Had my weddings reception in the hall
Really enjoyed that. Fellow Londoner
To a foreigner who's never been to London, but knows exactly what the real London looks like, the city skyscrapers on the left of the Tower of London do absolutely not belong.
@somerandomvertebrate9262 Hi There. I get exactly what you mean! I guess, us Londoners have "just grown used to them." I definitely prefer the old, over the new though = much more charm & character.
From australia. Several years ago was walking all around that area without knowing about the history. I love it. We have no history going back that far over here. It just blows me away. Thank you.
@roncasperson1312 Hi There. Its a great little area, isn't it! We are spoiled for history, in London. I'm with you on that = even having lived in London, all my life "the history & beautiful architecture = still amazes me." No problem at all, really glad you enjoyed the tour + thanks for the lovely comment.
And what ethnic group may I ask dumps all the rubbish?
Very interesting. Thank you.
@mancroft Hey there. Thanks for that. I'm glad you found it interesting! No problem at all = its a pleasure, to share London's history.
Glad my names not on it 😂😂😂
Thanks for that Luke. My mother came from Chalk Farm but she and my grandparents moved out to the suburbs after being bombed out during the war and never returned to live there.
@heliotrope6217 Hi there. No problem at all, glad you enjoyed. Ah rite, a,lot moved out due to bombing + slum clearances after the war. This is a fascinating little patch of London, & still more to come, from Bermondsey.
There was a lot of bomb damage in the City but I lived there from 1947and went to primary school there during the long period before anything was rebuilt.
@@mavisemberson8737 Hi Mavis. Yes indeed = surprising really "how long, sone of these bombsite, were around." Took a long time to recover, didn't it = financially & on architecturally.
I lived in upton park and used to walk to Plaistow through that alleyway where that first flat are 04:06 , all the time and lived there for 28 years and i cannot remember a pub being there what was it called?

London River. The Pool of London used to be a tidal port and the bridge opened and closed when needed. for passage with the tides . I''m sorry it is a rare sight now.
@mavisemberson8737 Good afternoon Mavis. Yes, you're not wrong there "I've been reading up on the activity of the bridge, in yesteryear." As it'll be featuring soon, in an upcoming post! Thank you so much for posting this video. I am learning the family history of William Whitmore (1525-1593) and it is thought that both he and his wife were buried at this Church but records were lost in the Great Fire of 1666. I hoped that someone might have posted a video about the Church and maybe the Whitmore family. (They were merchant adventurers.) I am a distant descendant now in Corpus Christi,Texas. Again, thank you.
@judywanda Hi Judy. No problem af all, glad you enjoyed/found it informative. @cassiecavataio2982 Hi Cassie. Yes indeed, I'm totally with you on that! Beautiful + literally oozing with history. This is a very special place.
Very enjoyable video. Two observations: the total formality of attire and the absence of power poles and cables. How things have changed in 120 years.
@brucestorey3400 Hi Bruce. Thanks, glad you enjoyed the video! Yes indeed, well observed "& not a single head, buried in a mobile phone." Massive changes, & 120 years, isn't all that long "in the scale of things" is it. God only knows, what they'd make of our world today.

When I was 14/15 years old (1972/73) I did some brass rubbings of the Urswicks Family Tomb in this church. So no emails or online access form, we didn't even have a phone at home so I couldn't ring. So I knocked on the Vicars door to his house and asked if I could do some brass rubbings, of which he said no problems. He let me in and I got out my black cobblers wax and paper and got some nice brass rubbings. I later put them in a cardboard tube and there they stayed for decades in the back yard shed. I later found out that you couldn't brass rub any more as they were wearing out the metal plates on top of the tombs. So I asked my Dad if my rubbings were still around and he admitted they got chucked out years ago when he was having a clear out...Still happy memories of that time.
@DagenhamGilly Hi there. Sorry for my late reply = Had a lot going on recently. That's a great memory to have, & thanks for sharing it! Yes, sadly brass rubbing "has become a thing of the past." The old-school vicars, were much more easy going. Same with bell tower visits = once usually an easy ask & permission given = nowadays, near impossible "due to health & safety."
go to lagos you see newish statues to their slave traders, squares and roads named after them , children's books referring to them as national hero's. These were black slave traders , who fought the British to keep the slave trade
@bearsagainstevil Hi there. Sorry for my late reply = had a lot going on recently. Yes, indeed "that's the thing with slavery = an ugly truth that doesn't often get aired" = That the slaves, were mostly sold into slavery, by the own people. Same with free African Americans & Native Americans, owning slaves. No excuse, but we were the first country to end it.
Weird to think of an anniversary of death.
@rathertiredofthemess2841 Hi There. A common terminology. But, get what you mean ✌️
Interesting that Elizabeth I, Mary I, and Mary, Queen of Scots are buried close together, since in life none of the three women liked each other.
@JimMac23 Hi Jim. That was the doing of King James VI of Scotland & I of England! Mary was originally the sole occupant, of the vault "she now shares with her Sister Mary." When Elizabeth died, she was originally laid to rest with her grandparents Henry VII & Elizabeth of York, on their vault." When James became king, "he'd earmarked Elizabeth's place for himself = & had her moved into her Sister's vault" adding indult to injury, by placing Elizabeth's coffin on top of Mary's. He then had his executed mother moved from Peterborough Cathedral to Westminster in 1606. Having fine tombs built for the much loved & mourned Elizabeth "with but the scarcest mention of Mary I." & had an "ever so slightly larger one, built for his own mother, Mary Queen of Scots." I'll do a piece on Elizabeth I, being moved, when I carry on with my "restless royal Corpses series." ✌️
Barking road A124
Margaret Beaufort was one amazing lady! I have a lot of respect for her. Thanks.
@monicacall7532 She was indeed "an intensely clever lady + the heart of a Lion." I often think of her, as the true founder of The Tudor dynasty. No problem at all = always happy to share interesting history, like that of Margaret Beaufort 🙂✌️
