    I do not understand how pride is an issue related to painters, exactly. Mind you, I am an industrial mechanic by trade, so maybe I am missing the painter's experience (the UA-cam algo sent me here). But I do not quite understand why you seem to make it out to be something that plagues especially painters, and not just everyone, as humans.

    • @prosponderingpaint
      @prosponderingpaint 6 місяців тому

      I appreciate your comment. I can not speak for the UA-cam algorithm, but I'm glad you are here. I agree that this is a human issue. However, being in the painting trade for almost 25 years, that is our area of expertise. For that reason alone, this conversation is directed in that direction. No doubt you could say the same thing about your colleagues. We just want to shine a light on a big problem, and give others a chance to talk about it Thank you for adding to the conversation

  • @TrustedHousePainter
    @TrustedHousePainter 6 місяців тому

    Painters are generally emotional, because they're artists and technicians. This isn't bad, just the way it is. Business owners tend to be more objective. This distinction is the bain of the contracting industry.

    • @prosponderingpaint
      @prosponderingpaint 6 місяців тому

      you are correct. due to the nature of the job, you are putting a piece of yourself in each project. that makes people more invested, hence more emotional I can't say if business owners are more objective or not (I would hope that is the case) however, if someone is asking for help, you can do one of 2 things 1. ignore it. which is fine. you don't have to help everyone 2. try to help. there are many good people out there Sadly, MANY take a 3rd option of ridiculing people who ask. as was mentioned in the video, we feel it's because there are no consequences on social media. so people who would be very nice in real life, turn into a bully when "no one is looking" our goal was to shine a light on it and hopefully have a nice conversation (like we are here) I'm glad you don't see it much. I appreciate your thoughts and am glad you shared them

    You may want to add a 0 to the end of that number. How did you get the job advertise in the local church bulletin? How do I get to the job, get my kids bike and bungee a wagon to it to hold my tools? Won't work in Wisconsin winter time. LOL I did try to open an account at Sherwin Williams and they didn't want much to do with me. I would assume it's cause I'm a women and not going to buy much. So I went to my local #hallmanlindsaypaints and they took great care of me, but I walked out with almost 300 dollars in paint supplies.

    • @prosponderingpaint
      @prosponderingpaint 7 місяців тому

      I appreciate your comment and observations. As I'm sure you saw this, we were just talking about materials. I would say most of the time (speaking in generalities) the 1st couple of jobs are friends/family or friends of friends/family. So something like a church bulletin is probably very accurate for a 1st job. I will also say (speaking for myself) when I started, I borrowed whatever I could (ladder, bedsheets for dropcloths, later I learned that you can't borrow bedsheets for dropcloths because no one wants them back when they are full of paint ;-) ) It is safe to say that most people have a mode of transportation. I personally ran my painting business out of a 1993 Saturn SL2 for my 1st couple of years when I started out as a 17 year old. I did this because that was the only thing I had. When I got bigger jobs, I would borrow a truck from friends or rent a truck from Menards It is interesting that you say Sherwin-Williams seems to not care for you when you are starting out. I grew up in Manitowoc WI (I would be interested in knowing where you are located) they didn't give me the time of day. Hallman Lindsay took me in and treated me very well. Within 2 years, I was in that locations top 10 contractors. I didn't get interesting to Sherwin-Williams until I was working on a subdivision for a builder (in Green Bay) and a Sherwin-Williams rep just happened to stop by and wondered who had all the work in that area. That was the 1st time that they had ever acknowledged my existence. So I know exactly how you feel on that front. I don't think it's because you are a woman. It is something cultural within their organization. It sounds like you have a good spot with Hallman. They are a good company. We have a couple of videos coming out. One I would really like your thoughts on it will be coming out in a week or 2. The title will be " the mental illness that most painters develop" (name might change slightly) we talk about the culture of the industry and how it needs to change. I would love to hear your thoughts on that as well I hope you hang in there. You are obviously a person who cares, and I'm confident you will succeed. Please stay in touch and let me know if we can help, or if you have ideas for other videos

    100 dollars... plus tax (hehe) Great advice given just like all your other videos. I would switch a few things around, still under a 100 though. First job, so no QT of spackle. You would need a gallon of Joint Compound or a 1/2 of spackling. Add Putty Knife. Also buying my first extension pole would be 2-4, and thus saving enough for a drop cloth :)

    Two thoughts. 1. Just because you can start a business for 100$ does not mean you should. You still need some kind of skill and marketing 2. Make sure you can prove that you are a painting contractor before asking for an account they are not going to just give out discounts like free beer

    Safely Heating the paint is good practice, you can achieve lowering the viscosity exponentially without having to thin. I Heat all of my 2k water-based polys between 90 to 100 degrees to successfully spray without having to cut the product. Between 60 and 70 degrees these products come out of the can like pudding.

    • @prosponderingpaint
      @prosponderingpaint 8 місяців тому

      Thanks for the comment. No doubt, certain products and applications might call for a skilled painter to decide what the best starting temperature is for the project. Water based polys sometimes tend to "seize" when cooler. There is definitely a sweet spot for those
