the cold at all! Maybe even just putting batteries in an thermo pocket insulated food pouch things would work? We might have to give that a try! Thanks for watching ATB Alan & Phil 👍
Why shouldnt you buy the best you can afford for yer no 1 hobby. strange thing is if you were cycling or photogrsphers or something nobody would bat an eyelid if you spent thousands on a bike or camara equipment etc. Anyway somebody is obviously envious of you lol 😂 Perhaps you should hsve taken some wine or champaign on this camp with yer. 😂🍷🍷
Funnily enough Alan sold his fancy carbon enduro bike to pay for his Soulo and you’re right nobody criticized the fancy bike! It’s not like we decided to go shopping one day and bought all our gear, we were camping long before we started UA-cam and have slowly bought our gear over the years. Haha no wine or champaign for us, that’s far too sophisticated we’ll stick to the larger or cider!! Thanks for watching ATB Alan & Phil 👍
