Nice review. Can you tell us where on the fuse box you connected to +12volts? Also, most timing light instructions state to use an external battery, not one running the engine. I have not found using the car battery to be an issue, but is it something to be concerned about?
No concern, there is less electrical noise when using a separate battery. Use the connection on the fuse box which is ignition live, and a classic mini this is the connection that has the white colour wire attached to it.
Good to have Chloe there to film the work involved in a full tune up. Not everyday you get an offer of marriage one very happy customer.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
hello and thanks for the video. i have a coil with primary resistance that tests within specs but a secondary resistance that tests a bit high. (secondary range is supposed to be 2.4k-3.5k, coil is testing at 4.37k). is there any problem with running this coil? what impact might it have?
No I think the ones I use are much higher than that.

Who's the guy doing tuning in Taunton?
Watch my fb page in August.
Nice video. Practical and to the point. Regarding the centering of the tailstock it might be worth mentioning that you need to take any twist out of the lathe bed first by using shims under its mounting points. Otherwise your tailstock will not be centred all along the bed length.
I did not realise you had these sessions, will see if I can join next time!
I’ve recently installed an HIF44 carb on my engine and I’m working through the tuning process. I’ve got an innovate wideband to check the mixtures In what order do you normally tune them - spring, needle then oil? I have started with red spring, BDL, LZX1505 damper and 20W oil and it was super lean and boggy I’m now using yellow spring, BCE needle and 20W60 oil and it’s much better but not finished yet I guess I’m concerned that tuning to suit the wrong spring or oil will make it harder to pick the needle
Spring needle then damper and oil.
@@ACDodd is there a general point at which to swap from red to yellow spring? Do you need to observe the piston rising under load or can it be done static?
@@timsminigarageall tuning is always best carried out under load.
@@ACDodd my compression ratio turned out a bit higher than I’d originally planned for. I get occasional pinging at part throttle and I’ve only been able to stop this by reducing the timing (I have a programmable timing curve). Would it be best to remove the vacuum advance and run more mechanical advance to get better low to mid performance under load? At the moment it’s a bit compromised And yes the best option would be to lower the compression ratio but I’m trying to work out the best way to do that

Nothing like getting the curve right. Well done.
The car at 14:40 has a rattle maybe cam follower? Would you be concerned about this and replace or leave?
The reality of most minis is that most owners use second hand engines, the sound does indicate wear, but its associated with a strip down and rebuild, most owners avoid that due to costs. This is only worth fixing if it’s annoying or gets worse.
do recomend a bp5 on a 1275 as well/how could I tell what is best to run. Many thanks
No a bp6 is the one for a 1275 engine, unless highly tuned

Have you rebuilt any HO packs? Can premium cells match the originals? What is something simple to discharge individual cells?
I use a normal charger with a discharging function to run down cells you must do this under supervision so that you don’t over discharge the cells down to 3 volts is low enough. For high output cells internal resistance is key the lower you go the better the performance. Unfortunately good low resistance cells cost money, I have re used salvaged Samsung 20s and 25s cells these make excellent high output cells for standard batteries and of course use the Samsung 50S for the 21700 packs are even better the model p42 items, but all cost money unless you can salvage
@@ACDodd My 12HO have 40t. I read 50s has much less recharge life in it compared to 40t?
@@POLOLOUS3you are correct you don’t get something for nothing.
@@ACDodd have you tried out/tested those case repair kits yet? Any feedback?
@@POLOLOUS3 yes I plan to do a couple of 9ah builds soon, however all the aftermarket kits they are not as good as the originals. For standard duty using good quality salvaged cells they work very well.

