How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies | Review | Thai Tearjerker Movie
How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies (2024) is a huge hit in Thailand. This film about a boy trying to take care of his grandmother so that she will leave her inheritance to him, discusses the importance of family and spending time with your loved ones. This tear-jeaker comedy drama is in some ways like Buddhist propaganda for how to be a good person but it's also I great, simple film that is artfully created. This film is available on the asian Netflix site so you may need a VPN to view it.

We Need to Talk About the Los Angeles Hate

We Need to Talk About the Los Angeles Hate As the LA fires burned down half of our city, conservatives, MAGA, and general assh#*s including President-Elect Trump decided it would be a good time to post hateful comments essentially telling the people of California with their "woke liberal" agenda: "You deserved this" and "Trump was right." I try to discuss movies and stay away from politics but ...

Why is Squid Game Season 2 so bad? | Review A lot of people, me included are disappointed with Squid Game Season 2 (which the creator of the show himself admitted he only made for the money and pressure from Netflix). In this series review I discuss what I think went wrong with this season of Squid Game, including poor characterization, lazy plotting and more. There are some bright spots in the...

Why "Grave of the Fireflies" is so disturbing
Переглядів 3583 місяці тому
Should I show Grave of the Fireflies (1988) to my kids? Well.... My Halloween movie recommendation for the season is the most disturbing movie I've ever seen: Grave of the Fireflies. The honest answer is definitely don't show this movie to your kids, but then who is this animated movie (made by the studio that made My Neighbor Totoro for?) It's hard to say, it's a great film that is very emotio...
Didi by Sean Wang | Long live the family drama | Movie Review
Переглядів 7474 місяці тому
Didi directed by Sean Wang (2024), is a quiet family drama disguised as a coming-of-age comedy. While there are all the classic hallmarks of the coming-of-age film within Didi, the part of the film that feels the most significant is the relationship that Sean Wang develops between Didi and his female family members, how he relates to his grandmother (Nai Nai), mother, and sister. This is the as...

"The Bear" Season 3 was disappointing (and they knew it) | Review

Is "The Bear" Season 3 bad? "The Bear" Season 3 was disappointing and I think the creators knew it. So much of the plot is centered around how hard it is to achieve greatness and worries about how to keep the magic of creation. The show The Bear does this in the context of their new restaurant but I believe the creators and creatives on this show were trying to communicate to us the audience ab...

Abang Adik (2023) 富都青年 starring Wu Kang Ren 吳慷仁 and directed by Jin Ong is a Neo-Noir Crime Drama set in Malaysia. A Confucian Confusion 獨立時代 (1994) | directed by Edward Yang deconstructs romantic comedies in this film. I review this Taiwanese film with has recently received a beautiful 4k restoration. Edward Yang is one of the most well-known and significant Taiwanese directors and a director I love dearly, however every one of Edward Yang's films begins in such a way that I find the themes hard to follow,...
"The 8 Show" the next big Korean show | Review

The new Netflix series "The 8 Show" has obvious parallels to another popular Korean dark comedy, suspense, drama on Netflix - Squid Game. Is "The 8 Show" better? In some ways I think yes. I think "The 8 Show" has a better critique of class and economic inequality than Squid Game did. The metaphors and themes explored are more interesting and accurate. There are some flaws with the new Korean dr...
"Ripley" on Netflix Reminds Us What Prestige TV Is | Review

Ripley, streaming now on Netflix, reminds us what prestige TV is. In the early 2000s there was this idea that TV was going to be the salvation of narrative visual work. That promise never really materialized but every once and a while a show comes along that is so good it reminds us how great TV can truly be, something cinematic and artistic on every level. The editing, directing, writing and a...

