Fishing from the kayak from all over the state of Victoria. More and more an addiction to surface fishing! Along the way I have tried to capture some of the moments. Hope you enjoy.

Melbourne Snapper: Guys, too close?!
Переглядів 8 тис.14 днів тому
Melbourne snapper season is well known for people getting to close to each other when the fish are on. I personally am happy to put up with it for a few weeks of the year only. What about you? Got any stories? Positive or negative? Some may curse it, some may think it is social connection. Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments.

Very good session on the Reds at Ricketts Point. Fish were caught on lightweight outfits, whilst flicking soft plastics. Got the bag, released some, gave some to other fishos on the water. A memorable session.

Fished the eve they got dropped in. Hooked one in the back on a minnow lure. Water was dirty, but they were still taking lures. Most people I saw were releasing them, which is good to see. Helped a guy land one too.

Such an interesting perspective Michael. Great video, but really dislike the double standards I must say. I was the first one on that school of snapper, before you and your mate also came over. I wasnt fussed at all, instead happily kept fishing and didn't say anything! So you could see my surprise when my mate showed me this. When you and your mate joined, you guys went into my casting area and you could say "crowded the area." But Iwasnt fussed at all! I was just happy when other fellow kayak fishos get onto fish too. Each to there own, but for me, I'm happy when others share the joy of getting snapper, and we were all laughing and having a good time. I can understand if boats were going into it, as it's plain dangerous,.but c'mon mate, don't complain about something you do yourself 😅
No complaints at all from my end. Had a ball! Thanks for the comment.
That's a beast of trout, I hope to get down there one day... He was obviously hungry, took it right down. What line are you running mate?
I run a 15lb fluro leader on 10lb braid for the trout. Yeah, It's a good waterway- with some nice trout in the mix.
What a horse of a fish, that would look nice mounted, but nice of you to release it, total gentleman.
Yeah, put back for someone else to also enjoy.
Beautiful looking fish well done that river is pumping in the main current! i think the 2 car shuffle would be in order for sure going upstream in that would be tough going in a fishing kayak
Sandy, yeah- this day i pushed up on the edges, hard work indeed. Ideally a 2 car shuffle job.
@Michael_Lane_Fishing nice! Good to know it can be done
Gorgeous brown Michael, well done.
Cheers Rawlo
Why I don't fish Ricketts
Each to their own , I limit myself to only fishing it in November
What an absolute circus! All those boats must be having a massive impact on the fish stocks. You need a few heavy sinker to hurl at them boats that get a little too close!
Yeah- ideas.... I am happy to join the circus for a few trips every year... Then back to the backwaters.... away from this stuff for the rest of the year
@ yes, fair enough too. It’s all about having different experiences. As long as no one runs you over!
That is ridiculous with all the kayaks so close. 1 or 2 nearby is ok but dozen or more plus boats no thanks
Yep, I agree. Happy to do this for 2 weeks of the year only.
Boats like that is why I avoid Lake Nagambie like the plague. The river is much more relaxing.
Yeah 100% great to get away from the hoards
Kayakers are like the cyclists of the of the ocean.
Then give me a helmet and don me in lycra.
Nope, that would be jet skiers!
No problem as long there not in my Berlie trail?
Yep, being directly behind someone in their casting zone is a no go
Im pretty sure that boat drove through my lines the other day 🤣 we had a charter boat drop anchor behind our boat 3 times. I thought surely his taking the piss. No respect out there.
Yes, perhaps it is good that the red hot snapper bite lasts only so long...
Guy in the boat is a total flog, seen ugly scenes in the past when they do it to the wrong person. They don’t hand out common sense with boat licenses.
Bit of bay-rage on the water!
Absolute madness... seagulls to a chip!
Rawlo, yeah bit like that, but on this occasion there were many chips available.
THAY ARE WATCHING YOU LOOK OUT BEHIND YOU Darren from Coffs harbor
If that boat is watching me, it is a deliberate act... even worse to get within 10m of a 2.5m kayak in a boat travelling at reasonable speed like that.
