di. Lila 2/117 False devotees, lacking the conclusion of transcendental knowledge, think that artificially shedding tears will deliver them. Similarly, other false devotees think that studying books of the previous ācāryas is unadvisable, like studying dry empiric philosophies. But Śrīla Jīva Gosvāmī, following the previous ācāryas, has inculcated the conclusions of the scriptures in the six theses called the Ṣaṭ-sandarbhas. False devotees who have very little knowledge of such conclusions fail to achieve pure devotion for want of zeal in accepting the favorable directions for devotional service given by self-realized devotees. Such false devotees are like impersonalists, who also consider devotional service no better than ordinary fruitive actions. Śrīla Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura specifically deals with the original and pure sex psychology (ādi-rasa), devoid of all mundane inebriety. The whole material creation is moving under the principle of sex life. In modern civilization, sex life is the focal point for all activities. Wherever one turns his face, he sees sex life predominant. Therefore, sex life is not unreal. Its reality is experienced in the spiritual world. The material sex life is but a perverted reflection of the original fact. The original fact is in the Absolute Truth, and thus the Absolute Truth cannot be impersonal. It is not possible to be impersonal and contain pure sex life. Consequently, the impersonalist philosophers have given indirect impetus to the abominable mundane sex life because they have overstressed the impersonality of the ultimate truth. Consequently, man without information of the actual spiritual form of sex has accepted perverted material sex life as the all in all. There is a distinction between sex life in the diseased material condition and spiritual sex life. * CC Ādi 4.42: Four kinds of devotees are the receptacles of the four kinds of mellows in love of God, namely servitude, friendship, parental affection and conjugal love. * CC Ādi 4.43: Each kind of devotee feels that his sentiment is the most excellent, and thus in that mood he tastes great happiness with Lord Kṛṣṇa. * CC Ādi 4.44: But if we compare the sentiments in an impartial mood, we find that the conjugal sentiment is superior to all others in sweetness. * CC Ādi 4.45: "Increasing love is experienced in various tastes, one above another. But that love which has the highest taste in the gradual succession of desire manifests itself in the form of conjugal love." * CC Ādi 4.46: Therefore I call it madhura-rasa. It has two further divisions, namely wedded and unwedded love. * CC Ādi 4.47: There is a great increase of mellow in the unwedded conjugal mood. Such love is found nowhere but in Vraja. * CC Ādi 4.48: This mood is unbounded in the damsels of Vraja, but among them it finds its perfection in Śrī Rādhā. * CC Ādi 4.49: Her pure, mature love surpasses that of all others. Her love is the cause of Lord Kṛṣṇa's tasting the sweetness of the conjugal relationship. * CC Ādi 4.50: Therefore Lord Gaurāṅga, who is Śrī Hari Himself, accepted the sentiments of Rādhā and thus fulfilled His own desires. * CC Madhya 19.115: Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu taught Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī the ultimate limit of the truth about Lord Kṛṣṇa, the truth about devotional service and the truth about transcendental mellows, culminating in conjugal love between Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa. Finally He told Rūpa Gosvāmī about the ultimate conclusions of Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam. * CC Madhya 8.83: "It is true that whatever relationship a particular devotee has with the Lord is the best for him; still, when we study all the different methods from a neutral position, we can understand that there are higher and lower degrees of love. * CC Madhya 8.84: "'Increasing love is experienced in various tastes, one above another. But that love which has the highest taste in the gradual succession of desires manifests itself in the form of conjugal love.' * CC Madhya 8.85: "There is a gradual order of improvement in transcendental mellows from the initial ones to the later ones. In each subsequent mellow the qualities of the previous mellows are manifested, counting from two, then three, and up to the point of five complete qualities. * CC Madhya 8.86: "As the qualities increase, so the taste also increases in each and every mellow. Therefore the qualities found in śānta-rasa, dāsya-rasa, sakhya-rasa and vātsalya-rasa are all manifested in conjugal love [mādhurya-rasa]. * CC Madhya 8.87: "The qualities in the material elements - sky, air, fire, water and earth - increase one after another by a gradual process of one, two and three, and at the last stage, in the element earth, all five qualities are completely visible. * CC Madhya 8.88: "Complete attainment of the lotus feet of Lord Kṛṣṇa is made possible by love of Godhead, specifically mādhurya-rasa, or conjugal love. Lord Kṛṣṇa is indeed captivated by this standard of love. This is stated in Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam. * CC Madhya 8.89: "Lord Kṛṣṇa told the gopīs, 'The means of attaining My favor is loving service unto Me, and fortunately you are all thus engaged. Those living beings who render service unto Me are eligible to be transferred to the spiritual world and attain eternal life with knowledge and bliss.'

