Been going there since the 80s before the garage opened. Sold in the Garage for a few years and left after it started to tank likely 5 years before this. The garage used to be packed in the first 5 - 10 years of its opening. Then the internet took away a lot of business. I know just about everyone in this video! and all the inside secrets lol The older man at 2:06 in the green coat giving away the candy is Bernie Winkler. He is my absolute closest friend and I still see him today we still exchange business and long talks about the past and the olden days of the flea market. He has been at the market since the early 70s and is an old timer originally in the retail business since the 40s, He has been in every level business including owning a record store and being responsible for the discovery of Eddie Gorme which he was friends with her agent who he called and said You have to come to the record store and hear this girl sing The rest was history after he signed her immediately. He has had many many runs in's and stories with many of the old time Celebrities who sang for the first time in his record store Bobby Vinton also one of them. His brother was the personal photographer for Al Jolson and also for Time magazine. He can tell some amazing stories. He is also quite a comedian and sharp as a tac today at 91 years old. The older looking lady in the very short cropped off hair right after Bernie at 2:13 holding horse in black was a real character a bit I guess you can say off and would drive the dealers crazy her famous line - How much is this? which she would ask relentlessly until they either gave up and let het have it very very cheap or took off till she diaapeared to another booth She would do this with just about anything from a pen a picture a bottle to a marble. Spiked hair guy, A real character never know what his mood was going to be so he was not always very approachable and the outfits he wears in this video are NOTHING compared to some others!! And the other dressed guy at 2:56 in the large coral beaded necklaces is a clothes designer and loves making his own clothes and showing them off at the market. He is very creative and favors black clothing and Asian type looking styles. He makes everything he wears himself. And thats just the tip of the IceBerg, Many of the dealers at this market have some pretty fascinating past many are artist way back from the old New York days in the village and friends with artist at the time like Ed Weiner, Sam Kramer, and Robert Michael Mapplethorpe among others of the the famous Modernist moments of the 50s and 60s as well as old time performers and bushiness owners of old time New York. A shame so much of there history should have been collected in a book about the 26th Street Market.

Maybe you remember my father John the roadrunner. We were set up at the outdoor paid market parked on 25th by the light pole for 20 years

+akadba dave Thank you. I know where to go and we meant the same place, but still a schame because of the one dollar Fee. Every other fleamarket is for free, even the Hells Kitchen at 9 Ave at 39th street. I still mis the garage which I visited almost every year. Take care.