Nice informative video. I have battery packs 1.5Ah which work since 2016, discharge charge made by Bülle (PRC). Can I upgrade them when they are dead? Is the battery design uniform for these tools? Thank you.
If they are lithium ion cells you should be able to replace the older lower capacity cells with more modern high capacity versions. I also did just this to a 2010 Bosch 14.4volt drill which was fitted with 1.3ah 18650 cells. I fitted 4 x 2.5ah 18650 from a a scrapped shark vacuum cleaner, and the conversion is ace, very infrequent charging now!
@@ACDodd Thank you. You are legend!
I've machined 1000s of pistons in the 80s and 90s , below the oil ring land is cam ground or diamond turned, all the ring lands I've clocked have been round .
Thanks for that input, it seems some are, and some aren’t when it comes to the A-series engines
Interesting video
I’m wondering two things… can you work this same magic for a bmw 2002 (e10) With a Weber 32/36 and a mechanical distributor? I’m having the same issues. Iv got so far on the fueling. But setting timing properly is beyond me. Or do I need to find a bmw (m10 engined m10b20) expert. Thanks
I tune su carbs only can easily work on any mechanical dizzy.
@@ACDodd great news! Do you travel by South Yorkshire much? Thanks
Ty great video, truly helpful, was wondering about this.
I had a c reg maestro in mid 90s with an a+ series engine with electronic ignition and it was faster than lots of other 1.3 rivals. Im aware of how light it was but after watching your videos it must have had all original ignition components and probably the smaller 998 crank. A flying machine. Interesting videos thank you
Great information, Im having alot of issues with a sherpa running a hif44 it always needs choke to start what ever temperature and will peter out if the idle screw is reduced below 1100rpm. Ive done all the seals, inlet gaskets and air leak checks but still wont let me set a nice base idle. Would you have any ideas?
You need to be able to determine how Rich or lean it’s running.
@ACDodd I've had it on the 4 gas and it doesn't seem to matter at what co percentage you run it at, as soon as you try and reduce the idle stop screw to a sensible level it just Peters out then needs choke enrichment to restart. It has a late style ignition system with an ecu. Knock, ram and temp sensor.

Message for Dave Humphries, happy to demonstrate to you there is more than one way to set up these carbs, if you watch ‘all’ my content, you will see that I do state the limitations, and I am not conning people. I will let others answer here if you reply to this. It is nice to meet someone who used to tune engines at the factory. Your opinion does not match my own experience. Please look at the link below and open the downloads section, there you will find the info I provide upfront to people when I attend shows etc. it clearly states I cannot set the full power fueling with out the use of a load. cmcrivierarun.co.uk/show-information Please look at all the information available before jumping to conclusions. Secondly the when people contact me for a booking this is often asked about and discussed.

