JHS Notaklon Build and Demo
I build the JHS Notaklon with my son, Syd Lee. It’s a really fun Pedal to build and we had a great time doing it. Skip to the end if you just want to hear what it sounds like. I think it sounds amazing.

I wish that you showed the electronics more. My 1997 model has different electronics, or maybe they’re the same but the markings are different. Either way, they are really great guitars. I think that I bought it on sale for $500 at Christmas time in 1997. And based on the research that I have done on the serial number, it was also made in Korea.
@harveyvlach6752 I can do a dive into the electronics. That's so cool that you also own one! Really awesome guitar.
Are you syd dad
@@IsmaelDiaz-qg7yl Yes! Hi Ismael! 👋
Hi
I’m his friend from school
Very cool! And what a great full sound!
My main guitar is a 95 ish RG550 LTD I’ve had it since 96 and it’s still my number one, nothing has beat it out. I’ve played more expensive guitars and of course cheaper ones. The premium line is very nice close to Japanese quality fit and finish but the hardware isn’t as good on the premiums if they put edge original and edge Lo pros they would be as rock solid as the Japanese stuff the Indonesian Ibanez at least the premiums are very nice guitars.
@brandonjackson5865 I have yet to mess around with the premiums. I sort of skipped line and jumped right to the higher end Japanese models. But collecting gear like one does, i may find a premium the looks good enough to purchase
@brandonjackson5865 The RG550 was known to be a very well built axe. I'd be interested to see how it feels compared to some other ibanez guitars of the same era.
@@ChristopherLeeShreds honestly the new indo stuff is pretty close as far as feel and fit and finish, mine could be considered one of the first reissues I guess because it wasn’t part of the original run and mine has the AANJ heal ( I think I prefer it ) and I’m not sure exactly what version of Wizard is on mine it doesn’t have the cracking around the locking nut bolts on the back of the neck that’s so common, mine also doesn’t have any paint cracks around the neck pocket most bolt ons have, it’s a very high quality guitar mine has a bound neck and headstock with the embossed Ibanez logo and Cosmo black hardware. I had a RG720QM for a couple years and they neck profile was a little different but still very comfortable, it had the ball ended frets and it was a good playing guitar and actually a whole lot pretty than “Reggie” that’s what I call my old black 550 . I want an original run 550 or if I get lucky an original 565. I wasn’t ever impressed with the Korean and early Indonesian Ibanez, they were fine they just didn’t have the same care put into the fretwork and factory setup I guess but the Premiums have always been impressive. They were a few lower spec’d MIJ RG450 I believe that were MIJ but they had the lo trs instead of the edge but I would imagine the necks and fretwork would be what you expect from a 90s MiJ Ibanez. I honestly don’t know if you’re missing much with your blue RG350, if you get good reliable service out of it. I do think there might be some magic or mojo in the OG late 80s RG550 but I haven’t played enough of them to say for sure. The Genesis is also an excellent guitar for the money and it’s MIJ still. People seem to love JEM Juniors , but I haven’t been impressed with them either, but also I’m not a huge Vai fan so I can see how they scratch an itch, if they did a JEM JR with disappearing pyramid inlays I’d probably have to have one though. I think those are the coolest Ibanez inlays ever, mine has I guess acrylic inlays shark tooth and I have always thought they were the only part of the guitar that looks cheap, I’ve seen better looking mother of toilet seat shark tooth’s on the lower end RGs
I would probably go ALL Ibanez, too, if I had to pick only one brand. But you don’t have any of the hollow-bodies (George Benson style). They’re some great jazz guitars!
@@GeorgeTsouris A George Benson style Hollowbody is definitely next for the ibanez collection!
Hi syd dad
@@IsmaelDiaz-qg7yl 👋 Hello!
On the dark Esquire circuit reduce the value of the cap that's going to ground and you'll get volume back, try from .05 or whatever's in there to .01. More volume less capacitance so you could go down to 5 nanofarads. The resistor is the resonant peak and the cap in series with the resistor is the resonant frequency. Leave the resistor, try a .03uf. Want more highs try .02uf. The resistor will keep the emphasis on the lows.
getting mine in village amber today
@NickDeMolayMusic That's Awesome! Great color choice 👌 👍 👏
I agree! They both have a great unique vibe.
Both are cool!
Inexpensive guitars are great!
@@GeorgeTsouris I do enjoy having something to tinker on! Thanks for watching George!
So cool!!
I have the same guitar. But I think it has the wrong neck plate, date is 83. Nice playin man.
@buck7477 Thanks for watching! In 1983 Ibanez had the RS100 & the RS205. They had maple fret boards and a more traditional SSS pick up. If yours is like mine with the Rosewood board and hot rail style SSS pick ups then it is most definitely an 85. Either way gotta love the 80s ibanez line up!!
I have this one also! Little too much single coil noise. Thinking about installing a hotrail in the bridge! My neck plate shows 1983. Think it’s the wrong neck plate! Uhg!
What did I watch for the algorithm to me recommended this?