Try fishing Portarlington pier on a weekend. Shoulder to shoulder and no chance of a spot as people are taking shifts for the proven spots.
Sounds like it is an up close and personal thing.
Nah that’s just too much.. Nothing turns Vic fishos into bigger assholes and dickheads than peak snapper season
carnage for a short time, but I think the real chaos is short lived, by December heaps of space around
It's a com on thing these days courtesy has completely disappeared once upon a time if you went past another fisherman you'd slow right down I do t know if you play golf but the same thing happens there it used to be a golden rule to allow people on the green to putt out before playing up these days you have to watch for incoming missiles
Good points you make. Perhaps it is a reflection of a wider society issue.
Hey, I was here first!
Haha, yeah someone has to find the fish to start with!
Hard for kayaks to travel like a boat, so don’t mind kayakers fishing next to each other! One big family anyway!
100%. Yeah yakkers work well together I have found. As you say, the waters they fish are often close to shore.
Hahaha like a bunch of covid heads fighting over toilet paper
Interesting comparison
@Michael_Lane_Fishing ok maybe a bit too much. Like a bunch of seagulls over a bag of chips
This happens because people cant keep their mouth shut when they start catching fish in one area, if everyone keeps it to themselves until the fish move on then post, this wont happen as much
To some degree I disagree in this instance. This area in the video is one of the most visited fishing area of any in Vic during the November period. People on the move see people hooked up and decide to join the party.
hey michael, I was just wondering what lure you were using, thanks
Peezy, that's a Gulp Nuclear Chicken, 4 inch.
You always know it's Snapper season in Melbourne when you are close enough to another vessel to smell their farts 😂 I've had it a few times now where I've hooked into a good fish and a boat will anchor up less than 15 metres away from me while I'm fighting the fish. Where I've been fishing lately it's been packed with kayaks as well as a few boats. I largely don't mind as long as we're all basically doing the same thing; going up wind of where the fish are holding, drifting through the area and then peeling back around to the start of the drift. You can kind of do it in a formation and in a rotation where everyone can have a shot at the fish. What I get frustrated by is when we're all doing this already and someone comes along and anchors right in the middle of us, this happened recently and I tried to be nice and tell the guy to do what we are doing as it is producing fish and him anchoring over our drift line is a pain - he yelled at me and told me to f off. I slightly changed my drift line and kept catching; he got nothing but banjos, cracked the shits and left 😂
Jordy, yeah a good point you make about people taking their turn in a group, fishing the same patch. It must be said, it's nice to cast into an open area. It's a shame that a-hole parked his boat right in the middle of everyone on the drift. The Banjos were welcome Karma!
Stuff fishing in there ! Your brave. Jee that water gives me the creeps
Heaps of people kayak the river in the city. No real dramas. All fish caught in the CBD are released.
Hi mate, are you using braid for your setup? Were you using a sounder to mark up fish? Thanks
Yes, braid as the main line. I never use a sounder in this small kayak. There is no room for one and I prefer to fish without a sounder, and instead drift extensive areas until I find the fish.
Hi , what pound braid and leader do you use?
15lb braid with 20lb fluoro tied on with an FG knot
Cracker video, im just wondering how far you are out from shore? what size jig heads were u using?
Hey Tom, distance from shore varies, anywhere from about 300m-500m. I change between 1/4 ounce, 1/6 ounce and 1/8 ounce depending on depths and current. Hook size is a 2/0. Hope that helps.
onya sir
Leave some for the rest of us 😂
x2 released back to swim again this day!
Holy crap, it’s like rush hour out there!
Plenty of activity from both fish and boats on the move.
Wow what an absolute ripper session, some great fun on the light gear, especially the bigger models... Nice of you to get matey onto some fish too. That one around 21:00 minutes in put up a cracker fight for its size, good stuff trying to give everyone the tips to get on the fish, keep up the awesome work as always mate. The fish around the 24:00 minute was definitely the highlight, I reckon 🎣
more boats and yaks than seagulls this time of year
Yeah- you need to be willing to share this time of year in PPB. Also, one eye out for boats with no regard to yakkers.
