The Breathing Space: A Guided Mindfulness Exercise
From Chapter 9: "Mindfulness in Everyday Life: Taking a Breathing Space," of The Mindful Way through Depression, Second Edition by Mark Williams, John Teasdale, Zindel Segal, and Jon Kabat-Zinn.
The MBCT program offers a special tool that is specifically designed to bring mindfulness into our everyday lives, particularly at the tipping points when our mood is beginning to go down. This tool is a mini-meditation called the three-minute breathing space. In MBCT it is always used as the first step in dealing with difficult situations and feelings.
In the breathing space, the entire teaching of the MBCT program is concentrated in three steps. Many of those who have participated in the program have singled this practice out as the most useful feature of the whole course. When so many of our daily tasks seem to require doing mode’s critical thinking, this practice offers a quick and surprisingly effective way to switch to being mode when we most need to do so.

Self-Compassion Tool: Craft a Self-Compassion Reminder
Переглядів 2014 днів тому
Today is the final day in our 5 Days of Mindfulness series! Because most cultures don’t encourage self-compassion and are even downright suspicious of it, we don’t get many messages that help us adopt this supportive stance. When we’re already feeling overwhelmed and burned out, it can be especially hard to remember to be self- compassionate. For this reason, it’s worth considering ways to make...

Self-Compassion Tool: Take a Providing Self-Compassion Break
Переглядів 814 днів тому
On Day 3 of 5 Days of Mindfulness, we’re focusing on how to provide for ourselves. Mindfulness allows us to authentically answer the question "What do I need?" It turns our attention inward, facilitating introspection. When we lead an unexamined life, we sometimes go along with cultural programming that tells us we should put others’ needs before our own. Or a consumeristic society that tells u...

On Day 2 of 5 Days of Mindfulness, we’re taking a break for some tender self-compassion. An amazing thing about adopting a warm and caring attitude toward our experience of burnout is that it becomes an opportunity to both give and receive love-from ourselves to ourselves. As we learn to become more comfortable with the voice of self-kindness, our ability to love grows stronger. It doesn’t have...

It takes a lot of patience and self grace to get past anxiety and OCD. I remember a book called 30 Days to Stop Obsessing by Harper Daniels that I really enjoyed for learning mindfulness techniques to overcome.
I have this book. It’s definitely worth getting if you have ADHD.
Thank you! This was helpful!
Thank you❤
12:42am Just taking time to discover this now. Amazing, so looking forward to continuing to reflect and respond.
I’d like to know what you think about Primitive Reflexes and their effect on ADHD.
I am so frustrated when I hear we must stop and then go back to the task without losing our place! I can NOT do that! I have to continuously maintain high concentration to perform well enough. I wish Dr. Barkley could realize this.
HELL ...this is disappointing! this great stuff has been up for3 yrs & only has 10 comments! Well I am 83 & have known for a very long tinpm i have a different view! I sure know a lot but the application usually sags! ....get the stuff. start the job & not finish...frustrating ..BUT HEY I am off on ANOTHER!! could be good if those near were moto rated to show happyness about the thing I was completing....instead they predict I won't finish ...they are right! ...I want lots of CLOCKS ...where I can SEE em ...only allowed 1...... I want a BIG planner ...gotta be behind the door.... etc yup its a problem but now I have a few reasons! by the by check out NLP good stuff if you get a good book Genie Z Labordes ."..Infuencing with Integrity "is a good start it shows a lot of ideas which could work in implementing Dr Barkleys info.
Thanks I'll give this a try. Pie charts.

Very interesting, cant wait to read the book
Is there a companion guide or website to this monologue? I am really struggling to understand anything she is saying.
I would start the citations in her and Yang's article "Decolonization is Not a Metaphor."
You support on kidnapping babies, kids and pregnant women! Who does that?!?! It’s saying a lot about you, and not a good thing. Be ashamed of yourself!! A terror supporter
Great insights. Just ordered your book.
Wonderful, thank you!
Great video!

