Could those converted gas fixtures have been installed at a later date? Natural gas *still* isn't available on most farms & propane wasn't common until fairly recently. I'm wondering if those gas fixtures were purchased as "antiques", converted to electricity & then installed. (Perhaps in the 1990's when they were popular & still inexpensive & easy to find as salvage.). Lots of old farmhouses in my area have installed antique electric & converted gas light fixtures, even though electricity wasn't available until after WWII. (I'm proudly guilty of doing this, myself. lol) I'm Canadian so I can't speak for Texas, but up here, kerosene lamps (with or without) "Aladdin mantles" were the ubiquitous farm lighting until electricity arrived.

Great info. All of my original base from 1916 was cut this way. It really helps on tall base boards to make the joint look perfect.

I often use a Dremel tool to finish the final cuts. I've even seen people use a angle grinder to do the same. But, that's too aggressive for me.

Two things: a coping saw is meant to be used by pulling on the handle, not pushing. By pulling, the blade is always in tension and will stay straight, whereas if you push, as Brent Hull is doing, the slender blade will bend, cut poorly and even pop out of its keepers on the saw. The second thing is that the back cutting is way too much. A few degrees is adequate. He will have a void inside that joint with that much back-cutting.