muktāś cāsya tayā śaktyā sac-cid-ānanda-dehitām prāpitās te bhajante taṁ tādṛśaiḥ karaṇair harim muktāḥ - being liberated; ca - also; asya - His; tayā śaktyā - by that potency; sat-cit-ānanda-dehitām - a body of eternity, cognizance, and felicity; prāpitāḥ - having attained; te - they; bhajante - worship; tam - Him; tādṛśaiḥ - with similar; karaṇaiḥ - senses; harim - Śrī Hari. By the influence of the Lord’s potency, all these liberated persons obtain bodies comprised of eternity, knowledge, and bliss. With these transcendental bodies and senses, they worship Śrī Hari with hearing, chanting, and other processes of bhakti. Dig-darśinī-ṭīkā Śrī Gopa-kumāra might raise the following doubt, “It is true that perfected and liberated souls worship Bhagavān. But without bodies and senses, how can they practice bhakti by the processes of hearing, chanting, praying, performing Deity worship, and so on? Those who are fixed in the conception of impersonal Brahman and who are jīvan-mukta (liberated in this life) still possess bodies, so it is possible for them to undertake devotional practice. However, perfected beings who attain liberation merge into Brahman and lose their bodies, senses, and so on. How can they worship the Lord?” Addressing the question, the bhakti-śāstras speak this verse, saying, “O virtuous soul! Do not entertain such a doubt. Although all liberated beings (following the philosophy expressed previously) merge into Brahman, still they continue to exist as different individuals. Therefore, it is stated in Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam (6.14.5): muktānām api siddhānāṁ nārāyaṇa-parāyaṇaḥ sudurlabhaḥ praśāntātmā koṭiṣv api mahā-mune O great sage, one may search among millions of perfected and liberated souls and rarely find one who is devoted to Lord Nārāyaṇa. Such a devotee is completely peaceful.” “In this verse, the word siddhānāṁ, meaning ‘perfected beings,’ indicates that perfected beings also worship Bhagavān. Moreover, the phrase ‘among perfected liberated souls’ indicates that, even after merging in Brahman, they exist as separate individuals. This has been proven in many places. “Having been given, by the Lord’s spiritual potency, bodies made of eternity, knowledge, and bliss, or sac-cid-ānanda, even liberated souls worship the supremely attractive qualities and glories of Bhagavān Śrī Hari with senses suitable for transcendental bodies. The Lord cannot be served with body and senses that are material. The truth is, only liberated personalities by means of spiritual bodies and senses can perform services to the Lord, such as hearing and chanting. _________________ Mayavadis fall down ye ’nye ’ravindākṣa vimukta-māninas tvayy asta-bhāvād aviśuddha-buddhayaḥ āruhya kṛcchreṇa paraṁ padaṁ tataḥ patanty adho ’nādṛta-yuṣmad-aṅghrayaḥ Someone may say that aside from devotees, who always seek shelter at the Lord’s lotus feet, there are those who are not devotees but who have accepted different processes for attaining salvation. What happens to them? In answer to this question, Lord Brahmā and the other demigods said:] O lotus-eyed Lord, although nondevotees who accept severe austerities and penances to achieve the highest position may think themselves liberated, their intelligence is impure. They fall down from their position of imagined superiority because they have no regard for Your lotus feet. Purport Aside from devotees, there are many others, nondevotees, known as karmīs, jñānīs or yogīs, philanthropists, altruists, politicians, impersonalists and voidists. There are many varieties of nondevotees who have their respective ways of liberation, but simply because they do not know the shelter of the Lord’s lotus feet, although they falsely think that they have been liberated and elevated to the highest position, they fall down. As clearly stated by the Lord _____ Self Interest in higher forms of devotion 2) Sarvātma-gilanī mukti-vyāghryā kathā: Talk of liberation is a tigress that devours the soul. The word mukti here refers to brahma-nirvāṇa, which is also known as sāyujya-mukti, or merging into the Lord’s bodily effulgence. Sāyujya-mukti very easily and thoroughly consumes the individual spiritual existence of the soul, or ātma-sattā. Although spiritual existence is admitted in the conception of mukti, the idea that the individual ātmā becomes the all-encompassing supreme Brahman is misleading and phantasmagoric like a flower in the sky. In reality it is the possessor of all potencies, Śrī Bhagavān, who is the one and only Supreme Absolute Truth. The Supreme Lord has one eternal and supreme divine potency, or para-śakti. This para-śakti serves the Lord in various capacities. As the internal potency, Yogamāyā, she manifests the transcendental pastimes of Bhagavān. As the external potency, Mahāmāyā, she produces both the unlimited material universes and the gross and subtle material bodies of the conditioned living