Inside Centralia: A Pennsylvania Ghost Town Consumed by an Eternal Fire
Centralia, Pennsylvania, was once a bustling coal mining town, peaking in the late 1800s with over 2,700 residents, a rich infrastructure of saloons, churches, schools, and businesses. Founded on land originally owned by Robert Morris and later developed by coal entrepreneur Alexander Rae, Centralia’s prosperity was tied to its vast anthracite coal resources. However, the town's fortunes began to decline after World War I and the Great Depression, which reduced coal production and led to a shrinking population. By the 1960s, Centralia was already in a state of slow decline.
In 1962, the town’s fate was sealed when a controlled burn at a landfill near an old strip mine accidentally ignited an underground coal seam. Despite multiple efforts by the local government and fire services, the fire spread unchecked, infiltrating old mine shafts and making its way beneath the town. Over the decades, the fire caused hazardous gases to leak into homes, opened dangerous sinkholes, and made living conditions impossible for most residents. The government began offering relocation buyouts in the early 1980s, and by 1992, Centralia was condemned, with nearly all residents displaced. A few stubborn holdouts fought for years to remain in their homes, reaching a legal agreement in 2013 that allowed them to stay until their deaths.
Today, Centralia is a ghost town, with little more than a few scattered structures, empty streets, and the ever-present smoldering fire below. The underground blaze is expected to burn for centuries, leaving behind a desolate, eerie reminder of the town’s tragic end.

My home 😊 Thanks for the video of our awesome little town!
Hey, what's the name of the song that starts at 4:54? I'm not having any luck finding it.
9:42 - How funny that as you're talking about a dead mall, the sone "So Alive" is playing in the background.
I think the Biden admin killed the malls. They were already not doing great because of online purchases but the COVID lockdown followed by the dismal economy killed it.
I live cheam creese on a hot bagel!!
It reminds me of a dollar store with a mixture of everything. But I've been a few times stayed at the hotel once. Nothing to write home about. But I would definitely go back for the memories. And yes the Ginger Ale. I think it's made some where there.
I have lived in Harrisburg for 35 years. That mall was great to shop In. What a Shame..
This is very misleading. I live about 25 minutes away. The area is not at all dangerous, poor, dirty, or anything like that. It is actually a very nice area, with well kept, recently built housing, stores, food, roads, and schools. I just drove by this exact location today. There is a Rolls-Royce dealership less than 1 mile down the road. And that soccer field you can see in the video is filled with well off, law abiding citizens and their families during the soccer season. Affluent people in the are have stopped going to that mall. They go to either Crabtree Valley Mall or Southpoint Mall, both of which are nicer with more, and better stores and food. Most of the money left this mall, but the area is still nice. The stores inside the mall now cater more to the black and Hispanic communities. And those stores that were outside were not at all popular even at the mall's peak. There is nothing weird or different here. It's just being framed that way with a youtube video.
You don't mention John Wannamaker's. WTF
I live 15 mins from KPPC and I go here all the time. If you go in the back deep behind one of the buildings by the road, there is actually a little abandoned village where I'm assuming doctors on call would stay. There's even an empty swimming pool and everything. Some of the houses look like they've been burned down as well which is weird. Very fascinating. These buildings also used to be a lot more accessible before it got turned into a public park.
they other mall in Harrisburg is the Colonial Park Mall and it definitely has a weird vibe with some stores open and doing fine but a lot of others empty
So much potential at that mall. Been there many times during vacation. Very nostalgic.
I wish I could walk through this mall just one more time every time I pass it. Lots of memories. ❤
If you want to go back and do a proper video, let me know!!
Sad. As a young teenager I had some good times there.
You should explore the power plant there it’s the building with the big smokestack and it fairly easy to get Inside, just where some form of mask
I remember when the government stopped funding these facilities (Reagan administration ?) and the mentally ill were set loose to roam the streets of Baltimore
The major problem is if you go down now, a lot of people haven’t been there for over 20 years. What do you expect will happen if you don’t come back. There are 9 restaurants, 2 juice bars, at the pavilions and about 6 shops open now. Several other shops are opening by November. Come back more frequently and see what’s changed. You can’t come down see it not how it used to be and just give up on your city.