Uncle Boonme Who Can Recall His Past Lives | A Must Watch Art Film From Thailand | Review
I find it really interesting that I find myself having a stronger dislike towards the snake than the pig despite the much more heinous crime.
Am I the only one who disliked the woman on the 5th floor ? Why was she only specifically angry at the man on the 6th floor ? Only because it reminded her of her past experience I don’t know how to explain it but she seemed selfish and the way she acted was just dumb , not KIND … 2nd floor lady was a better person
lost me at saying squid game is about "poor people would do anything for money"
I really liked the 8 show but I don't think I can watch it again. The violence was so extreme I had to look away from the screen more than once.
I think it’s an amazing show but the webtoons do it better in money game people COULD die and it also had a lot of basically political rants from the main character that really drove the points home
Hara executes someone else in order to set Celliers and Lawrence free, and by the sound of the name it was a Japanese or Korean soldier (there are Korean soldiers assisting the Japanese in the camp). He has to do this because Yonoi would not accept it otherwise, believing that where there is a crime (the smuggling of the radio into the camp) there must be a punishment, even if he knows the person to be punished (Lawrence) is not guilty. He admits as much to Lawrence under questioning from him when Lawrence understands that Yonoi plans to execute him.
I think Yonoi's love is one sided. but Celliers is aware of it and makes use of it to save a colleague.
More people watch drag race than the Olympics? Ur a clown. A billion people watch the Olympics
Ah yes an off handed joke must be taken very seriously
I also noticed what you noticed on his films, that he doesn't do exposition. In fact, he doesn't follow typical narrative, or at least distort it in some way, such where he puts conflict, drama, confrontation, and so on. It's all jumbled up, unlike most films where there are structure. And you are right, he does this to achieve realism. One thing to note, is Yang spent time in US, probably exposed with it's entertainent industry, say like NBA and MLB, and especially Hollywood. And what's common between those three, are spectacle, and ultimately, that is what he avoids in his films to achieve realism. He never heightens the moment, but he does it very subtley, and that has a profound effect, even better than heightening the moment. And basically, for my understanding, the film Confucian Confusion is a breakaway for his ideas and beliefs. The movie is a mockery towards himself, or on the principle "Art for Art Sake", and "Art with a Purpose". He belongs on the latter, and the movie is him criticizing himself, because he believes art should only be with purpose, or "Cure" as what the novelist character in that movie call which is very funny, and the movie is also him coming to terms that movie belonging in category "Art for Art Sake" are just as essential, and this is the reason why the film is so different with the rest of his movies. It is a combination of the two principle. It is very entertaining, super funny, yet at the same time, has purpose. I haven't watched all of his films, such mahjong and his two great masterpiece, and you may be right that he does have good actors rather than him nurturing them, but at the same time, I think the the bad acting on Confucian Confusion are intentional or he never bothers to fix it, as the movie are made to resemble elements from average, cringey taiwanese films, whose main purpose are solely for entertainment, and that is to add to it's comedy. To add, while I was watching the film, I noticed Qiqi resembled someone, and finally realizes she was made to look like Audrey Hepburn. The persona she showed outside, was the Audrey Hepburn on film, but her true self, which is different from what she showed outside, is the Audrey Hepburn in real life, and that was a fascinating duality, and duality is very present on this film, such as hypocrisy which is one of the main theme. And Qiqi also resembles amelie, and they almost have the same personality. I know Amelie has some inspiration from Chunking Express, but maybe this film also inspired Amelie.
Sakuragi is a genius, he beat the best team in japan in 6 months imao
To me this film could have been easily set in the emperor's private quarters. I never thought about the film in political terms but for sure it's about the patriarchy and the lot of all women in Chinese society. They are all second class, subservient people under men. The harem of this rich man becomes a parable of civic and home life with various classes and grades of people
Great review. I think the show referenced heavily on the concept of current reality shows where conflict and drama generated high ratings. However they salvaged this in the end by showing that the initial rope performance by no 1 generated and immense amount of hours.
Sorry but you are wrong about your last point. As a former Netflix executive I can tell you for sure that the trans character was forced upon the show runners due to the Hollywood agenda. I know you would like to think it’s not like that but it is like that.
Are you reeeeeeaaaaally a former Netflix executive? 🤨 sorry if I don’t just take your word for that.
Showgirls 💃🏻 😢
Whats the most recent movie that made you cry?
My love, don't cross that river
