    Where do you get your bearings?

      If it's just the bearing and not the whole assembly you want, Amazon is a good place to start. If it's the whole bearing/stud assembly, I will have to go back and look. Just let me know. Thanks for watching!!!

    Same sort of issues I’ve found with my auction bought John Deer 640 rake. Took all tine bars off and the “knuckles” off the ends, only 4 of the 10 had good seals on the bearings, all were in great need of grease and of course I had the twin (sans rust) bearing to yours shown in one. Before I found your video with all the great knowledge I was going to make it work with a dust cover that really reduced the slop…well, with good grease packed in too, but now I will just replace the bearing thanks to you friend! I bought a scrap 640 as well, so I will see if I can Frankenstein the two to be good for this fall season and work on the other parts over the winter, May come out being able to sell the excess parts and make the money back!

    Thanks for making these videos. I've recently undertaken working on my Aunt's 256 hay rake. I started with the gearbox. Bearings and seals and ujoints for the drive shaft. One of the bolts that holds the fork to the clutch lever backed itself off sometime in the past. The old rake had done a decent bit of work with that bolt rolling around inside. Needless to say the gear set was pretty hammered...... even had what may have been the nut smooshed in-between the teeth of the ring gear. It's looking like bar bearings to be done soon.

    So are the bearings not sealed? I'm changing the bearings on my 256 tine bars and had the same idea about the grease fittings...just curious if the grease will come through the bearings if they are sealed bearings. Thanks.

    • @mikethejoatmon8287
      @mikethejoatmon8287 Рік тому

      Kyle, thanks for the question. The factory bearings are sealed on both sides. If you are going to add a grease fitting to the tine bar bearing housings, just pop out the bearing seal that would go into the bearing housing first. A small flat screw driver inserted between the seal and the bearings inner race works well for this. Leave the seal in the bearings that are going to be on the snap ring side. Thanks for watching and good luck with repairs.

      @@hartshomesteadaustralia3837 Shouldn't be any oil. Sounds like bottom seal on the gearbox is leaking oil, possibly from a bad bearing in the gearbox or just a bad seal. Check out my video on the gearbox repair for New Holland 256 rake. I show seal and bearing numbers you need to rebuild it. Good luck with your repair!

    How do you take the gear box off of the 256 rake?

    • @mikethejoatmon8287
      @mikethejoatmon8287 3 роки тому

      Start by taking pin/bolt out of u-joint shaft on wheel drive shaft. Use rope/twine to secure upper and lower gearbox u-joint shafts together. Remove bolts from center of tine bar spider/star. Stripper bars should hold this end of the reel up. Hub behind spider/star remove center nut/bolt holding hub on gearbox shaft. Remove 4 bolts/nuts from gearbox housing that holds gearbox to rake frame. Gearbox should slide out of hub and out of the rakes frame. Have someone hold hub when removing gearbox from rake frame hub and gearbox shaft have key way. Safety First. Hope this helps.

    I have a new holland 256 rollabar. I can't get it to engage.do you have any idea what could be the problem?also where do you get parts for these old pieces of equipment?

    • @mikethejoatmon8287
      @mikethejoatmon8287 4 роки тому

      Aaron, Easiest part first. Parts should be available from a New Holland dealer. Have ordered from joesmachineryllc.com out of Pennsylvania. (aftermarket parts. Has parts catalog available.) Amazon and ebay also. Engage question: Is cable loose enough in engage position? If you move the engage lever by hand do you feel resistance from the spring on inside of gearbox. Is input shaft from rake wheels to gearbox turning OK when pulling rake. (Could be drive dogs in rake wheels not working correctly). To check drive dogs: Disengage gearbox, turn drive shaft between wheels forwards, should hear a loud distinct click from each rake wheel. Start with these. Let me know! Mike

    The gear box on my New Holland #56 looks identical except its oil filled. Not sure if its originally greased filled or not, but I do wonder how the top bearing is suppose to stay lubed. I recently just went through this "new to me" rake and the box looked like it had not been touched in 20 years and the top bearing was in great shape. I guess the oil must splash up there enough.

    • @mikethejoatmon8287

      D.C. ,did some research, found Operators Manual for 256, 258, and 260 New Holland Rakes on UA-cam. Gear box capacity approximately 1 quart of SAE No. 140 gear oil. Check oil level by removing top left cover bolt under top bearing. Oil is fine as long as seals are holding. NH recommend several years ago to fill with No.2 grease instead of oil that's the reason I added grease fittings. I believe the gear boxes are the same as #56.
