I fell in love with this model from when it was launched in 2014 - The Mercedes GLA is a stunning, sporty-looking SUV, which offers greater space and practicality than the A-Class hatch. This is one of the higher spec models with a desirable automatic transmission, and yet it combines all the quality and comfort you expect from a Merc along with £20 a year road tax, and up to 60 mpg combined fuel economy.
Power comes from Mercedes renowned 2.2 litre CDI diesel engine, producing 134bhp via a smooth 7 speed automatic transmission with column shift and steering wheel mounted paddles for a more engaging, sporty drive should the mood take you.. With excellent grip, you are always able to get the power down when needed, and that power delivery is reassuringly instantaneous, with a surge of torque that is relentless all the way to the red line. Our car is fitted with Mercedes superb cruise control, which is the best in the business. The car is also fitted with a speed limiter function which is a license saver is built up areas and average speed checks. Thanks to its AMG-LINE suspension and alloy wheels the GLA200 handles as good as it looks. Turn-in is instant and the grip is fantastic. It's an entertaining drive which easily lives up to the pedigree of this fantastic marque.
Step inside the GLA, and you are greeted by a well-finished interior which looks very sporty and welcoming. The stitched leather seats are sporty and very supportive with their deep bolsters. They are generously proportioned though, and provide superb comfort on long journeys. I love mix of materials in this car, with plenty of expensive looking aluminium trim, and that huge glass roof which fills the interior with light. The centre console has a large screen display which houses the cars multimedia stereo system, and onboard computer as well as a full colour navigation system and reversing camera. In addition to the camera, this the Premium Plus pack fitted to this car includes parking sensors on both the front and rear of the car. This makes it very easy to part and maneuver. The chunky, leather-bound steering wheel feels and looks sporty, as does the leather and aluminum gear-shifter. While the AMG-line models of this car, have been designed to appeal to the more youthful market, it still has that high-quality Mercedes-Benz feel to remind you this is a premium product. Rear seat passengers are also well catered for and there are isofix child seat anchorage points on the outer rear seats for added safety. The boot space is a very useful 481 litre - around 180 litres more than you get on an A-Class.
