      Ah, but be careful about the order of events here! I would rephrase that to "barrier damage can also be found in patients who have been diagnosed with Celiac's disease". 'Celiac's disease' is just a word and drives nothing, however once barrier damage has occured, Celiac's becomes one potential diagnosis.

    In my experience, estrogen not only increases endotoxin levels in the bowel, it also makes the gut more permeable/leaky. So, effectively, estrogen is the ‘thermostat’ on my MCAS/EDS/RA/POTS symptoms. I treat my chronic estrogen dominance with progesterone (bio identical), hydrogen rich water, ENBREL, naproxen and sulfasalazine, and also thyroid (T4/T3 mix) and red light. I think you’re right ME is a result of environmental poisoning, and subsequent metabolic shift from oxidative metabolism (producing 72 ATP + CO2) to inefficient glycolysis (producing much less ATP and Lactic acid). So it’s a chronic metabolic disorder, which can be triggered by simply too much breathless exercise. I’ve often noticed people get ME when they feel they’re at their fittest, or when they’re chronically shifting their metabolism into a glycolytic state by sustained breathless exercise, which is what also triggers asthma attacks. Dr Ray Peat was my mentor. It is a chronic energy deficit at the cellular level, causing adaptive mechanisms, that help in the short term, but which cause chronic illness when the body can no longer return to homeostasis. I see many parallels in what you’re saying. Progesterone has been life changing for me, and can also be used by men (in smaller doses).

    Hi Scott. Thanks for this great info. I live in London U.K., hope to be able to move away soon but am trying to find the Valspar tintable latex paint and can’t find it here. Do you know if there is an equivalent in the U.K. please? Or could I get any paint that says latex? My dad wants white, will that be okay as long as it’s not matt or eggshell? Thanks so much.

    • @ScottTheScientist
      @ScottTheScientist 4 місяці тому

      I appreciate your comment very much! I am always happy to hear people are being aware of what they're putting in their homes and breathing in every day. When you search for Valspar paint, be sure to search for "Signature Tintable" paint. It says "scuff shield technology" on the label. I don't know if there's anything comparable because these companies don't like to disclose their ingredients. But I think the scuff shield paint is great because it hardens to strongly, it likely traps all the ingredients in the surface really well. Do not just get any paint that says latex, you will go through a nightmare when you can't tolerate it and have to move constantly. If you're going with white paint, please please please do not use pure white. Use a slightly off-white or light color. And yes, avoiding any matte paint is critical. It's better to have pure white semi-gloss than it is to have off-white but still matte. I highly recommend buying a small sample of the paint, then painting a small piece of drywall and see how it dries. Rub your finger across it and be sure there is no grainy/textured feel or any white residue that comes off on your finger. It's really worth doing it the right way I promise, and once you find a paint that works for your and is safe, then you have it forever!

    • @ScottTheScientist
      @ScottTheScientist 4 місяці тому

      @@natasam9170 That is an excellent question! Although I have no proof of the hazards of zinc oxide or magnesium oxide, I think that their properties would be very similar to titanium dioxide so I would avoid it. Zinc and magnesium are lighter weight than titanium so they might be removed from the body slighter easier, but I think the safest thing to do when you're already chronically ill is to avoid suspect substances if there's no need to be using/consuming them. It's a good thing to stop using in face creams, but the scientific literature shows that absorption by topical use or ingestion is lower than inhalation, so inhalational exposure is going to be the top concern for these particles. Please keep in touch and let me know how your journey goes!

    Thanks for your video - likely explanation for our adult daughters reaction to S Williams ProMar 200 no VOC paint. She lives in a building very close to our house - about 10 feet. We painted the inside walls and ceiling of our house and she had a terrible reaction even though she never comes in our house. It stopped our renovation in its tracks over a year ago. Our furniture is still in storage and we're living in two rooms because we're afraid to put down the ceramic tile that we've already paid for and had delivered. The layout of the house is such that they could cut the tile outside about 100 feet away from my daughter's building, but we're too nervous to go forward.

