Tempest - the dream machine from Dave Smith and Roger Linn

Years after owning the Tempest, I am still impressed and inspired by the Tempest, designed by the amazing Roger Linn and Dave Smith. I believe it is unique, underappreciated and underrepresented, perhaps due to the many bugs it had for years, which are now FIXED. Best kept secret? Great video
great video! one of a very few reviews without boring sermons :) vivid and fun! gonna look into my loopers collection now... and the gameboy makes it even better :D
Heyyyy Alex thank you!
Search for “sh-2000 Greek” to see and hear Greek musicians using it. Awesome stuff
It looks very difficult to do
Always alot of work but the end results speak for themselves.
Sorry dude, that drum pattern and sample is wack. The whole beat is unimaginative with zero feeling at all. Don't do it for the hype of the machine do it for the love of the art and passion for music. This scenario is in full abundance on youtube and has become watered down badly. The beat scene is souless and lame these days.
It's not that serious. This is just a tutorial for SP beginners, not a beat showcase. You're welcome to show people how it's done on UA-cam.
@@yepyep3897 It's not that serious, yep you said it and I don't have to proove anything to no one, in real life or social media.
Love you’re videos sir so great thank you 🙏🏻
Great video. The SH2000 was the first synth I ever bought 30 years ago and while I have owned about 50 different synths, this is one of the few I have kept. I have used for hundreds of gigs 95-05 and other than a couple of the plastic tabs snapping off it never let me down.
Awesome that you’ve had it for so long and used it on stage for years. Thanks for watching and posting your comment!
How is this setup working for you nowadays, curious about the console and hard disc recorder mainly? Cheers!
This is very interesting, thank you for the walk-through!
Put it 45 rpm
Awesome tutorial Do you have to clear those samples
Best video on UA-cam, thank you! Finally built up the courage to buy a sp1200! 😊
Excellent . this video makes me feel im actually done thinking about this choice. Thanks.
I love my MPC Live and my MPC Live 2. I have both of them in the gold edition because the rubber coating is trash.
Have you worked with the Rx 1200? How do you like it ?
I don’t know what that is sorry :) thanks for watching

Lovely work on this Mano !
Appreciate it!
fam you shaved during the video lol
Haha
we need more sp1200 videos from YOU brother!!!!!!
I know I know… Right now I’m in a new “mode” for my music and channel, and I hope you’ll stick around. In the new context and focus on meditation, the SP may still have a place… I’ll explore. Thanks for the message I appreciate it!
Best machine ever
Thanks for watching and being here! It truly is a special machine
would be fun but no way no hell am I paying 4k for one of these when I can buy way more new gear that does more
Totally understand that. It’s choice one makes. They are actually more than $4k these days I know it’s crazy. It’s a sort of state of mind. I’m lucky I got mine. Good luck with your music adventures and thank you for being here
Omfgosh FAM!!!!! I can't afford the og.. But mane I'm looking at that Rossum 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔 these videos crazy interesting, humble, Professor, & broking down for a more comfort when that time comes for one in my lifetime!!
That kick kicked my ass as well brother 🤣💯
I know it’s a crazy beast! Thanks for watching and your comment I appreciate it
Is that the 1986 prototype?
Around that time, but the engineers kept using it / modifying it until the end I think. It has the original prototype power supply that was later in the 90s edition. It has really old parts and strange markings all over
beautiful machine
Ahhh I need to make new videos! Those take so much work!! :D but seeing all of your messages remind me that it's probably worth it
I got the Rossum
Nice! Thanks for being here
Thank you for actually going through the features & the front panel. I'm a huge early 90's hip hop fan and always wondered how they did the sound & production. A lot of people here post vids of making beats on it but don't show what the buttons do. The explanation of multi pitch & level was great, I always wanted to know so that I could recreate it. I can't afford an SP but have the MPC software on my computer and wanted to see how the SP workflow compares. I think some of this can be recreated even on the Roland MC-707. Lo-fi, analog tape effects, compressors, etc can also be used. Now we have a lot more sampling time on modern machines but that early hip hop, house, and D&B sounds are unbeatable classics. This was a very helpful video.
Great to hear and thank you for the kind words! Breaking down is important. Took quite a while to get that tiny screen on camera like that haha
Got pretty much the same setup, Synths/samplers goes to HD24 then to a mixer for monitoring. Sadly, my mixer do not have any tape returns (Allen & heath ZED14). Got a question for you : Do you usually track your instruments with or without effects ? Thanks !
Hey thanks for your message. It depends. I usually record them dry, maybe with some EQ if it obviously needs some tweaking, and capture effects on separate tracks. Right now I make a ton of music on my Buchla modular, and effects are often key to a sound / instrument, so I capture them with effects in stereo
What’s the name of the outro song?