I watched the movie just now. If this is banned by china, the reason might be that china was not agreeable to the absolution of the japanese to the crimes they committed against the villagers. Instead, the lead innocent kind villager was killed by the same person he tried to save from execution in exchange for some grains that would feed the villagers for 2 years. It dampens the fighting spirit of the chinese in depicting a losing japanese army as victorious because they were pardoned by the western countries commitment to the potsdam agreement? That's the way i see it. It shows the villagers as very simple minded and did not see ahead that sleeping with the enemy in exchange for food is not a bright idea. I felt shockingly sad for the annihi, ation of the villagers because of their decision to exchange the japanese prisoners for food and just because there was a contract , they thought the japanese would abide by the agreement
To me this show was really great its more of a physiological thriller we can learn so much from it
One of my favorite movies. An amazing analysis of "Raise the Red Lantern'. I learned a lot from this video.
Thank you 🙏
the squid show series is the worst show ever and it promotes violence. Very bad show with no good values at all.
I have not read the books, I enjoyed what I was given from the show. Maybe season 2 will be more to your liking. 🤷🏼♂️
11:45 Netflix wanted a second season. I’m not surprised that they made the creators of the show add a transgender person. Think about it! It’s obvious. Not to mention that the director tried to find a transgender actress in South Korea but he was not able to. Netflix had a hand in this obviously 🙄
Even if it was Netflix’s idea I doubt anyone was forced. Bribed maybe 🤔 but also why does it matter? And why do you think Netflix wanted to include this character?
I watched it two times on consecutive days, its incredible how the emotional gut punch hit me twice but I had to watch it twice to get a better look at the details.
I've watch it twice maybe in a week span and i still cried both times
@r0ck_fr3sh how are you people able to rewatch this so many times 🤣
@@MintVolcano I didn't want to but my kids wanted me to. Did it for the kids lol
I love this film, pure art 🥰
Where can I watch this
I’d recommend not watching it, but Netflix should have it
Maybe I missed this in some recap of the rules of the game, but why did we have to store waste in a room instead of the big ass atrium?
I think they said nothing can come in or out of the rooms
I came to this drama for Ryu Joon Yeol. Was not disappointed.
Hard to have any sympathy for a city that full of pretentious people that call the Midwest flyover country and call the people uneducated.
Have you ever heard someone from LA actually say that? Or is that in your head. My family lives in the Midwest I love the Midwest. Minneapolis is pound for pound one the best cities on earth. I would never be rude to a midwesterner in a tragedy. Let’s stop with the sports team, division.
Only problem it is that it is left in cliffhanger. The hate will die down once s3 gets released
If they deliver a good S3 then I think you’re right
The biggest problem is Californians continue to elect politicians that are destroying the state.
I lived in LA for 2 yrs... worked in Watts, then Ktown, certainly not "elites only" Hollywood. I remember reading a novel where a guy from the city is arguing w/ someone fr the country, who is very dismissive about city people. He says: "You know, what you don't realize is that there are parts of this city that's even smaller than where you're from." I've met LA kids who've never seen the ocean, earnest hardworking adults in LA that can't afford a car; we are all trying to get by. Compassion + prayers to those suffering.
This is so true. Thanks for the compassion 🙏
Search "Design for Disaster" - The Story of The Bell Air Conflagration. Posted by LAFD. This is not the first time this scenario has played out. Even down to the Fire Hydrants with no water. The three reservoirs that held one million gallons each could have all been refilled 30 times by the large reservoir that was empty. If you accept their excuses you will have this happen again and again until you admit what the problem is. If you think it is man caused climate change then how are you going to get the Chinese, Russia, India and every third world nation to get on board with whatever the plan is.
Ok bro. Wondering if you even watched my video because it’s not even about why the fire happened. But do you and post your copy pasted conspiracy thing.
Yea, systemically slashing the LAFD's budget had nothing to do with how bad things are. I can see you are perfectly objective and reasonable 🤡
Dude. 100mph winds and no rain in 8 months probably had more to do with this BUT even as far as you are correct that's not the point. Obviously, there are things that could be improved with government management. During the Lahaina fires the government and Maui Electric f-ed up royally and the people there even won a lawsuit against them, essentially proving they were a huge part of the blame for those fires--- BUT if people went online and were like "We hate Maui, they got what they deserved" no one would stand for that. That is objectively insane and vile behavior. Why is it ok if it's LA? You want to criticize government preparations? Go to a city council meeting, don't tell people online you "Hate LA" and "They got what they deserved" especially under posts about donating to help victims.
Ahhhhh you're a woke liberal (kamala voter) who denies woke hollywood degeneracy is a thing. That's so f ing out of touch. For almost a decade its woke, racist agenda manufactured by hollywod is on full display for the world to see, except you. You are part of the reason why the whole country (all 50 states) shifted red. They despise people like you who are delusional and can't define what a woman is. I'll unsubscribe you. Shame, i've alwayed liked your reviews for years. Goodbye