      Steve - my heart goes out to you and your family, I know exactly how tough and horrible finding safe housing can be. I can try to help you as best I can. What type of sheen was used? If you used flat/mate paint, then the particulates are going to be a problem even with "zero VOC paint". My parents had renovated their basement 3 years ago with white mate paint and I've taped off the doorway and even if I smell around the gaps of the door, my head feels like it clogs up and my pain gets worse, so it's something that doesn't really go away over time. I think the particulate issue is worse with zero VOC paint than regular paint actually. Also, I think the darker colors of paint will have more VOCs as well. I won't use white paint or dark paint so I feel safest around a very light shade. FYI - zero VOC paint is not actually zero VOC, it just means the paint doesn't offgas a known list of approximately 20 chemicals deemed hazardous in paint. So VOCs can sometimes be worse in zero VOC paint than regular (it's criminal frankly). Given it's still a problem over a year later, it sounds like a particulate issue more than a VOC issue because VOCs from paint usually go away in a couple months. I think the only option would be to first repaint the place. I recommend Valspar Tintable Latex Interior Paint + Primer because it has a 'scratch resistant coating' that will trap all the particulates on the surface. Then air the place out with lots of fans for a few weeks to flush any particulates out of the area. The tile work should be fine, although I recommend lining up the tiles outside, wiping them down, and letting the wind blow any particulates off of them for at least a few days before you install them. Definitely don't cut any inside the house. I hope this helps you.

      @@ScottTheScientist research has said that LC or ME/CFS could have been caused by viral infection, environmental toxin exposure, bacteria or parasite exposures....any of which could 'turn on the Epstein Barr virus' that had been held dormant until it was triggered again. Navauix lab (UCSD) found that the danger response cell in the mitochondria is stuck in the on' switch'. TILT (toxicant induced loss of tolerance) by Claudia Miller out of U TX-santo antonio. The toxicant induced the malfunction of the mast cells. You should hear Lawrence Afrin talk about mast cells and how unlucky it would be for all these patients to have x, y, z. LC is probably diagnosed for the statistical group so they can keep track of what was possibly caused by the virus itself or been a side effect of vax. Unfortunately, outside of that there is basically no resources or help at either local, state, or federal levels. You can try applying for disability, but it's almost impossible to get. Greetings Scott. Thank you for your study and work, and for sharing your research and expertise (especially the prior video regarding Titanium Dioxide and it’s impact on our cells and our health. I’ve shared that video widely. What kind of paint would you recommend that you feel is safest for those of us with Chronic Fatigue and severe MCS? I certainly don’t want to use any paint with VOCs and/or Titanium Dioxide or any other nano-particles. I have reacted in the past to low VOC and no VOC paints, and I’ve seen that paints (like Clay and Milk and Chalk) often have nano in them. I’ve also heard to stay with lighter paints, as VOCs increase as pigment increases. Please advise. Thank you.

    • @ScottTheScientist
      @ScottTheScientist 7 місяців тому

      Hi Jamie, this is an excellent question thank you for asking! I have tried all the "eco friendly" paints and they do not work! Paint is such a major issue. I've been exposed to VOCs of all kinds as well as several different kinds of nanoparticles and the nanoparticles are WAY worse. I would not risk being exposed to them for even 1 second for any reason. So to protect you from that, I would recommend: Valspar Tintable Latex Interior Paint + Primer. It is made with "scratch resistant technology", but what this does is hold nanoparticles together MUCH stronger than normal paint so it doesn't fall off and contaminate the air (it's reasonably cheap too). Yes, I would agree with your friend that said dark paints have more VOCs so you should go lighter, but also stay away from pure matte white paint (make sure you only use glossy). I haven't been exposed to every color paint so I can't recommend a particular color, although I did have a positive experience with teal, that it did not bother me even with a short drying time. I hope this information is helpful to you.

    • @ScottTheScientist
      @ScottTheScientist 7 місяців тому

      Also, I've heard great things about ECOS, being a zero VOC paint. It's on my to-do list to try some outside this summer. The Valspar may bother you more when applying the paint, but long term is safest option if you can tolerate the VOCs because it protects from nanoparticles. If you can't tolerate the Valspar at all, the ECOS is probably your best bet, just make sure to stick with glossy.

    • @jalanovio
      @jalanovio 7 місяців тому

      Thank you for your informative reply. Is ECOS free of nano? And the products you recommended from Valspar (primer and paint) is low or zero VOC and won’t trigger MCS after it’s dried and aired out? Also, the Valspar is tintable… but do you agree that the darker pigments added that the higher the VOC level? Thank you again! I’ve shared your work in both MCS groups I’m in, as well as other places.

