Distinguished Speaker Series @SCIoI: Caleb Weinreb (Harvard Medical School)
“A seconds-long timescale in naturalistic behavior structures neural dynamics” by Caleb Weinreb (Harvard Medical School)
In this talk, Caleb shared his latest research on animal cognition and the prefrontal cortex (PFC). His study uses Motion Sequencing to reveal how mPFC activity aligns with behavior during social interaction and solitary exploration. Findings suggest that behavior states evolve on a timescale of seconds and impact neural dynamics.
Caleb Weinreb is a Neuroscience post-doc at Harvard Medical School. Watch his presentation at Science of Intelligence (SCIoI) which took place thanks to Mark Boon's invitation for his seminar "Quantitative Approaches to Behavior".

SCIoI researchers show: Sailfish and Seabirds hunting "together"
Переглядів 67Місяць тому
In the vast open ocean, large marine predators like sailfish and various seabirds often hunt in proximity, but their interactions remain largely unexplored. This video using high-resolution drone footage, as part of recent SCIoI studies, reveals that seabirds strategically time their attacks to coincide with sailfish strikes on fish schools. This method allows seabirds to more easily capture fi...

Distinguished Speaker Series @SCIoI: Iain Couzin - Collective Intelligence in Animals and Robots
Переглядів 5742 місяці тому
Today, we still know relatively little about how social interactions connect brains together-and thus how sensing and information processing arises in organismal collectives. Employing automated tracking, computational reconstruction of sensory information, biomimetic robotics, and immersive ‘holographic’ virtual reality (VR) experiments, Iain explores geometric principles of collective decisio...

I see not reason that as black hole in a complete simulated universe would not act like one in a real universe the only question is , is it necessary that there exist an ontology between them that excludes a result that is essentially different in each. Insects may not be consciouse if they do have a system that reaches criticality

The brain criticality hypothesis suggests that neural networks and thus, many aspects of brain activity self-organize into a critical state (Wilting and Priesemann, 2019). Critical states are unique configurations of physical systems that have been a central focus of statistical physics for more than a century. is there a relationship with IIT and the value of phi. if so then limits on phi can be set though graph theoretics. criticality is not reducible.

So marlins use the exact same strategy that explains the whacky black/white stripe 'anti-camouflage' paint scheme of the P51 Mustang fighter plain in WWII: They was so fast on the attack that they were difficult to identify, and they were being shot down by friendly fire. The result was that is was actually 'safer' to not be rocking camo colours.

Great lecture though, i think McCulloch-Pitts neural model wasn't all made up but maybe inspired by the exhitatory-inhibitory property of neurons which could produce some sort of gate mechanisms when the inputs are summed up, property being refined in the perceptron, and while later models incorporate some other characteristics like interneuron connectivity in RNNs or hierarchical filtering in CNNs, maybe a way of going forward could be account for some other complex qualities of neurons or networks, maybe in some extreme, neuromorphic computing or something more in the middle like Numenta's HTM neural model, but maybe something design more from the engineering point of view, like transformers.