Keto or carnivore diet will clear up adhd symptoms
Which research paper said that?????
Not for the month of us
Absolutely NOT true. A healthy diet is key to good health, but absolutely not a panacea to anything. While I don’t mean disrespect, this comment is an example of the misinformation that is everywhere out there. Is it your intention to spread ignorance? Seriously, we don’t need kindergarten thinking in response to Dr. Barkley’s nuanced, sophisticated approach to ADHD, kindly keep your one size fits all solution to yourself, it helps absolutely no one.
Bollocks
Looking forward to reading this (AKA listening to the audiobook)!
Thank you! I look forward to reading it
Closer to truth: is time real ? Sunday, 20. November 2022 You need to watch the video to understand, Amin Omar - 1 day ago There is a big difference between what happens in the brain during dreams and during driving, shooting,…etc where humans can reach perfection, that will match physics calculations, for instance using robots in driving, shooting,…etc Amin Omar - 1 day ago 2:40 that is incorrect: it’s related to the arena and psychological atmosphere within but it is the same strategy (same principles and method used in both brain and physics) Amin Omar - 1 day ago 7:10 that is something else related to the whole process (time process is just a part of it!) they go too far without enough understanding of the basics, similar to what’s going on in physics nowadays. Amin Omar - 1 day ago 5:10 Time calculations is very complex process, what I have mentioned is just the meaning of time, but its mechanism is far more complicated, it’s connected to space, action, ….. 5:30 that is related to the wrong understanding of time. they think that time is a thing! does exist doesn’t mean that it’s necessary…..! to concise: time is a process,…! Amin Omar - 1 day ago 7:50 that has nothing to do with the process of time itself! Amin Omar - 1 day ago Time is the same (same method used in both physics and in human brain (not the same maths but the same method) the effect of psychological factor is related to atmosphere in the arena. But the method used in both human brain and in physics is the same (not the same mathematics but the same principles) How could some humans reach perfection in driving, archery, shooting,…etc. both in physics and brain are connected to the same environment. to concise: the effect of psychological factor doesn’t mean that it is not the same method in both human brain and in physics. Amin Omar - 1 day ago if there is a competition between robot and human, let’s say archery game, will human need to calculate time which a process that relies on other factors, will the process of calculating time in robot differ from human (method)?! Both of them are in the same arena (let’s assume that both will succeed in shooting the target) even if human used different mathematics in the brain but at the end both will stick to the same principles (method of time calculation)! Humans calculate wind speed too (unknowingly), some humans can reach perfection. dreams,…. etc is a different story because of the different arena (no real dimensions, psychological factors,….etc) but it’s the same principles (unreal but similar). Amin Omar - 1 day ago Yeah most fundamental but not real anymore because of the revelation from the sky: Time is the result of calculating process that requires an action and space. that means the real problem is in space and how it does emerge, understanding space will need better understanding of numbers (constants and its role) probably what is going on in atomic clocks in different gravitational fields is related to how gravity affects particles not to time itself as an independent dimension. a lot of work to do, opening the gate of science will need real hard worker scientists , that will take time. Amin Omar - 1 day ago 1:30 they have a lot of confusion and misunderstanding: physics is the result of conscious human mind (they invented tools to reach high accuracy), humans can’t calculate time consciously to high accuracy without tools including mathematics, but they can do that to high accuracy that reaches perfection (calculations in the background). It’s very complicated….! Amin Omar - 1 day ago On Skeptic Haroon Averroes 7 mo ago 59:00 give your clown this: time strongly related to space, humans need space as arena to calculate time, time travel to the past is not possible, why it is a long story, basically if that is possible humans in future would come to me directly! unfair! your brain makes continuous calculations for dimensions and change thus "time", the cerebellum plays main role in that process, but you are unaware of that, that is why speed, acceleration, velocity,... are strongly related to space and time and how we measure them. reference, memory, it is a long story! the clock and hour, minute hands are the reference and memory, ticking is the measurement, the story is in space itself, they have misunderstanding, there is a process of space creation and there are two cycles not only one cycle, still too early for that. ticking is the measurement, the story is in space itself, they have misunderstanding, there is a process of space creation and there are two cycles not only one cycle, still too early for that. that does not mean that time does not exist or just an illusion, it only means: there is no time without space even imaginary one.
This irrational senile knows nothing!
Book is very worth getting - who has not got regrets? Some that can seriously haunt you.
R & R...is a more effective way to convey our Thoughts & Feelings!!! Expressing those Loving Kindnesses toward one another! Mindfulness is the key!!!
Great job production wise mom
I agree. Lovely music, and presentation. Must be proud of her
I really admire your talks and these videos have been very informative for someone who is learning about DBT.
Ha, this just arrived in my mailbox today. And this came up in the recommended videos a second ago. Didn't know this video existed. What an introduction.
I wish Dr. Barkley did the reading for the audiobooks. As someone who has ADHD I attend better to his familiar, direct voice than I do to an unfamiliar sleep inducing voice.
Ritalin will help you read
A book that summarizes the "lecture for parents" and the "burnet lectures" would easily become the best selling and useful book. And there should be an insane focus on tiltration medicaiton selection and EXACTLY how to dose and find the right medication mix. Since you cant rely on psychiatrists having time nowadays. No young people go into the field the practitioners get older and older and i guess thats because people dont take adhd seriously, the ones that do dont understand it and money dryes out from the government because people think adhd is creativity, engery, happyness distractability, concentration, planing and not enought to do list therapy, love from parents and coaching. Also social media. R.I.P Have a nice retirenment you earned it sir, tho u are needed more then ever. I hopped you stay active for ever since work is the spice of life and keeps the mind clear and the the soul young as they say.
Jordan Peterson the snake oil salesman got better book sales
Russel Barkley is a genius but I expected a focus on medication treatment. He seems to have broken down to the pressure and now is pro therapy and almost ignores medication (definitly not interessted in precise tiltration. Then they are useless like eye glasses that worsen rather than improve eyesigt. Some guy told Mr Barkley he had lots of impact. That guy had no idea what he was talking about. Now the only Researcher that has a idea what adhd relly is is gone. I think the adhd research space is in for dark times. I would not be surprised if it degenerates to pre 1980 views of adhd. Most people seem to be immune to real application of the scientific method and go instead by intuition and then try to prove what they aleardy believe just simply using the fact that there is much material on adhd to ignore what goes against there hypothesis and using anything that supports it. A sad day. But eventho Mr Barkley uncovered lots about adhd the treatment was still terrible since noone had time to fineadjust medications or even know what to adjust to. Simply using rating scales seemed not possible since clinitioins have no time, outdated views, gutinstincts and definitly no idea or desire to relly take the time they dont have and the money they dont get to properly treat people. Thats why most people stop adhd medication in a year and continue to propogate "big pharma" conspiracys because the medicaitons obvioulsy dont work if you just use it liberaly without effort and finetuning. Sadly now that mr Barkley that had a brother with adhd and therefore be a better scientist next to his dilligence is gone from the field dark days will come. And in fact the field stagnates even now. Money is wasted on diet, therapy and other paths that go noowhere in a extremly accelerated way, while mr Barkleys work and espeically pharmacotherapy dies on the runway after having provided the best and only revolutionary results it has. That goes to show that trump mindset, instinct and opportunism is the limit of scientific advancement. We came far. I hope they take depression more seriously because people kill themselfs so at least when ur life sucks u can maybe not be depressed until you die with untreated adhd and a terrible live without drive and happyness while everyone thinks you have too much distracting happynes and energy.
You need to talk to someone
Dude go to Google Scholar. There are new research every week
I have such compassion for your comment, my best recommendation is please consider what I have done for myself - get yourself into therapy. Dr. Barkley is a gift to our community, doesn’t mean he’s the sole source of research or work in this area - lots and lots of research is being done and ongoing. I welcome pharmaceutical help, but I recognize the pills alone are not going to “fix” me, they are a vital tool but not the only one - I’ve learned I must use every tool at my disposal and hold onto hope, wishing you the best ❤️🩹
Thank you! 🙏🙏🙏🙏
Wow. The last teacher: Cold. As. Ice.