    • @ScottTheScientist
      @ScottTheScientist 7 місяців тому

      @@jalanovio ECOS is not free of nano (in fact I've never seen a paint that is). However, it is OK to have this in paint. The question is, once it is dry, will these NPs flake/fall off or will it hold solid? You can test it by first running your finger over the paint when dry and see if it has a grainy feel to it (if it does its no good), and then secondly try to scratch it with your fingernail. If it scratches/falls off easily, then it's no good. The goal is to make a surface that is smooth, hard, and durable so all the NPs in the paint will stay trapped and not enter air circulation. Valspar is not low/zero VOC, however there is no smell once it is dried (although depending on how much/which color you use that may change). ECOS is low/zero VOC, but it doesn't have the hard/protective coating that the Valspar does and may cause NPs to be released (I don't know because I haven't used it). That's why the Valspar is my #1 recommendation and ECOS is my #2.

    • @ScottTheScientist
      @ScottTheScientist 8 місяців тому

      No offense taken, that's an excellent question! I touch on this subject a bit at the end, so my answer is yes and no. Yes, in the way that all conventional treatments and pharmaceuticals will be totally ineffective. Pharmaceuticals are toxins that block or turn on pathways, and that is not beneficial because the body is already operating the best it can to compensate for the damage. But no, in the way that there are potential treatments that may be beneficial. In terms of epithelial barrier, I would say VOC avoidance is KEY (regardless of trigger), nebulization of placental stem cells could potentially help repair/regenerate, and I've also heard of this inhalable antioxidant mixture for CFS that could also be beneficial, but I'm less confident in this. However, because the barrier is what is impacted, I think that if some treatment is found, topical treatments are likely to be more effective. In regards to removing these nanoparticles, the key will be increasing bioavailability (through lymphatic massage) and then removing them with blood draws being the only way I currently know how, although some plasmapheresis like system could be developed at some point, but it's not even worth trying that now because we don't know the size, shape, and properties of these particles yet. Theoretically, some type of binding agent that binds titanium dioxide and signals for it's removal could be beneficial, but it's not clear if this would have any degree of benefit for particles that are clogged in lymph nodes and such.

      @@ScottTheScientist would you agree that it could or would still be helpful to do as much as possible to reduce toxin overload and assist the body’s lymphatic system as much as possible? Beyond avoidance of VOCS, uch as avoiding all processed foods, eating fresh organic foods as much as possible, taking multi vitamins and other supplements and sweating to help the body detox as much as possible? I have been living with MCS for about a decade now and I’ve found that while I’ve considerably worsened in the past 2 years, I feel much better physically when I avoid all processed food and ingredients including sugar, gluten, soy, dairy, alcohol, corn, and other filler ingredients. I’ve also switched to the most natural hygiene products can possibly find.

      @ScottTheScientist 8 місяців тому

      @@Husker94 Actually not all of that is beneficial. MCS and ME/CFS have a lot of overlap and most people with MCS deal with CFS like symptoms which means this particle exposure is an extremely common occurrence for people with MCS. People with ME/CFS live in a 'hypometabolic state' that is done purposefully. Anything that is done to speed up metabolism/exertion will cause a worsening in condition. That's why people with CFS will initially feel better after taking supplements and find they crash later on. So these supplements and even high sugar organic foods might initially feel good, but they will "turn the machinery back on" and feel good initially but long term cause worsening. This is bad for MCS because it will increase respiratory rate which will increase VOC exposure and it's bad for CFS because it will cause sympathetic activation which will tighten muscles and increase particle-mediated mechanical damage. Avoiding processed food will be good, but I would recommend the keto diet. In regards to sweating, use of things like sauna (from experience) will "move particles around" in the body, but it doesn't really get rid of them. I advise against sauna unless you're going through a bad low point that day and you need something to get you out of it. Avoiding processed food and sugar will be good though, but getting yourself in better air quality is always going to be the #1 most beneficial thing.

      @@ScottTheScientistDo you think putting a high quality air purifier in the house would be beneficial?

    • @ScottTheScientist
      @ScottTheScientist 6 місяців тому

      @@sleeverobot Theres essentially two types of air purifiers out there: 1) one with extremely small pore size (like Air Doctor 3000) that is really good at removing all the dust and pollen in the air, but its not good enough to remove nanoparticles or VOCs. 2) one with extremely high carbon content, like 30 pounds of carbon that is large and expensive. this might be able to remove some VOCs in the house, but keep in mind theres no way it can remove all of them, and also VOCs are constantly offgassing so it would need to be constantly running. So theres a marginal benefit from using one of the higher end ones, but its a very limited benefit. If it were good enough to make people better, more people would be using them