Great sesh mate, well done. Im trying to try this location on my yak for s long time now but to be honest just no time as I’ve done some surgery recently but hitting the water soon, do u mind sharing a place where to put the kayak drom and maybe a location on the water?? Tux
Try parking and launching out of Ricketts Tea house. Paid parking after 8am i believe.
@ thx mate I appreciate that
@@fishinglogo847 No worries- hope you get onto em
Cleaned up mate! Great work mick. 👌
Cheers Andy, yeah - was a top session out. Love the reds.
@ I’d love to get into them but I hate going anywhere near Melbourne 🤣 no offence!
@@FishingandhuntingwithAndy I reluctantly enjoy the crowds Oct Nov.... then Dec onwards drive the other direction !
Wow they go hard mate, I never realised they fought like that 🎣💪
Yeah- they give a very good account of themselves
Cracker mate, well done on that beautiful bow
Nice one Michael! looks like they punch above their weight it is so different for someone who lives inland seeing a fish like that landed in a kayak!
Sandy- these things go real hard in the shallow water. Yes, at first fishing in the vast ocean takes a little getting used to, but rewards await. It's a nice variation to the serenity of Vic's inland waterways.
@Michael_Lane_Fishing somtimes you have got to feel a bit exposed to feel alive, I feel a bit like that coming across Dartmouth in the Dark.I reckon it would be awesome to paddle a surf ski in the ocean on a downwind run with the waves pushing you along, I would have to get over the fear of sharks.
@@akhector Spot on Sandy, in the elements. True fishing experience, under your own power.
Beautiful solid fish well done! Really working that minnow, I see you baby shakin' that minnow 🤣 I will have to try that seems to get the job done, it's more akin to how I work soft plastics
Yeah, i think i have adopted that method due to fishing plastics Sandy! Lol - I previously did not do this. I guess it is a side effect of fishing the bay for pinkies and snapper on soft plastic lures. Twitch/twitch.
What a fish!! And the backdrop is stunning. 🤩 keep casting!
Cheers Matty boy
My favorite way to fish, from my kayak on remote lakes🌠🐟👋😎👍Dayum nice thick rainbow
Remote lakes are a great kayak option. Paddling edges stealth style is one of my fav methods.
❤
Cheers Toni
Really nice
Thanks Toni
Nice one Michael! Great work, It looks so unnatural to be fishing there in a kayak, you see the odd person fishing off the bank in those sort of areas but i have never seen someone fishing out of a kayak there, you have gotta not wait until someone else does somthing to do it! There is maybe 4-5 hundred people employed where i work and i am the only one that rides a non-ebike to work one other bloke rides on e-bike it's about 17km out there so that puts a few off! It's amazing how there is still fish in such heavily populated areas, would the fish be any good to eat out of there or would they absorb to much pollution?
It's nice to walk to the beat of one's own drum Sandy. 100% This river is surprisingly healthy if the Perch population is ay indication. However, I release all I catch, as the Yarra's reputation is one of heavy metals, toxins and so on in the sediment. Decades of mismanagement have done that. E-bikes tossed in (including batteries) also had me wondering...
@Michael_Lane_Fishing yes those hire bikes, scooters ect are an environmental disaster!
Fishy fishy!
Seeing your line twitch when the EP first tapped at your SP. I rewatched that bit of the vid multiple times. gets the heart racing. Thanks for sharing
Yes, the tell tale flick - flick of an EP hit. Discrete yet evident.
I have caught an EP very much the same before, it's like they have stunted growth or something haha Not a long fish but big fish 😅 It's like they are already as built as a 45-50 model but the length is only around 25-30cm...
Yeah, the proportions are very different to the usual EP. Surprising to see, and cool too.
Looks like those bream youi were catching in the drain Bushy.
@@AndrewFishman they looked like snapper cross Bream 🤣🤣
Looks like a cross between a yella and a EP 😂 Nice fish! Keep up the great work! Tight lines bro! 🎣🤙🎣🤙
Yep, this one had that characteristic 'hump' of a yella for sure. Pretty cool looking. Thanks for the comment.