Great information Always enjoy seeing what you know and can do Just wish I was near you and was able to afford you to look at mine Your knowledge is amazing Since I became poorly I am these days limited to what I can do, but your videos have inspired me to have a go at servicing and cleaning carbs but definitely not to your standards as I’m no engineer It’s your knowledge that has inspired me to try my hand at cleaning and service twin carbs And I’m getting better at them My kindest Regards Simon
It seems the majority of people are running with the wrong spark gap. What might explain that, at least in part, is that the latest Haynes manual specifies a 0.8mm gap for all sparks in all applications. That's about 32 thou, and I think that's pretty much how they come out of the box.
Most don’t even check it.
I have fitted the champion HT lead caps on my existing spark plugs. What was the reason they caused high resistance on one for the vehicles in the video? Just wondering if I should now ditch the ones I have and just get a set of powersparks and leave as is. Thanks
The ones in the video were adding 10,000ohms of resistance into the circuit.
I’m always happy to hear you impart more knowledge on us thank you greatly AC
Mr.Dodd you have really opened my eyes intact I now realise that I was blindfolded walking around in the dark. I thought that I could tune an engine until I watched your videos and how wrong could I of been I have followed your advice on every little detail and wow what a difference I'm still possibly not spot on but in the ball park thanks to you , your videos are educational and inspirational please please keep making them
Thanks for the feedback!
Hi, I apologize for the off-topic question, but I'm curious about how long the valve seat cutters you use last before they need to be replaced. I subscribed to your channel after watching that particular video. Thank you!
They last about 20 heads
@@ACDodd Just to clarify, 20 heads which are 4 cylinder and 2 valve heads?
@@ACDodd Thanks!
What sort of AFR are we talking to see bore wash to this extent? I’m assuming it’s not just a little bit rich but right down into single figure AFR? (Ie at least 50 percent more fuel than there should be not just ten percent for example)
Pretty much. From a well known 4G63 engine builder - you need to be running less than 10:1 for bore wash to be a factor. However! If it's a new hone and rings, running very rich will glaze it within minutes. A profilometer will show this.
That’s likely well into the 10’s but the point is any excess fuel is too much for running in. The point is what happens if you set the idle screw to make the engine drive nicely, it ends up being far too rich at idle and part throttle speeds. Bore wash quickly follows.
Certainly a good reason to have an AFR gauge handy when running in.
Good stuff I'm picking my engine up from the machine shop tomorrow, you've given me plenty of food for thought!
What's the difference between bore washing and bore glazing please?
Same, although the term bore washing leads to glazing, the term bore wash simply describes how this glazing has happened.
Interesting. For 'standard' use though, wouldn't a set of rings and a re-hone return a serviceable engine?
No, how can it, if the bore is honed to clean it up it’s too big for the original piston that runs in it.
@@ACDodd Well.. I guess the question is 'when can you simply change the rings'? I get that that may not lead to the absolute maximum performance, but from a pragmatic point of view, what's the tolerance?
@@gsdavies100 if your piston to bore clearance is less that 0.0035” and the ring lands had less than 0.004” side groove it will work, but don’t expect top power.
Brilliant to turn the airbox cover upside down to increase airflow. Is the hole at the back of the cover really necessary when there is the gap along the entire perimeter. If so, would it help to have second hole in the front?
It would be better to not have a cover at all in terms of airflow
@@ACDodd Duly noted, thank you.
thats has to be the best video in setting up a clutch, , Question : if you machine your old standard flywheel and plate does that make less pressure on the cover plate, ?
Not sure I understand your question?
As said I'm sat at side of the pool, not today im at side of the sea in Corfu & watched your latest video.. top notch!.. Once upon a time I may have used a rolling road but the more I see your videos, takes 1 man with correct tools to give a better performance than a rolling road .. when I get my mini complete I know whom on I will be calling to give me miles for smiles..👏
great video on balancing, , what is your thoughts on lightweight fly wheels, , eg: 1275 A series ,? i saw a video on Balancing a flywheel and cover plate and crank and front pully as one unit, what's your thoughts
Yes dynamic balancing the while assembly is the correct way to do it. However those who simply wish to fit a flywheel or a new clutch to an existing engine this is more difficult, hence using this method of balancing for just the flywheel and clutch is ideal.
Hello, really liked the video you made with Twin Cam. Very happy to see you make your own very informative videos 👍
Ah Ha a twin cam viewer, welcome, and I hope you find this channel useful
Hi AC please could you do a video about lean and bore wash and rich differences cheers
Watch out for a new series called ACDodd inspex……. The first episode features a bore washed block
Well done, great tune up. Nice area Christchurch across to Southampton
Hi Mr Dodd, great stuff as always. I love your tuning videos, and think I understand the approach: review the emissions at different profiles on the rev range, and modify the needle appropriately, after checking the ignition system is up to the mark. Do you tune twin carb installations (2 x H4s) and if so how do I contact you to arrange it? I’m in Scotland, but I’d drive down to get the benefit of your expertise… Cheers Will
Yes I do tune twin carbs, but only if new, or recently properly rebuilt, and only with either a rolling road, or a wideband gauge installed in the vehicle. I am planning on coming up to Scotland in October for a group weekend tuning.
Any chance you do online training courses? If not, would you consider doing that?