Hey thanks for your message and being here. No name of that piece of improv music, just recorded on the spot for an Instagram clip
We called that sleigh bells that ring cruncheness when you down tune
Thanks for the info and being here!
Just hooked myself a retro MPC One for $699. I could have definitely stretched for a Live II, (saw one for $900 with an SSD, and Decksaver included). And the prices on both One and Live II are very low right now cause Akai is getting ready for its new releases next year. I actually decided on this over the Live II because I didnt want an internal battery or on-board wifi. Crazy, I know. But that integrated battery on the Live, to me was more of a limitation than convenience, for my use. Besides finding proper replacements when it eventually dies, the integrated battery also adds more risk when shopping used, plus the travel/shipping restrictions to consider. And there were lots of users with battery failures and power faults out of the box. If you're not much of a flyer, and dont plan on traveling with it, this might not affect you, but I travel multiple times a year and restrictions and bans on lithium and NiMH batteries are changing all the time. While you can fly with the MPC Live easily enough, it still takes up essentially 1 entire bag and limits the number of any other lithium based electronics you are bringing as carry on. And some flights are already restricted to only one carry on bag. Then there is the Wifi component, which I dont really need as I dont plan on buying plugins or using their Splice samples. Many reported bug issues with Splice samples not working/playing after download. But even more of an issue that comes with Wifi are that their "premium" Plug-ins require a check in to their servers every 90 days. Basically making your hardware more dependent on licensed software and forcing Wifi to always be running (Sign the petition against this at Change. Org to "Stop Akai MPC Plugins requiring routine check"). So, is WIFI really a feature or another paywall limitation? Besides the fact that most electronics and cellular companies all force buyers to accept their terms and agreements that no one reads, or blatantly hides product limitations behind a paywall, there is also the issue of radiation safety from pulsed RF and microwaves when Wifi is continuously running, which I wont go into And some people even use these machines on their lap! So anyway, the Wifi is a hard pass for me. Just let me have an updated mpc daw with a nice screen for the modern day, updated memory storage formats, i/o connections, let it still be semi-portable, but lose all those "controller-esque" features that actually make you dependent on a computer or internet connection. And Akai can happily keep their OS menu diving, integrated batteries, and WIFI.
Hey thanks for taking the time to share your story and choices. Yeah I just finally did their big update, and it all feels like you’re signing in to a service. I get that. Still love it, and I’ll just keep using it :) but I understand where you’re coming from
Could I use a micro Korg as a midi controller for the arduinoboy pro?
Yes! Any midi controller and sequencer will woro
"The buttons they just do a TUK TUK TUK TUK" XD XD XD
I’m thinking of really getting one 🎉 🙏🏽🫡
Best kept secret 😊
Such a great series!
Thank you!! Massive respect for your work
@@ManoOne-Music-Production Likewise brotha, thank you so much! Just got my first 1200. Your videos have been bookmarked for this moment!
@@currycases Ohhh congrats!! I'm just seeing your message now. I need to get back into the UA-cam thing. Those videos take so much work!! But seeing everyone's comments remind me that they are probably worth it. Enjoy, and feel free to ask questions!
I had one of these as a kid and loved it. Never appreciated how good it was at the time and would love to have it now. I don't even know what happened to it sadly.
Same here! I did enjoy the hell of it but I should have looked after it better and kept it.
The legendary SP1200 prototype I guess! Read about how you got it, glad you got it and it didn't disappeared forever!
Thank you Stefan! There are a few prototypes out there, since they worked on the SP for a couple of decades and had lab units they always added / replaced parts on them. This one had (still has) the first “switching” power supply component, which then ended up on the 90s reissue. It has SP-12 parts in there too
@@ManoOne-Music-Production Yeah total lab rat unit testing new shit out, but kool that you got it and document it. Got the 1994 Black Re-Issue myself.
Yo what's the record at 10 mins? Got a sci fi tip to it!
Hey! Thanks for being here. It might have been The Planets (Holst), one of my favorite records
@mano1 i’m new to the SP 1200. Very familiar with the mpc. I’m seeing that the workflow is extremely different. The question I have is say I’m using one of the factory sounds libraries the Rossum SP 1200 to build a sequence. I record the drums and they loop from the factory library . If i load a a different Rossum library how do I load it without it, changing the drum sequence I just played? when I change it, it changes my current loop to whatever is in the new library if that makes sense
Hey sorry for the delay I don’t login on UA-cam very often. I’m not sure. I’m not familiar with the new one, although it’s supposed to work the same way. I never load sounds / replace sounds after recording a sequence, and always sample sounds in. I’m not sure!