This season was filled with so many obvious moments and just dumb moments....the plans this season made no sense and that took me out of it so many times..the plan at the end was just ridiculous
L reveiw you only speak for the gay community, not the majoirty
I did find this show quite disturbing near the end. in the first few episodes it gives the impression that this show will be about drama, scheming and the relationships between characters but then it just descends to violence and torture. I think regarding the entertainment aspect, as 7 said near the start, the viewers just want to see something real. I think the part that earned the most revenue in the show was 1’s circus performance in the last episode, which although risky, wasn’t violent so I think the audience wanted drama and violence is an easy way to achieve that (but a lot of the time in reality it wasn’t executed in an entertaining way).
without watching the wholel review, I know already which scene you were talking about that made you cry.
I stopped watching, when violence begun. That proves your point. I liked squid game more.
To me i think the violence wasn't just something the viewers wanted. I think of it as a weighted think. The viewers had a sense of humor, they liked the misunderstandings, they liked seeing everyone get along, they liked harmless games. But their retention was all the show runners wanted, so there was a slippery slope at play. Once violence DID happen, it became the meta. Not because people were happy laughing at all this, but because the characters they were invested in were suffering. Maybe they didn't even know they were the cause of the time going up. Or maybe they did, who knows. The point is, the audience being invested doesn't mean the audience is happy. They're in a way also captive. If both are suffering yet neither side wants to leave, who benefits? The show runners. They keep getting infinite payout they never have to give as prize money.
Its like they purposely wrote every character in the show to be completely unlikable. I down right hated some of them.
The killer is one of my favorites in recent movie release. I am not really into action movies as they are just far too unrealistic for me. Liked the first John Wick but they should have stopped there. This is a thinking man’s action flick. I have watched the Killer multiple times and more is revealed with each viewing. I understand Nicks review. However, did Nick watch it more than once? I would recommend that. My experience was the first viewing was like watching old school film noir. Loved the Killers continual internal voice dialogue as it sets up who he is and later juxtaposes against his discipline/rules and actions. It’s also quite witty. The movie has one of the best, realistic fight scenes in long time, demonstrating how desperate and ugly it can get. No John Wick exaggerations. I watched this movie a few more times when working out and realized it’s a very interesting human study in how we/ Killer think we have control of our lives. We put all these rules, disciplines, routine into our lives and believe we are safe and in control. In reality, we are simple mitigating, risk assessing, against most common pitfalls but not those things we never see coming. Despite living by his codes and doing quite well for many years, the Killer realizes he was never in control and continually must break his own rules to accomplish his revenge mission, which the mission itself breaks the rules. It’s interesting to see him violate his rules one by one and self-reflecting for first time in a long time. However, he knows there are limitations to his revenge. He eliminated those people who most likely could give him future problems. He did not kill the Rich Man because killing someone at that level likely would result in investigations of the highest priority and after confronting him he knew he would not be a threat, making the decision on the spot to spare him. As he says early in the film, part of getting away with murder is the status of the client and police fatigue i: e case overload. I highly recommend the film.
Great insight, I enjoy your interpretation
I enjoyed this a lot, i kind of read the manhwa it was based off so i had a different mindset going into it but this was really fun and it has me thinking. Better than squid game for me
Also majority of us wouldnt even have access to this if it was in real life. The people that would pay to watch this are most likely rich depraved perverts ans would definitely enjoy the torture. In a sense, most of us would likely be number 3 or 5 or any of the lower floors and cannot imagine ourselves as 8 or 6 which makes this really uncomfy for us. People like 8 and 6 would find it funnt. But i really wouldve lived to see the alternate angle you suggested.