entities. As the marginal potency, she manifests the innumerable, infinitesimal living entities. Those who are antagonistic to the eternal names, forms, qualities and pastimes of Bhagavān imagine a state of emancipation from the reactions of their fruitive activities known as brahma-laya, or dissolution into Brahman, which brings about annihilation of the individual self. They derive some sort of pleasure by discussing such so-called liberation. But the pleasure of that liberation is exactly like that of a prisoner who commits suicide in order to obtain everlasting relief from material suffering. One should carefully abandon all discussion of the methods of worship and procedures for the attainment of such liberation, as well as the association of persons who are intent upon it. Just as a man-eating tigress consumes a man’s body, the tigress of liberation devours the individual existence of the soul. Therefore devotees of the Lord consider impersonal liberation as equivalent to self-annihilation. Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī’s conclusions on this subject are stated in Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu (1.2.22, 25) as follows: bhukti-mukti-spṛhā yāvat piśācī hṛdi vartate tāvad bhakti-sukhasyātra katham abhyudayo bhavet śrī-kṛṣṇa-caraṇāmbhoja- sevā-nirvṛta-cetasām eṣāṁ mokṣāya bhaktānāṁ na kadācit spṛhā bhavet As long as the two witches of the desires for material enjoyment and impersonal liberation remain within the heart of the sādhaka, how can the happiness of unalloyed devotion be awakened there? In other words, pure bhakti can never arise in such an impure heart. Devotees whose minds are immersed in the happiness of service to the lotus feet of Vrajendra-nandana Śrī Kṛṣṇa do not have even a scent of desire for liberation. (3) Vyoma-nayanī lakṣmīpati-rati: Love for Lakṣmīpati Nārāyaṇa leads to Vaikuṇṭha The word vyoma or paravyoma here refers to Vaikuṇṭha-dhāma. It is the abode of Lakṣmīpati Śrī Nārāyaṇa, who is characterised by supreme opulence and majesty. By attaining perfection in sādhana-bhakti directed towards Śrīman Nārāyaṇa, one can get four kinds of liberation in Vaikuṇṭha-dhāma: sārūpya (obtaining the same features and form as the Lord), sāmīpya (living in the Lord’s association), sālokya (living on the same planet as the Lord) and sārṣṭi (having the same opulences as the Lord). Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī’s conclusions on this subject are stated in Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu (1.2.55-59) as follows: atra tyājyatayaivoktā muktiḥ pañca-vidhāpi cet sālokyādis tathāpy atra bhaktyā nāti-virudhyate sukhaiśvaryottarā seyaṁ prema-sevottarety api sālokyādir-dvidhā tatra nādyā sevājuṣāṁ matā kintu premaika-mādhurya- juṣa ekāntino harau naivāṅgīkurvate jātu muktiṁ pañca-vidhām api tatrāpy ekāntināṁ śreṣṭhā govinda-hṛta-mānasāḥ yeṣāṁ śrīśa-prasādo ’pi mano hartuṁ na śaknuyāt siddhāntatas tv abhede ’pi śrīśa-kṛṣṇa-svarūpayoḥ rasenotkṛṣyate kṛṣṇa- rūpam eṣā rasa-sthitiḥ Though all five forms of liberation listed here are to be disregarded by a pure devotee, the first four - sārūpya, sāmīpya, sālokya and sārṣṭi - are not altogether incompatible with bhakti. These four forms of liberation are of two kinds: (1) sukhaiśvaryottarā - liberation in which the individual desires his personal pleasure from the grandeur and wealth of Vaikuṇṭha; and (2) prema-sevottarā - liberation in which the dominant desire is to serve the Lord for His pleasure. The first of these, sukhaiśvaryottara-mukti, is not accepted by devotees who are attached to the loving service of the Lord, because it is tainted with the desire for self-pleasure and enjoyment of the Lord’s opulence. The second, prema-sevottara-mukti, is accepted by some devotees, but even in this there remains a trace of indirect desire for personal enjoyment. Consequently, devotees who are fervently attached to the service of the Lord consider even prema-sevottara-mukti to be opposed to bhakti (which is characterised by unalloyed loving service). Therefore exclusive devotees, who drink deeply the mellow sweetness of prema-bhakti for Lord Hari and whose only interest is to give pleasure to the Lord, certainly do not accept any of the five forms of liberation, even though they may be offered by the Lord Himself.

The siddha-praṇai process is followed by a class of men who are not very authorized and who have manufactured their own way of devotional service. They imagine that they have become associates of the Lord simply by thinking of themselves like that. This external behavior is not at all according to the regulative principles. The so-called siddha-praṇai process is followed by the prakṛta-sahajiyā, a pseudo-sect of so-called Vaiṣṇavas. It appears that even such a great personality as Kṛṣṇadāsa Kavirāja Gosvāmī met with some envious obstacles; what, then, to speak of us, who are only insignificant creatures in this universe.
