This makes me think at the start he didn't care about being a loser and an unpopular guy(for highschool anyway) as long as he had his best bud Jeremy. But since Jeremy abandoned him he doesn't wanna be seen as some weirdo and loser or stoner, and doesn't wanna embarrass himself.
