Hello, Capt Josh here! This is my wildlife channel with all my footage on it from my adventures, everything from the tiniest birds to the biggest whales! Humpback whale CRUSHES baitball of herring!
One of my favorite shots from spring of 2024, this Humpback whale took advantage of a large school of herring that was chased to the surface by King Salmon, and absolutely CRUSHED it!

How Sea Lions Catch Salmon
Переглядів 1,2 тис.4 місяці тому
A question that used to bother me a bit, was how do Sea Lions catch fast fish like salmon? Do they have some sort of trick or strategy that helps them? After years of filming Steller Sea Lions in Icy Strait Alaska, I think I have the answer! Capt Josh. All footage was filmed by Captain Josh.

Incredible Humpback Whales Feeding! (Veggie Whale part 2)
Переглядів 970Рік тому
Last year, a bizarre activity was filmed by us for the first time, with the various captains on the water humorously calling the whales partaking in it "The Veggie Whales". Then, there was one, maybe two whales participating in this behavior. This year, 2023, there were at least four, and as many as seven whales that were feeding in this way, and their technique was much more refined! We were a...
Spearfishing Prowfish in Alaska!
Переглядів 715Рік тому
Prowfish are an incredibly unique fish that we only find in the North Pacific! They are abundant here in Alaska, more abundant than fishery incidents would suggest, due to their unique lifestyle. They feed primarily on jellyfish, particularly Lion's Mane Jellyfish, but at the same time they live in deep holes in the crevices of rocks and boulders. This is a strategy that is both simple and effe...
Looking for GIANT LINGCOD with a GoPro!
Переглядів 2,8 тис.Рік тому
While fishing the wild Shelikof Strait in Alaska, I wanted to try a certain hump for some Lingcod. The weather was so bad though, that we were only going to stay and fish if there were good fish there, so I decided that we would do a quick drop, and drift over the top of the area, and see what came up. I had the GoPro on board so I rigged it up and sent it down. We did the drift in about five m...

Orca Vs Huge Sea Lion on the Drone!

The epic contest of a huge male Steller Sea Lion fighting for its life and a pod of hungry Transient Orca intent on making him their meal! Filmed both from the boat and the drone, this desperate battle for survival went on for hours, a highly unusual event for Orca, who are usually able to kill and eat their prey in a matter of minutes. But this Sea Lion was not going down without a fight! Watc...
Orca Killing and eating Porpoise!

Wild wild footage, showing one of the rawest and rarest sights to see and film in whale-watching; an Orca predatory event. Orca by themselves are uncommon, covering vast distances every day and never staying long in one location, but to film them hunting prey items is far less common. In this footage, filmed by Capt Josh of Alaska Whale and Drone Tours, several Transient Orca close in on and ki...

Drone footage of Orca Hunting Porpoise! Kill Cut!
U should have extra battery filming this exciting fight, U miserable dum shet! Drone is not expensive, could have extra one deprived viewers enjoyment in the end! I am not subscribing 2 display my disappointment or anger 4 Ur dum shet poor preparation n better prepare next time; got that! 1500 meal divided by 4-5 is not much but worth. Unlike land predators hunting end in well under 5-mintes, poor Orca has to work so hard as there is NO cover for their ambush. Hope Orca took care of tooooo many sea lions, but just one.
Amazing footage Captain Josh, along with informative commentary. Your knowledge, passion and ability to share it in a clear way are what makes you a great guide.
Thank you so much! It's much appreciated!

The orcas were obviously playing around and not after the sea lion for food because they were wasting way more energy than the sea lion was worth. Heck, the orcas were probably showing off or the humans. Considering a pod of orcas can bring down Blue Whales, that sea lion never stood a chance.
That single male Steller Sea Lion probably weighed around 2000lbs, and made a very good meal for them. They're very efficient at swimming through the water, so the energy expended on this hunt was a lot less than you think, and the amount of fat on that Sea Lion more than made worth it. There are at least ten ecotypes of Orca around the world, feeding on a variety of different prey types, and even individual pods that specialize in a single prey species. This particular pod doesn't come into our area very often, but when they do we've only ever see go after Steller Sea Lions. We've got some other more local pods, and one of them seems to prefer Harbor Porpoise, and the other Harbor Seals. This pod seems specialized at taking down Steller Sea Lions, and considering they seem fat and healthy I'm gonna guess that they are able to get plenty of energy out of the food they eat.
I can just hear that sea lion screaming Sparta!!
Holy cow that was one big fish
@@deadGrlz206 biggest I’ve ever had!
2 hours fighting. The sea lion strength and stamina is simply amazin
What???? How can you throw away dinner like that???? A fish like that will last you the winter months. Fish and chips!!!!
@@alexdemetriades401 we caught a bunch of Halibut that day; we kept the ones best suited for eating, and released the ones best suited for making more halibut for the future!
Hopefully someone sees this question. On a fish like this that weighs 290lbs, how much meat do you get off of it? Is is too big to eat? Is there a sweet spot for weight if you want to eat it? Or a fish like this is it a trophy fish catch and release type of thing?
@@JulianGonzalez1974 hello! Off a halibut this size, there’s some variation in how much meat you get, starting with the relative condition of the fish. A fat fish will get you more meat than a thin one. As a general rule though, I usually get between 45 and 50% meat off of a fish. I like them under a hundred pounds for eating; this one was definitely a trophy/release fish.
Like a macabre dance. Nature can be beautiful even in death.
Wait they can't even kill a sea lion without first beat it? Kinda lame. Too much mysticism over orcs just for this.
@@ImNotLuthien I’m not sure I understand your comment? They took their time about taking down a hazardous prey animal, using numbers and wits to avoid injury. What’s not impressive about that?
Doesn't look that big. We caught a huge one that big in Alaska, and they asked us if we wanted to throw it back.
@@JK-br1mu the chumbag filled a five-gallon bucket… Yeah, the big ones aren’t as edible and they’re the breeders. It’s better for both the table and the halibut population to release the large ones.

They're trying to drown it. The safest way for them to kill it.
So sad that the sea lion was asking for human help and didn't know they prefer to watch the drama of its slow death. Only consolation is that, it fought bravely to the end even though totally outnumbered.
@@tangbesitangbesi7009 I think it’s equally sad that people have such a poor understanding of wildlife that they do not realize how immoral, unethical, inhumane and illegal it would be to intervene under circumstances like this.
@@AlaskaWhaleanddronetours it's questionable who has a poorer understanding of wildlife. But to call me inhumane, immoral can only be done by people of the trade
@@tangbesitangbesi7009 I run a wildlife ecotourism company. I have thousands of hours on the water observing wildlife, more hours than anyone else in Alaska observing them with a drone, and an extensive amount of education in these animals. Your background is what, exactly? To help the Sea Lion, would be to hurt the Orca. They’re also trying to survive, and they must kill and eat Sea Lions to do that. Which animal do I help? The animal struggling to survive? Or the animals struggling to survive?