No, but thank you for watching!

What yours weigh Christopher ?
The Esquire comes in at 7lbs 6 Oz. Nice little chunk of Ash.
Great vid bud! Ive got 1980 Tokia LPC, 1972 Greco LPC, 1978 Aria Pro II. Im serching for a 1975 Ibanez now :)
Gotta love those lawsuit Les Pauls. Thank you for watching
It's me Jordan
Hi Jordan! 👋
What's up Chris
Whats up!!!! 😊
Dude, that shit at the beginning was sick as all hell. I wish I was a 7 string guy now lol
THANKS FOR WATCHING!!!
Great video, the guitar sounds great. What is the purpose of the switch.
In what would be the neck position it is actually a dark position or treble roll off. The middle position gives you access to the tone knob. While the bridge position bypasses the tone control giving you a straight connection to the bridge. The bridge position is the brightest of them all.
That seems to be very effective. I noticed in the video you switched to the bridge position once and it was much darker, but I wouln't have guessed it had three distinct functions. I wouldn't have even looked at this guitar because of the single pickup, but i have changed my mind now thanks to your video.
@d3dude I really appreciate your kind words. I hope you add a Esquire to your collection. Truly amazing sounding guitars and they honestly, do make you play differently.
Looks beautiful You and your Dad did a good job.
Thank you for watching!
Trippiest editing ever. I cried when you showed those pick ups with the sound effects hahaha guitar looks great you and your father did an amazing job
Hahaha! Glad you enjoyed the video. Thank you for watching.
is the neck chunky? its pretty hard to find a thin neck on the Jap imports
cool guitar it sounds awsome! i have a music channel too check it out, hit me with a subbie if you feel inclined! im trying to grow my channel, its a tough grind though lol!
Sounds Great!
It really does!! Thank you for watching!
Nice find! In 1983 when I was 17 years old I bought a creme Ibanez LesPaul custom because it looked just like Randy Rhodes 74 Gibson. I still have it, love it & play it today. Mine is from September 1975. A couple differences are on the Head stock same as yours just like a Gibson but between the Ibanez logo & the truss rod cover it has the 5-piece diamond & the truss rod cover says Custom. On the neck plate above Made in Japan it has a serial number which is how I traced it to 9/75. I have a 1972 Ibanez V with no serial. Your LP must be from earlier in 75 before they started putting serial numbers on them. Ours are the reason Gibson sued Ibanez because they changed the headstock shape in 76 or maybe 77.
Sounds like you have an amazing guitar!!
Can can you let syd in Videos it's me Jordan Syd's friend from daycare
Hi Chris it's me Jordan lee your videos good especially the guitar ones and Syds
Yeah this is a jam I love it.
Thank you for watching!
Good stuff. Makes me want to go out and get a Fender Esquire.
Thank you for watching!
So watching, on the high action, i got mine down with 8 gauge strings on it to about 2.5mm and it still plays nice. Took some truss rod adjustment. I think if I lightly take a block sander on the last 8 frets, I could get it down below 2mm.
That's great! I usually jam on 9s. Never tried 8 gauge. Sounds like you have yours dialed in! Thanks for watching!
So my big issue with this guitar is the Quantum pickups in it. They had a, really flat and hollow feel to it. And I only have one otjer complaint and that's the built in spring reverb. The springs are awful, but was a $10 fix for noiseless, and I added shrink tubing to them to further isolate and chance of noise on them. My older Japanese Ibanez has the V serious pickups Dimarzio built for them here in the US and they sound killer. But again, amazing guitar, especially for the price.
I agree! You get a lot of guitar for the price. This particular guitar does not have noticeably loud springs. I think I may have been a bit lucky. Besides a quick truss rod/bridge adjustment, the guitar was very playable out of the box. The quantum pick ups are not the best but I think they sound great all things considered. They are ceramic. But for a beginner or intermediate player, this guitar checks off a lot of boxes. And like you said, after a few mods, maybe even swap the pickups for something alnico, you would have a top notch axe. Thanks for watching!!!
@@ChristopherLeeShreds for sure. And man like you say, entry level price for a guitar that plays inches from my vintage Jap ones that cost 5x what this one costs. Honestly my jap ones have been played so much over the years they need refret horribly. The only thing I really feel in play difference though is the Wizard III is 1mm thicker than the old Wiz II. Amazing guitar and thanks again for the entertainment. :)
awesome paying man this guitar looks and sounds incredible been looking to buy a new electric guitar for a while now i might settle on this one. would you recommend it
I absolutely recommend it. I'm going to put out a more in-depth video on my thoughts with this guitar but I think it's a great instrument. It's absolutely worth every penny that I paid.
I picked one up about 3 weeks ago. Love it!
That's great! Congratulations on your new gear!
nice job thank you