Man, I wish I could buy it but it's not available in my country. Got my diagnosis now, at 18. It's the beginning of my adult life and I feel like it'd help me so so much

Thank you so much for this book. I bought it because my doctor recommended it. Haven’t read it yet because of my ADHD but I will start reading it today 😂

Great therapist.
i am very grateful that this person exists
So grateful for him!! He is truly compassionate and sympathic of the issues we deal with!!
Also other researchers that help to expand the knowledge
Thank you
Will there be an audiobook version released soon?
This is sooo important. It is the only way info goes i to my brain. All books about ADHD should be in audio form otherwise they miss the essential audience that would benefit from them. Please, we would love it!!
I'm for the audiobook as well. I enjoy learning but reading is not one of my strengths.
There is an audiobook of this title available on Audible! www.audible.com/pd/Taking-Charge-of-Adult-ADHD-Second-Edition-Audiobook/B09W83QYMN
Thank you!🙏🙏🙏
I just bought the book. 58 yrs old and just now understanding. Thank you, this is a life changer!
We're so happy to hear this!
When I listen to Russell regarding AD/HD, it's a grim outlook. However, is this book helpful? If so how/why?
@@jed88 Hi Jay. The neuroscience is rapidly unfolding. I suggest learning from several perspectives. Russell’s career supports ADHD and he himself is ADHD. We can do research and learn more every day. Russell got us on the map
@@suzychristensen8977 Yes, Russell’s career supports ADHD. Didn't know he himself has ADHD. Glad the neuroscience is rapidly unfolding.
Just ordered the book
Wonderful!
Thanking God for Dr. Barkley! This book is excellent. Any chance he could read it on Audible? I purchased it there but would SO prefer hearing Dr. Barkley.
Me too. The audible reader is difficult to listen to for me.
So funny. I just made the same comment and then saw yours.
How does the second edition differ from the first edition?