Can u do an updated video. Maybe every 6months until the tea renovations begin
Tea-real
It's a gay hookup spot. I'm surprised you didn't find someone boinking there.
When I was growing up, that big red house at the beginning was my grandparents. Such a fun place to play hide and seek with my sister and cousins!!
Why is there no pro skate video yet at SOB? Seriously fellas, step it up.
Always enjoy passing by South of the Border. It's almost surreal every time.
How much longer do you think the York Galleria Mall in York, Pa will last?
that "guardpost" in kitchen was actually mr whitmyers office he was in charge of kitchen, you didnt go in a block? we had a library in basement where i would get books from main library for us to use in a block lol
we were never allowed in tunnels beneath kitchen, we were told by staff that tunnel was used in past to transport dead to be cremated
forgot to state i was there for 5 years working kitchen and officer dining before becoming guy who went out front to raise and lower flags by entrance building and get trash in visitor parking lot
J block was regular higher level housing when i was there as was d,b,c and e, a block was honor block and we had keys to our cells, h was sex offender theraputic community, f was for mental
I arrived in Gaithersburg MD in 1987. Coming from the Philippines, I was not familiar with Malls, as I came from the province and we did not have Malls at that time, so you can imagine the excitement walking around diffrent stores.
That IS NOT John Wilkes Booth's headstone! It is the foot stone of his sister Asia's grave. John is in the family plot but, as per the federal government's requirement, in an unmarked plot.
"Why did that smell like Cheetos?"😂😂😂
I'm hoping that by some miracle it stops burning. I mean it's just so sad. 200 years... ugh.
Too bad you didn't have an IR thermometer to get a reading at the vent.
Seems as though the munucipal building might be in some kind of use as the American flag is still flying.
The revitalization of Buffalo has come a long way. The Larkin area, downtown, canalside are all examples of this.
I am manifesting with my mind that this video will blow up in views
Great job!!!!
Looks like that place was used for returning war solders that came from combat fields. I think that is why it is so big. Or did America have mass hysteria for a couple generations?
my opinion: very good independent documentary. Way better that most commercial documentary's. Thanks!
I agree, better than the documentary stuff on TV.
Nice job on the video and history. I’ve been visiting Centralia since the 1980s when my summer job took me through there just as buildings were being marked for demolition. Been through dozens of time over the decades and took hundreds of photos. Wish I could post some here.
I always wanted to visit Centralia.....until my wife informed me that on my way to Berwick on 61 that I had in fact already visited, several times. I was so confused.
I always thought that if they had a movie theatre instead of that Dicks Sporting Goods it would draw more people. Not the best location, but I remember that the Twisted Fork and Champs would be pretty busy. I think Covid finally put the nail in the coffin for those restaurants.
I do not understand why people cannot understand that background music is just that in the background to add a little atmosphere. I should never be subjected to background music so loud that I can't hold a conversation. I am not above asking restaurants, stores and other businesses to turn down the music when it is too loud and distracting.
This Kmart will be closing Oct 20, 2024
Capital Blvd coming from downtown all the way to this mall is a sketchy disaster. It’s a strip mall paradise, and it’s a stain on the entire city when a mall like this closes. My guess is apartments will be built in this area.
This location is closing October 20, 2024. After that, there will be only one Kmart left in the continental US.
They are currently in the process of finally knocking the Perrys down.
10:56 that building was the laundry.
I actually kinda feel sad about this mall's demise. The surrounding area, at least on the US side of the border, is VERY rural and remote with a small population. The closing of this mall pretty much eliminated any nearby options for clothes shopping for people around there, except for Walmart and online. Now their only other options are: 1. Cross the border into Canada and deal with passports/border crossing issues. 2. Drive 70+ miles to Watertown and shop there. 3. Drive almost 90 miles to Plattsburgh and shop there.
That food court, with the faux-downtown looking facades, actually looks strikingly similar to the food court at Sangertown Square in New Hartford NY (next to Utica). Wonder if the same company built both of those malls?