      @@maryr7593 Hi Mary! So this particular video is a research review and this length of time is required to cover the subject, many other research reviews are the same length. Also, many people like to have a deep dive an understand all the different aspects so my UA-cam channel is the place for them to do that. I labeled all the different topics of each part of the video with time points, you can read the transcript if that’s easier, and I included links to written outlines in the description. I post some shorter videos to my instagram and TikTok pages, but this is where I like to be more in depth! Thank you for your interest in this subject :)

    Wow, your video is fascinating and explains so much! When I was in my early 20s, I worked in an industrial lab doing testing for a company that made gaskets. I had to use MEK to degrease gasket samples that had been previously heated in motor oil. I did use the MEK under a fume hood and wore rubber gloves when handling it, but I then had to carry the samples over to the various machines that I used to perform the tests, so being exposed to the MEK fumes that outgassed from the samples was inevitable. I never considered that I should be wearing a respirator, and I was never offered one. I also frequently used Ti02 powder when using a lab mill to combine ingredients to make samples of new materials that could be used for making gaskets. Of course, some the Ti02 powder would get blown into the air when the mill was forcefully mashing it into the solid ingredients. I was never told to wear a dust mask and I didn't know at the time that Ti02 was dangerous. I ended up developing symptoms when I was still working there around the age of 23. I went to many doctors, and as you'd expect, they weren't very helpful and were sometimes downright condescending. One doctor at that time ended up testing me for EBV, and she told me that I had antibodies for it, so it was possible that I'd recently been infected with it. My C3 complement levels have always been low since that time, and I always have positive homogeneous ANA tests. The fatigue and malaise from this condition is unreal. It went somewhat into "remission" for a few years, although I never got back to feeling 100%, maybe more like 75%. I've had a few more flare ups since then, and am currently going through one right now. I feel bad that so many people are suffering with Long COVID right now, but I think that because of that, it's bringing more attention to CFS/ME. It will probably push the research along faster now since so many people are affected. It's a shame that long COVID had to become a thing before many people in the medical community started taking these illnesses seriously. Anyway, I just wanted to share my experience and say thank you for doing such thorough research and sharing it with everyone.

      Hi, thanks for your feedback! Yes I was prepared for this, I am aware that it is long. Unfortunately, because it is a research review it must be long in order to get all the points out there. Also, because there's a lot of soft, suggestive evidence, I don't think it would be as convincing in a shorter version. However, in the future I may make a shorter version, and have people reference back to this longer version, but this is my first video. However, feel free to skip ahead sections that are labeled on the slider, or use the "transcript" button to read the transcript, or you can click the google doc in the description to see the figures and some main bullet points!

      Take some notes of what you watched and take note of the time stamp you leave off at. Chunking is what most ppl do...determine what you can manage. Sometimes you may have to rewatch the vid to review but it should sound familiar esp with your notes. Another idea is to listen to the first part while doing a monotonous brainless task (folding clothes, matching socks, dishes, etc) and then watch the next chunk. I find that though I can go for a long time but if my hands arent busy with a brainless task...mind will wander or I will literally fall asleep. My brainless task is online window shopping...just locating what items were at what location...no reading descriptions, etc. Others do knitting or crafting...it helps them focus on what was said. Some ppl use the rate of speech tool...to take in a but more chunk at a time. Hope it helps.

    Inhalation of heated titanium dioxide is rough for me. Titanium dioxide is common in coffee creamer, which is added to hot liquid. I had a major acute toxicity event with some cookie dough containing titanium dioxide baking. How did this one substance get removed (late in process) from a recent CA bill that banned some food coloring chemicals?

      Yes, I even heard from someone a couple days ago who got substantially worse after drinking mineral water (has a very high silica content). You should look up the lawsuit thats been going on against Skittles for not removing TiO2 in their food. I think it's just all corporate lobbying/manipulation.

    How much of long cvirus is from the exposure to the increased use of disinfectants such as quaternary ammonium compounds?

    • @ScottTheScientist
      @ScottTheScientist 8 місяців тому

      That's an excellent question. It's impossible for us to say right now "how much" of it is due to any one particular chemical or substance. In all likelihood, the types of chemicals people are exposed to that cause long covid or CFS are likely different from person to person, which also explains some of the variation we see in symptoms between people. But we also don't know because no study has ever been done on the subject, nor are researchers aware of that being a factor. So the objective right now is to put pressure on researchers to study environmental factors in diseases such as Long COVID or CFS.