Since last year's update, you can now assign Program Edit to Menu + Pad 4. Which means going to Program Edit is only a single handstroke now.
Hey thanks for the info. I’ve been scared to update the firmware as I’ve heard it changed the workflow a lot (enough to make me hesitate). Take care
@@ManoOne-Music-Production The workflow has changed for the better, that's why they've done it. Don't let the internet scare you, it's just bullshit from a few vocal naysayers that hate any change. The MPC is simply a better platform than it was a year ago, which was a better platform than a year before that. It's called progress.
@@Drrolfski Hey sorry for the delay seeing this and replying. I really appreciate what you said, and I'll be updating because of it! I can see how that happens
@@Drrolfski I'll update then! Thank you (I may have posted this twice --- juggling between multiple UA-cam accounts hah)
I remember a friend getting an SK1 while we were in High School when they came out. All we did that day he brought it to school was drop "F-bombs" and fart noises into the sampler and had the SK1 make a tune with it while we laughed our butts off. Good times! 😆
Yes!!! I never had one as a kid, BUT in the early 90s I had an Amiga, and a friend built me a sampler box which I used to sample crazy voice stuff and made PRANK CALLS playing those samples pitched up and down. The days before caller ID you know? Good times
@@ManoOne-Music-Production Prank calls you say? 😃 There was a VERY early text to speech program called SAM for the C64. Me and a friend used to harass our assistant manager with pre-recorded clips we generated from the SAM software late at night like once or twice a month usually from payphones around town with a small portable cassette recorder. Usually we would just call him a douche-bag or something similar....😄. Good times! 🤣
Great Video!! thank you Greetings from Korea!!
Thank you very much!
Can you do one on recording a sequence?
Do you mean record out into a computer? In this video I record sequences on the SP
@Music Production With MANO 1 all good man. I figured it out. (4 months ago when I asked. 😆🤣).
@@mpmi7588 Good to hear!!
Great review, thanks; lots of practical points to consider … Speaking of, what happens when the battery in the Live II dies … ?! Are they readily available and easily replaceable … ?! Thanks! 😎👍🏼
That is a GREAT point. No idea. I would imagine that it's a battery model that could be sourced. Those newer MPCs are pretty modular in there / look like computers with components
mpcstuff has them but they're $240!
Let's say , if i just wanna take only basslines from the record can i just chop another part off sir ?
I usually set my quantize to hi res and hold down the note repeat simultaneously while truncating the start and also end points to get rid of unwanted air and sounds.
You know, that is something I should do, and should cover in a future video! I never did that. I keep forgetting 😅
@@ManoOne-Music-Production can you make beats just using floppy disks or do you need a turntable to use this machine
@@jamesmock2109 Hey James. So the turntable is just there to provide sounds by sampling it. It could be a computer with UA-cam (people sample a lot from UA-cam), or a synth, or a mixer with several instruments connected to it. Basically the SP-1200 is a pure sampler, and it has NO sounds inside it. You plug something with audio to its (mono) input, hit sample, and capture samples / clips, that you then trigger by tapping the pads, and recording what you tap as "segments" (patterns). Hope this helps! Post any questions here and I'll do my best to answer. Take care
@@ManoOne-Music-Production how do you sample from UA-cam I didn't know you can do that
I have had the Live II black since launch and never had any "sticky" problems with the coating. Obviously some people have, maybe due to humidity, UV, or whatever, but it is not a given dude. It doesn't happen to every black MPC. Mine looks as good as new. No issues. I just wanted to point that out as you implied it happens to every black Live I and II. Cheers bro.
Hey i appreciate you posting that. The ones I saw seemed to have dust / gunk stuck to them. Also, close up pictures of units for sale on Reverb had that look. I had music gear in the past with a similar rubbery material and they all turned like that. I was definitely assuming, and will keep an eye out when I come across other black live units. Take care and thanks again
@@ManoOne-Music-Production Seriously good point, no one talks about the finish of these devices. the rubber coating ages horribly.
I have my main output hooked up to the speakers, no assistance outputs connected. When I sample and it assigns the sample to an output like you had chosen 7, if I don’t have those outputs hooked up, I wont be able to hear anything? Is that correct? Must I have each output assigned and hooked up to a mixer?
Hey so all sounds should come out of the mono MIX output, no matter what channel they are assigned to. All channels are merged into the MIX out. Hope this helps. I hope I’m remembering this right though! Haha… not in front of my SP right now, but I know that I don’t always hook up all the separate outs and often just use 1 cable from MIX especially when listening to old beats
Sick beat 90s vibes
Thank you so much!