Yeah I think the torture was a bit much, but I dont think it is that...unrealistic. we live in a world where people get missing in droves, dark web, genocides, and many other firms of violence is being perpertuated in different parts of the world. The gnocide currently happening in Gaza, syria, the children of Congo and all that are happening and these are bing green lighted by other human beings. I do wish they leaned into the point you made about it getting boring because yeah at some point the sleep deprivation thing was boring. Although they stated that at that point, she wasnt even doing it for the audiwnce, it was just because she wanted to see others in pain. That wouldve been an interesting twist. I kind of like that it was uncomfortable, because it would also be ironic that ethy would make the suffering of the characters be more "digestable and entertaining" for us. We may as well just be the ones watching from the camera then. None of that was right. No one should be used as entertainment fodder and i kind of liked that they made sure it was uncomfortable for the average watcher
You're getting wrecked by the rabid fans, but i competely agree with this video, and we all know it was awful compared to S1. The writing is just so painfully stupid, the pacing is terrible, the characters are eirther annoying or retreads that are slightly different. Imagine being dumb enough to proclaim that everyone hated it because "they didnt understand it". This isnt fuckin Inception lmao.
People get so mad if you say you didn’t like something they did like 😂
to me just felt like a big waste of time. i had more fun watching the comedic relief of thanos than anythin in the actual story. it was so obvious who the rat was but i went with it for film sake and it never does anything after they capture gihun. You dont see who wins the games. they dont even kill the guy so what is the point? We got our fishing boat buddy who btw the captain is ALSO a rat?? and then the story with the female soldier, which i sorta understood but we got zero closure for that either so why add that? thanks for coming to my ted talk.
this just my opinion chat plz dont flame me
I TOTALLY agree with you on that I wanted to turn off the show so many times when the violence started ramping up. The sleep deprived torture I was just counting down the moments it would all end. I was too far deep into the show to stop but I did take a long break between some episodes. It was really bumming me out.
And I think that was the point. You wanted to stop and you could but you didn’t. In a way us as the viewer is adding the time ..
@lauren7553 YO!! this blew my mind I can see the connection 🤯
@lauren7553 Damn seriously great point lol. And I hate that.
@@itsme7285 ikr 😩it was violent but i couldn’t look away because i just had to see how it would end !
Just finished the season. Im so mad.
Yeah I’m not sure they will ever make a season 2
My one and only problem with season 2 is how incomplete it feels, absolutely nothing is resolved in the season it’s a prelude to a future season. And yes it’s common for shows to have an overarching plot over seasons but in this not any of the threads are resolved which is just deeply unsatisfying. Everything here was just setting up season 3.
It’s a really common trend these days
I remember watching The Wedding Banquet on DVD in 1993. In 2023, the Library of Congress selected the film for preservation in the United States National Film Registry as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant." Now, in 2025, there is a remake with James Shamus (a longtime Ang Lee collaborator) returning as co-writer, this time with a gender-swapping narrative. As an Asian, we tend not to talk about a particular subject so as not to face the real consequences of what could be. If we know something is about to happen, we should not talk about it because it will come true, and the idea behind it is to mask the fear of facing that reality, such as in the film The Farewell (2019) starring Awkwafina. Therefore, the father in The Wedding Banquet doesn’t necessarily do it out of menace but as a coping mechanism. After realizing that his son is gay, he goes to the next person and relates his understanding to them instead. Here is another aspect of Asian culture: we do not speak directly to the affected person whom we love, but only to someone who is close or acts as an intermediary. In this case, Simon is that middle-ground person. In the end, it is a win-win situation. If Wai-Tung found out that Simon was fine later on, he would already know that his father knew he was gay unless Wai-Tung was just too shallow or dense. Many older Asian parents do not say “I love you” out loud but do it through gestures. In this case, Simon receives Wai-Tung’s father’s blessing.
